You can revert a Chrome browser update in limited circumstances, but the method depends on whether you use Chrome on Windows, macOS, or Linux, a managed work browser, or ChromeOS on a Chromebook. A browser downgrade can put local data at risk and leave you exposed to known security issues. Back up important information first, and treat an older version as a temporary troubleshooting step.
First, identify what you want to roll back
Chrome is the browser; ChromeOS is the operating system on a Chromebook. Reinstalling an older browser version and rolling back ChromeOS are different procedures, with different eligibility rules and data consequences.

- Personal computer: You may be considering uninstalling and reinstalling the Chrome browser.
- Work or school computer: An administrator may be able to roll back a managed Chrome browser through policy.
- Chromebook: A ChromeOS rollback is an administrator-managed operating-system action, not a browser downgrade.
Before reverting, protect your data and device
Google warns that running an earlier Chrome version can expose users to known security issues and recommends using the latest version. If you downgrade to troubleshoot a compatibility problem, plan to return to a supported current release once the problem is resolved. Google’s Chrome Enterprise rollback guidance explains the managed-browser limits and security warning.
- Confirm Chrome Sync is on and has finished syncing, and make a separate backup of anything important. Sync is not a substitute for checking that your data is available.
- Do not remove a Chrome profile or uninstall the browser until you understand what data is stored locally and how it will be restored.
- Do not assume a particular old installer or rollback target is available for your device. Availability depends on platform, version, management policy, and current support.
If Chrome is managed by work or school
Contact your organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its update policy. For managed browsers, an administrator can set a target version and select a rollback to that target. Google documents this as a temporary rollback limited to the three latest major browser releases; it is not a general option available to every Chrome user. Google’s administrator instructions cover the policy controls.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Google also documents locally stored snapshots after major updates. The default is to retain the three most recent snapshots, though policy can control retention. A compatible rollback to Chrome 83 or newer may restore items such as bookmarks, history, session restore data, passwords, autofill, cookies, and browser sign-in state. Data saved after the latest update may still be lost, particularly if Chrome Sync is not enabled; snapshot behavior depends on policy and version. Google’s rollback documentation and snapshot information describe these qualifications.
If you use Chrome on Windows, macOS, or Linux
Google’s Chrome Enterprise FAQ describes a manual downgrade approach: uninstall the current browser, remove the user profile data directory, and install an older version. This is not a safe routine recommendation for all consumer users. Removing the profile directory permanently deletes locally stored bookmarks, browsing history, and other saved information, so verify sync and make a separate backup before considering it. The FAQ’s procedure and support information are at Google Chrome Enterprise FAQ.

There is an important Windows limitation: Google says older Windows MSI versions are unavailable and unsupported. Do not treat an MSI as a source for an older supported build, and do not download installers from untrusted sources. The FAQ does not establish that a particular older installer is currently available for other platforms either.
If you mean a Chromebook, understand ChromeOS rollback
ChromeOS rollback is an operating-system rollback configured by an administrator in the Google Admin console. It is not the way to revert only the Chrome browser. Google limits rollback to recent eligible versions; availability depends on the device and rollback conditions. The device must restart, wipe, and re-enroll, and local data is deleted, including files in Downloads. Some devices, including ChromeOS Flex, do not support rollback. Check Google’s ChromeOS rollback guidance and consult your administrator before proceeding.

Try a less disruptive fix for a compatibility problem
Before pursuing a downgrade, check whether the issue is limited to a particular site or extension. Try the site in a private window, temporarily disable extensions to identify a conflict, and check whether the site or extension has an update or workaround. Keep important data synced and backed up. If an older version is necessary, use the applicable administrator-managed route where available, and return to a supported current Chrome version as soon as the compatibility issue is fixed.
Google describes a general browser update cadence of every two weeks and ChromeOS device updates of approximately every four weeks; these are general schedules, not guarantees for a particular device or update. See the Chrome Enterprise and Education FAQ.
