The answer depends on which program you are using, and the title alone does not say. In Chief Architect, the documented Reset Preferences control resets all preferences, not a single tab, and requires a restart. A “Revert” button is a different control, and no official documentation we could check establishes whether it affects one tab or all of them. Confirm the software and version before relying on any one-tab claim.
What the official Chief Architect documentation says
Chief Architect’s support article “Resetting Preferences” (reference KB-00351, last modified January 21, 2026) describes a Reset Preferences control on the Reset Options panel. It restores all preferences to the defaults originally supplied with the program. To reset preferences as the article describes:
- Open Preferences in the program.
- Select the Reset Options panel.
- Click Reset Preferences and confirm the prompt.
- Restart the program. The reset does not take effect until the restart.
The article warns that resetting all of your preferences can be a drastic step if you have made previous changes, and should be done with extreme caution. The statement is attributed to Chief Architect, Inc.; no individual is named.
The same Reset Options panel also has a separate Reset Message Boxes control. The article does not describe it as affecting tabs, so do not treat it as a tab-level reset.

Where the “Revert only changes the current tab” claim comes from
A third-party article matching this exact title says the Revert button restores only the current Preferences tab. The article is on Robots.net: Robots.net article on the Revert button and preferences tabs. We could not open that page to check its wording or the application it covers, and the Chief Architect article above does not mention a Revert button at all. Treat the one-tab claim as unverified.

How to find out what your Revert button does
- Identify the application and version. Check the title bar, the About screen, or the installer name.
- Search that product’s own support site or user manual for “Revert” and “Preferences” together. Official pages are more reliable than the search-result summary.
- If the official documentation names a Revert control, read its scope statement. Look specifically for wording such as “current tab,” “all preferences,” or “unsaved changes.”
- If the documentation does not mention Revert at all, the button’s scope is not established for that product. Test it on a non-critical setting first, and back up any custom configuration before resetting all preferences.
What to do if you need a full reset
If you are using Chief Architect and want all preferences back to their original state, use Reset Preferences from the Reset Options panel as described above, then restart the program. Because the vendor describes this as a drastic step, record any custom preference settings you want to keep before you start.
If your Revert button is in a different product, use that product’s documentation for its scope. Do not assume the Chief Architect behavior applies to it.
