Windows 11 does not have one switch that restores every part of the Windows 10 audio popup. Instead, it separates audio controls among Quick Settings, the Settings-based Volume Mixer, and the older sndvol.exe mixer. A third-party utility such as EarTrumpet can provide a more convenient tray popup.
Use the built-in controls first, try sndvol.exe -m if you want the compact classic mixer, and install EarTrumpet only if you need a persistent, richer per-app interface. Menu names and layout can vary by Windows 11 release, language, hardware, drivers, and installed updates.

Identify which audio popup you want
“Audio popup” is not an official Windows 11 feature name. It can mean several different interfaces:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Quick Settings flyout
Click the speaker, network, or battery area on the taskbar, or press Win + A. The flyout provides the master volume slider, mute control, and an arrow for selecting speakers, headphones, HDMI, Bluetooth, or another available output. Microsoft documents this output selector at its Windows audio guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Volume control provides convenient level adjustment from headphones
- 39" cord
- Connects to any 3.5mm plug
- Includes pocket/belt clip for convenient positioning
- Can be used with any portable music device
Windows 11 Volume Mixer
This Settings page controls individual applications and can assign an output device separately for each app:
Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer
It is the supported replacement for most per-app volume and routing tasks.
Classic mixer
The compact legacy window, associated with sndvol.exe, may still be available. It is not the same visual interface as the Windows 10 taskbar flyout.
Media controls
Some people mean play, pause, previous, and next buttons that appeared in older media overlays. Opening the classic mixer does not guarantee that those transport controls or a hardware-key volume overlay will return.

- [Stepless Volume Control] – Cubilux 3.5mm Volume Control Knob allows you to fine-tune the audio (support both stereo or mono sound) volume of your speaker and earphones to your desired level, giving you complete control over your listening experience.
- [Crystal Clean Sound] – The volume controller ensures lossless transmission of the audio signal, maintaining the original music quality without any static.
- [Support Mute Function] – The volume attenuator allows you to mute the sound by turning the knob to the minimum.
- [NOT for Amplifying Sound / NOT for Control Microphone Volume] – This volume control does NOT amplify sound, using this cable will NOT boost the volume. This volume control allows the microphone signal to pass through, but it is for adjusting the volume of the audio output signal ONLY, NOT for adjusting MIC volume.
- [Compact & Durable] – The volume control is easy to carry with the portable design; The Aluminum alloy shell of the controller offers better interference isolation and durability.
Use Windows 11’s built-in controls
Open Quick Settings and change the output
- Click the speaker, network, or battery area on the taskbar, or press
Win + A. - Move the volume slider or mute and unmute the system.
- Select the output-device arrow.
- Choose the intended speakers, headset, monitor, HDMI device, or Bluetooth output.
The exact arrangement depends on your Windows 11 build and hardware, but master volume and output selection are built-in functions.
Open the per-app mixer
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon.
- Select Open Volume mixer.
- Adjust the master volume and the sliders under Apps.
- For a silent application, inspect its Output device as well as its volume.
You can reach the same page through Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Microsoft describes per-app volume and output assignment in this support article.
Make a missing application appear
- Launch the application.
- Start playing audio in it.
- Open
Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. - Check its volume, mute state, and assigned output device.
- Use Reset if available, then relaunch the app.
Apps commonly appear only after creating an active audio session. Resetting restores Windows’ recommended defaults and can remove intentional per-app routing.
Open the classic mixer with sndvol.exe
A Microsoft Q&A moderator documents this as a practical compatibility workaround, not as a guaranteed, permanently supported restoration method: Microsoft Q&A instructions.

Run the command
- Press
Win + R. - Enter
sndvol.exe -m. - Press Enter.
If the argument does not work on your build, try sndvol.exe by itself.
Create a desktop shortcut
- Right-click an empty desktop area and choose New > Shortcut.
- Enter
sndvol.exe -m. - Select Next, name it Classic Volume Mixer, and choose Finish.
If the wizard cannot resolve the command, use C:WindowsSystem32SndVol.exe -m. Windows may change or remove this executable in a future release.
Know the limits
- The window may not appear in the original lower-right flyout position.
- It does not recreate the exact Windows 10 appearance or taskbar integration.
- Media play/pause/skip buttons are not guaranteed.
- Keyboard and hardware-key behavior can differ.
- Only active audio sessions may be listed.
Use EarTrumpet for a richer tray mixer
EarTrumpet is a third-party utility distributed through the Microsoft Store. It groups audio sessions by output device and offers a separate mixer window. Download it from the official Microsoft Store listing, not from an advertisement or software mirror.

