Review: Thousand Hells Feels More Random Than Six Ages—but in a Different Way

Thousand Hells can feel more volatile than Six Ages, but both games vary between playthroughs. The key difference is whether uncertainty hits in short dice-driven encounters or unfolds across a long clan story.

Thousand Hells: The Underworld Heists feels more volatile than Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind because its uncertainty is concentrated in short, dice-resolved party encounters and the narrative pieces assembled around them. Six Ages also varies between playthroughs, but its uncertainty plays out across a longer clan story shaped by simulation and accumulated decisions. That is a comparison of design and player experience, not a measured claim that one game contains more randomness.

What “more random” means in this comparison

Neither game is fixed from one playthrough to the next. A Sharp has described Thousand Hells as a story generator built from randomized pieces; the designer, David Dunham, told PC Gamer, “We sometimes call it a kaleidoscopic game, because lots of pieces come together and they’re randomized.” A Sharp’s Six Ages announcement also says procedural generation makes each playthrough different, while its Steam listing describes scene outcomes as driven by deep simulation systems.

The useful distinction is where that variation lands. Thousand Hells puts it close to the player: which traits the party can bring to an encounter, which narrative situation appears, and how a dice check resolves. Six Ages distributes uncertainty through a clan’s events and the consequences of decisions over a multi-generational story. So “more random” is a fair shorthand for how Thousand Hells can feel, but not a statistical verdict: the available sources provide no common measure or controlled head-to-head comparison.

How the uncertainty works in each game

Comparison Thousand Hells: The Underworld Heists Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind
Where variation appears Randomized narrative assembly, changing encounter situations and the party traits available for trials. A Sharp/Kitfox Games’ 2026 listing describes dynamic encounters and multiple paths through them. Procedurally varied scenes and simulation-driven clan events. A Sharp’s announcement says playthroughs differ; the Steam listing describes deep simulation systems.
Player’s main lever Choose a four-hero party and bring traits that fit a challenge. A better match improves the roll, according to PC Gamer’s September 2026 review. Make decisions for a clan, manage resources and live with longer-term consequences, as described in the official listing.
How outcomes feel Compact trials can make success or failure feel immediate; PC Gamer’s reviewer found some losses brutal when the available traits seemed poorly timed. Events are part of a continuing clan narrative, with consequences carried through a multi-generational story, according to the official listing.
Intended scale The publisher’s 2026 listing calls a run about an hour; Dunham told PC Gamer he aimed for a complete story of roughly one or two hours. The publisher describes a multi-generational clan tale; it does not state a typical session or completion length on the cited listing.

Why Thousand Hells can feel especially volatile

In Thousand Hells, the party’s traits are more than character flavor: they are the tools for navigating dynamic narrative encounters. The Steam listing describes four heroes, multiple ways through encounters, and life-or-death choices with persistent consequences. That combination makes each trial a small tactical bet: a relevant skill can improve the odds, but the encounter and the traits you have available still shape what you can do.

PC Gamer’s September 2026 reviewer reports frustration when a badly timed set of available traits seemed to doom a run, and says defeats could feel brutal. That is one reviewer’s account, not a guarantee that every run will feel unfair. It does identify the tension at the heart of the design: preparation matters, but may not feel like control when the game does not make the effect of a choice or the odds of a roll clear.

How much can preparation really help?

For Thousand Hells, party-building can improve your chances when a trait fits a challenge; the PC Gamer review does not describe the dice as wholly arbitrary. But the sources do not establish a precise probability for any particular trait or a general rule that lets players calculate success rates. The distinction matters: a player can make a sensible choice without being able to tell how much it changes the roll.

Kitfox acknowledged that information about character actions and dice rolls was a source of player frustration in a September 2026 community update, saying, “We absolutely hear where you’re coming from and understand that a little more information in-game would alleviate a lot of frustration.” The same update said the developer wanted to preserve risk and uncertainty. That statement describes the discussion at that time; it does not establish whether a later update changed the game’s explanations.

In Six Ages, preparation takes a broader form: decisions about the clan, its resources and relationships accumulate within a simulation-driven story. That gives the player a different kind of agency from matching a party trait to a tactical trial. It does not make outcomes predictable or remove procedural variation; it shifts attention from the odds of one encounter to the chain of choices and events shaping a longer story.

Which game suits which kind of player?

Choose Thousand Hells for compact, repeatable runs

Thousand Hells: The Underworld Heists is the better fit if you want a short mythic adventure built around dynamic encounters, party choices and replaying a story whose pieces can come together differently. A Sharp and Kitfox Games’ 2026 Steam listing advertises more than 280 unique dynamic narrative encounters and an approximately one-hour run; those are publisher figures and a stated typical run length, not an independently measured comparison with Six Ages.

Its tradeoff is that a good plan may not feel reassuring if the relevant trait’s effect or the roll’s odds are hard to read. If you enjoy uncertainty that makes each encounter a live risk, that can be part of the appeal. If you need transparent probabilities to feel that tactical choices are paying off, the reported clarity concerns are worth weighing.

Choose Six Ages for a long-form clan story

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is the stronger fit if you want to lead a clan through resource decisions and simulation-driven events whose effects belong to a broader, multi-generational narrative. Its Steam listing advertises more than 400 interactive story scenes, with appearance and outcomes driven by simulation systems. That count describes a different kind of content from Thousand Hells’ dynamic encounters; the figures should not be treated as an apples-to-apples measure of how much content or variation either game offers.

Verdict

Thousand Hells is more random in the practical, felt sense that its short-run structure puts narrative variation and uncertain dice trials front and center. Six Ages is not a randomness-free alternative: procedural variation and simulation are fundamental to its changing clan story. The choice is less “random or not” than “volatile encounter-by-encounter runs, or uncertainty unfolding through long-term decisions.”

Both games are developed by A Sharp and published by Kitfox Games. Steam lists Thousand Hells: The Underworld Heists as released September 8, 2026, for single-player play on Windows and macOS, and Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind as released October 17, 2019.
