An “RF gun” in SAP is an informal name for a handheld mobile device or terminal that workers use to carry out warehouse tasks, often by scanning barcodes. It is not a single SAP product or a specific scanner model. SAP’s RF framework connects warehouse workflows to different device types and input methods; the right setup depends on the SAP product, release, deployment, and work the device must support.
What SAP RF means
SAP describes the RF framework in Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) as separating warehouse business logic from how that work is presented on a physical device. It can adapt presentation to device capabilities and user preferences, accept user input, invoke the relevant services, and support personalized menus and screens. See SAP’s Radio Frequency Framework documentation.

That distinction matters when planning a warehouse: the “RF gun” is the worker’s interface, while SAP provides the process logic behind it. A handheld scanner, mobile terminal, or another supported device may be part of the solution, but the label alone does not establish that a device will work with a particular SAP installation.

- Picking and putaway
- Loading and unloading
- Deconsolidation and packing
- Physical inventory and replenishment
In SAP S/4HANA Warehouse Management documentation, scanned barcode data is described as being posted synchronously in the S/4HANA system. That documentation also covers activities such as putaway, stock transfer, and stock picking. Treat that statement as specific to the documented S/4HANA context, not a guarantee about every SAP product, integration, or customized process. See SAP S/4HANA Radio Frequency documentation.

| Access pattern | How it works | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| GUI-connected device | Connects to SAP like another client-dependent PC; may use a touch screen or keyboard. | Confirm the client and device presentation fit the target process and hardware. |
| Character-based terminal through SAPConsole | SAP Learning describes SAPConsole as operating on a Windows platform and interacting with RF terminals. | Verify the required SAPConsole environment and terminal setup for the intended system. |
| Browser-based device | Uses ITSmobile or SAP GUI for HTML in the documented contexts. | SAP Learning says SAP GUI for HTML is used for mobile devices in Warehouse Management in S/4HANA Cloud public edition, and can also be used for EWM in private edition or on-premise. Confirm applicability for the target release and setup. |
SAP best-practice procedures for both inbound and outbound processes instruct users to complete the mobile RF device setup for the relevant scope before carrying out the process variant. See the inbound and outbound process documentation.

Barcode scanning, screens, and navigation
Barcode support depends on the SAP context
SAP EWM 7.0 EHP4 RF documentation describes barcode identification and verification, names EAN 128, and notes that other types can be supported. More recent SAP Learning content names GS1-128 and says other barcode types can be supported when customized in Mobile Data Entry. These are different documentation contexts and terminology; verify the target product, release, configuration, barcode labels, and scanner capabilities rather than assuming support from the phrase “RF gun.”

- Widely Compatible: Bluetooth Barcode Scanner for iPhone iPad Android Tablet PC, Support HID / SPP / BLE mode via bluetooth, Work with Windows XP/7/8/10, Mac OS, Windows Mobile, Android OS, iOS, Linux.
- Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
- Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
- 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
Screen and menu presentation can be tailored
The RF Screen Manager customizes RF screen appearance, while the RF Menu Manager supports custom menus and menu hierarchies. SAP Learning also describes display profiles and screen templates for device- and user-specific adjustments. The 8×40 standard-screen detail appears in the cited EWM 7.0 EHP4 documentation; it should not be treated as a universal limit for current devices.
Workers can enter data in more than one way
SAP Learning describes navigation by selecting a menu item, entering its number, or using virtual navigation. Workers may scan or type into open fields, use function keys or shortcut fields to invoke actions, and enter exception codes when the process calls for them. The best input arrangement depends on the actual task and device interface.

How to estimate device needs and choose hardware
Questions about an implementation often include how many scanners, printers, or tablets a plant needs. SAP’s RF framework explains the software and workflow side, but it does not provide a universal device count or a model-by-model compatibility list. Estimate needs from the plant’s actual processes and operating conditions rather than from an assumed number per warehouse.
Recommended Free Tools
- Define the scope. Identify the SAP product, release, deployment, warehouse processes, and user groups that will use mobile devices.
- Choose the access approach. Determine whether the intended setup uses a GUI-connected device, SAPConsole terminal, or browser-based access such as ITSmobile or SAP GUI for HTML where applicable.
- Map the work. Identify where workers scan, type, navigate menus, use function keys, or enter exception codes, and which activities must be supported.
- Specify barcode requirements. List the symbologies on labels and confirm both SAP configuration and scanner support for them in the target process.
- Assess the environment and operations. Evaluate screen and keypad needs, ergonomics, connectivity, battery requirements, durability, accessories, and repair support for the work location.
- Validate the setup before rollout. Follow the applicable SAP mobile RF setup instructions and test the actual workflow, device interface, and labels in the target environment.
These checks establish requirements; they do not prove that a particular hardware model is compatible. The available SAP material does not establish current device prices, individual model certifications, or a single best configuration.