EarTrumpet is not a Microsoft-developed system component, even though it is distributed through Microsoft Store; Microsoft Q&A identifies it as a third-party app. It may add another tray icon, need background permission, require reconfiguration after updates, and duplicate controls already present in Windows.

Restoring a mixer interface does not repair a disabled device, wrong route, stopped service, or broken driver. Work through these checks in order.
Verify the selected output
- Open Quick Settings.
- Select the output-device arrow.
- Choose the intended device and test again.
Check especially when speakers, a monitor, HDMI, and Bluetooth devices are connected. Bluetooth headsets can expose separate stereo and hands-free profiles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnable the playback device
- Open
Start > Settings > System > Sound. - Under Advanced, select More sound settings.
- Open Playback or Recording.
- Select the device and choose Properties.
- Set Device usage to Use this device (enable).
These device steps are listed in Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guidance.
Best Value
- This 3.5mm audio volume control knob is connected by the 3.5mm plug(green) and then the volume is controlled by the controller, and then output by the 3.5mm plug(black) to complete the wire control of the audio volume.
- The internal alloy of the speaker remote volume controller is made of volume control devices, durable, wear-resistant, small damping coefficient, and most importantly, anti-interference, thereby reducing the loss of external radiation to the sound source.
- Simple and stylish appearance, the top of the special light transition process, scratch resistance, as bright as baking paint, smooth to just a finger can be rotated, more comfortable to the touch.
- Plug and play, no drive required. Extra-large anti-slip EV pad at the bottom, it will not slip on the table.
- 3.5mm gold-plated connector, can be applied to most brands of speakers (except for a small number of speakers using 7-pin or 9-pin pin terminal interface), computers, cell phones, tablets, MP3/4 can be used.
Restart Windows audio services
- Open
services.mscfrom Start search. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Restart Windows Audio Endpoint Builder the same way.
- Test the application again.
Update or roll back the driver
Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, update the audio device driver, or use Roll Back Driver if the failure began immediately after an update. Microsoft’s driver guidance is in the Windows audio support page.
Run the automated troubleshooter
For a genuine sound failure, use the audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It diagnoses audio problems; it does not restore an old visual design. See Microsoft’s current instructions.
Choose the least invasive option
| Goal | Best method | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quick master-volume changes | Quick Settings | Not the old Windows 10 interface |
| Per-app volume and routing | Windows 11 Volume Mixer | Requires Settings or its taskbar shortcut |
| Compact legacy window | sndvol.exe -m |
Availability and appearance can vary |
| Persistent, richer tray controls | EarTrumpet | Third-party background utility |
| Silent or missing audio | Routing, services, device, driver, and Get Help checks | Does not restore old artwork |
Common failure modes
- No app in the mixer: start playback so it creates an audio session.
- App slider is present but silent: check its individual output device; it may be routed to HDMI, Bluetooth, or a disconnected device.
sndvol.exe -mdoes nothing: trysndvol.exe, then use Volume Mixer or EarTrumpet.- Popup opens in an unexpected location: a shortcut cannot recreate the original flyout integration.
- Audio failed after an update: check whether driver rollback is available.
- Bluetooth headset is silent: verify the selected Bluetooth profile and output.
A registry tweak should not be the main recommendation: unverified edits can stop working after updates and create recovery risk. Downgrading to Windows 10 solely for its popup is also a poor fallback; Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, as noted in its support documentation.
Bottom line
Use Windows 11’s Volume Mixer for supported per-app control. Use sndvol.exe -m when you want a classic compact mixer without installing software, understanding that it is a compatibility shortcut rather than an exact Windows 10 restoration. Choose EarTrumpet when a persistent tray mixer and easier per-app routing matter more than keeping every control Microsoft-built.
