Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Then test directly on YouTube, check encoder settings and network stability, and reconnect the YouTube destination only if the evidence points there. Changing settings at random can hide the cause without fixing it.
Identify what is disconnecting
At the time of a drop, note what each part of the setup reports. These observations help locate the failure; a status message by itself does not prove its cause.
- Does the encoder report a network disconnect or stop streaming?
- Does Restream stop receiving the incoming source?
- Does Restream indicate that only the YouTube destination has a problem?
- Does YouTube Studio still show an incoming stream?
- What time did the drop occur, and what exact error appeared?
Try a direct YouTube test
If possible, stream directly to YouTube without Restream. Restream recommends this test when a YouTube stream will not start. If the direct stream also fails, investigate the encoder, local network, or broader connection rather than assuming the relay is responsible. If direct streaming is stable but the Restream route is not, focus on the Restream ingest, YouTube channel connection, or route between your setup and Restream. Restream’s YouTube troubleshooting guidance
Match encoder settings to YouTube and your connection
Restream’s 2026 YouTube setup guidance specifies H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), resolutions from 240p to 2160p, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second recommended keyframe interval (4 seconds maximum). It gives an overall bitrate range of 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate. These are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the resolution-specific bitrate as a starting point
Restream’s YouTube-specific recommendations, published in 2026, are:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
Restream advises keeping encoder bitrate at or below half of available upload speed. Under that rule of thumb, a connection measuring 10 Mbps upload would support an encoder target of no more than 5 Mbps. Upload capacity can vary during a broadcast, so one speed test is not proof of sustained stability. If your connection cannot hold the target, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again. Distinguish YouTube-specific advice from general baselines
Restream’s general encoder guide gives baseline ranges of 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p/30 and 4,500–6,000 Kbps for 1080p/30, along with H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Those baselines differ from its YouTube-specific table above. For a YouTube broadcast, use the platform-specific table as the starting point, then lower the target if your measured upload connection cannot reliably sustain it. Restream general encoder settings
Check the local network and route to Restream
Test Ethernet and network congestion
If your encoder device can connect to the router by Ethernet, try a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi. Restream recommends hardwiring where possible. This can help isolate wireless instability, but it will not fix an ISP outage, a poor upstream route, an encoder misconfiguration, or a destination-side issue. Avoid saturating the connection with large uploads or other heavy traffic while testing. Restream network diagnostics

Use traceroute as a clue, not a verdict
Restream describes traceroute as a way to inspect route hops and delays. Its guidance suggests live.restream.io for automatic server detection, or a specific Restream server hostname where applicable. Asterisks in the output may mean a hop did not respond; they alone do not show that hop caused your drop. If the route suggests a connection problem, Restream’s suggested actions include contacting your ISP about the line or routing, lowering bitrate, using Ethernet, and restarting the router or modem. Restream network diagnostics
Reconnect YouTube only if that destination is the problem
If your encoder continues sending and Restream appears to receive the source while YouTube alone is affected, verify that Restream is connected to the intended Google account and YouTube channel. Restream’s troubleshooting flow recommends removing and re-adding the channel if needed and describes resetting the YouTube stream key during reconnection. Follow the current dashboard prompts: after a key reset, you may also need to update the key in your encoder. Restream’s YouTube troubleshooting guidance

A live event created through the YouTube mobile app is not supported for going live through Restream, because that event is locked to mobile streaming. Check the event’s origin and settings if it cannot be used as the Restream destination. If the problem persists, test a direct YouTube broadcast to determine whether the failure follows the Restream route. Restream’s YouTube troubleshooting guidance
Reduce dead air while the source reconnects
Disconnect Protection
Restream Disconnect Protection can play a fallback video when an RTMP or SRT source drops. Restream says it requires a Business or custom Enterprise plan, must be configured before going live, and offers 5-, 15-, or 30-minute fallback windows. If the source reconnects within the selected window, the live feed resumes; if the window expires first, the stream ends and must be restarted. This can reduce dead air for viewers, but it does not repair the source or network failure. Restream Disconnect Protection
Backup stream
Restream also documents a backup-stream option and recommends using separate network connections for the primary and backup sources, reducing the chance that one connection failure affects both. A backup adds setup and operational complexity, so it may be more appropriate for a broadcast where continuity matters than for a casual stream. Restream backup stream
Common symptoms and what to try
| What you observe | Next check |
|---|---|
| The encoder reports a network disconnect, or Restream stops receiving the source. | Test Ethernet, review upload stability, and lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the encoder target. |
| Direct YouTube streaming also drops. | Investigate the encoder and the local or ISP connection before focusing on Restream’s channel relay. |
| Direct YouTube is stable, but the Restream route drops. | Check the Restream ingest path, network route, and whether the destination connection is healthy. |
| Only the YouTube destination appears affected. | Verify the Google account and channel, then use Restream’s remove-and-re-add or stream-key reset guidance if needed. |
| A managed network blocks or interrupts the stream. | Ask the administrator to check the Restream host and the ports for your specific streaming mode. |
| Traceroute shows asterisks. | Treat this as a nonresponse from a hop, not proof of the cause; check end-to-end stability and ask the ISP about suspected routing issues. |
| Viewers see dead air during a source reconnect. | Consider a preconfigured fallback or a separately connected backup source if the stream’s continuity warrants the added setup. |
