What RetroDriveAA says it can do
In an April 4, 2026 post, the developer described RetroDriveAA as a DOSBox-based app with both phone and Android Auto modes. According to that description, the phone and car share a game library and save states; users can import games as ZIP files; and a phone can act as a remote controller. A public GitHub profile also lists RetroDriveAA as a DOSBox emulator for Android Auto. These are developer descriptions, not independent confirmation of how the app performs on a particular device. Google announced on September 21, 2026 that the games category for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS had moved from beta to general availability. For Android Auto, Google specifies Android 15 or higher. This platform-level change does not certify RetroDriveAA, show that it is available in Google Play, or guarantee that it runs with a particular phone or head unit. Google’s rule is clear: games are parked apps, not something to use while driving. Android Auto blocks activities when the car is moving or active user-experience restrictions apply. Google also says game audio must stop when driving begins and cannot be resumed while the vehicle is moving. In practical terms, this is a way to fill a wait at a charging stop or pickup—not to turn a commute into a gaming session. Follow the vehicle’s safety rules and do not interact with a game while driving.

Why the sideloading detail needs caution
The developer’s April 4, 2026 post described an APK route for Android 13 and below that required Kinginstaller, and beta registration for Android 14 and above. Those are dated instructions, not a verified current installation guide or compatibility matrix. App access, beta enrollment, and the APK’s availability may have changed.
Google’s current Android Auto overview says apps for use in a real vehicle must come from a trusted source, naming Google Play and ONE store. The available information does not explain how that requirement applies to the developer’s described sideload route. Do not assume that installing the app on a phone means it will appear or run on your car display; check current official Android Auto requirements and the app developer’s current instructions before proceeding. Controls and compatibility: what is and is not established
Google says car screens support touch and that many players prefer a connected gamepad. A Bluetooth game controller is therefore a possible accessory for Android Auto games, but the sources do not confirm that RetroDriveAA supports a specific controller—or that one is required. What to check before trying it
- Confirm that your Android phone meets Google’s Android 15-or-higher threshold for Android Auto games.
- Check Google’s current trusted-source requirements and the developer’s current RetroDriveAA information. Do not rely on the dated Android-version installation split as proof that a sideload will work in your vehicle.
- Use only game files you own or are authorized to run; RetroDriveAA’s developer says the app does not bundle games.
- If you want a physical controller, verify compatibility for your phone, car setup, and the app before buying one. Specific controller support is not established.
- Try games only while parked, and expect Android Auto to block the activity when motion is detected.
RetroDriveAA is not the same as Google’s approved car-game category
Google’s general-availability announcement covers games built and declared for Android Auto and reviewed against Google’s quality guidelines. It does not establish that RetroDriveAA has that approval or is distributed through a trusted store. The key distinction is between Google’s platform support for eligible parked games and this app’s separate, developer-described DOSBox and sideload story. Without confirmation of current availability and device-specific behavior, treat RetroDriveAA as an intriguing possibility rather than a guaranteed way to turn your car screen into an arcade.
