If your YouTube stream relayed through Restream looks blurry, first check the encoder’s actual output resolution, codec and bitrate; then confirm your upload can sustain that bitrate with headroom. For an H.264 YouTube live stream, current recommendations are 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p60. A Restream preview and YouTube playback can differ because YouTube processes live video for playback; that difference alone does not show that Restream degraded the feed.
Start by checking what your encoder actually sends
A source or canvas set to 1080p does not guarantee that the encoded stream is 1080p. In your encoder, inspect the output resolution and frame rate, video codec, bitrate and rate-control mode, plus the keyframe interval. YouTube’s live guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Choose settings for the YouTube destination and the material you are sending. More motion and a higher frame rate generally need more bitrate to preserve comparable detail, but pushing resolution or bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain can make the stream unstable. Use the bitrate row that matches your codec, resolution and frame rate rather than maximizing every setting by default.
Choose a YouTube live bitrate for your codec
YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations vary by codec. These are live-stream settings, not the separate bitrate recommendations for uploading a recorded video.

| Output | H.264 | H.265/HEVC or AV1 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s current published recommendations; the YouTube Help pages do not show a publication date. Confirm which codec your encoder is using before selecting a value. The 1080p30 baseline in Restream’s general encoder guide is 4,500–6,000 Kbps, but that broad starting point is not a substitute for YouTube’s destination-specific live table. Restream itself advises checking destination requirements. For a YouTube-targeted stream, start with YouTube’s matching recommendation, then reduce the target if your connection cannot sustain it. See Restream’s general encoder settings guide.
Make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream
Measure upload speed—not download speed—under conditions similar to your broadcast, including other devices and applications that will use the connection. YouTube says the total streamed bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, a 14 Mbps stream needs at least 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve that margin; this is a calculation from YouTube’s 20% guidance, not a separate YouTube threshold. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Check the encoder’s configured bitrate against the YouTube recommendation for the selected codec and output.
- Measure available upload capacity while the network is in representative use. Keep the total stream bitrate within capacity and leave the recommended headroom.
- If capacity fluctuates or the stream reports instability, lower bitrate first. If needed, lower resolution or frame rate as well, then test again.
Restream’s troubleshooting guide suggests avoiding unsupported settings, checking upload capacity and server selection, and reducing bitrate, resolution, frame rate or encoder preset when necessary for stability. Its stated minimums of 1.5 Mbps for 720p and 3 Mbps for 1080p are troubleshooting thresholds from that guide, not replacements for YouTube’s recommended rates. See Restream’s encoder-quality troubleshooting guide.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Test stream health and playback in the right order
- Before going public, run a test with representative movement and audio. A static screen can conceal bitrate problems that become obvious during motion.
- During the stream, review YouTube’s stream health and any warnings. Check that the incoming resolution, frame rate and bitrate match the encoder configuration.
- Compare the encoder output or available Restream-side preview with YouTube’s stream-health information and playback quality options. Change one setting at a time and observe the result before making another adjustment.
- If the incoming feed is clean but YouTube playback looks different, allow for YouTube’s processing and playback options before changing the encoder. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.
Restream says its normal relay passes incoming stream data through without modifying it, while destination platforms process the feed differently. A difference between a Restream-side view and YouTube playback does not, by itself, establish that Restream caused the blur. Without measurements from the encoder, stream-health information and playback, the cause of a particular stream cannot be determined. See Restream’s explanation of platform-specific quality and YouTube’s live-stream processing guidance.

When Restream transcoding may—and may not—help
Restream documents a separately purchased, hourly transcoding add-on that can set output per channel. Its published maximum output is 1920×1080, 6,000 Kbps video, 320 Kbps audio and 60 fps; Restream reports an average 2–3 seconds of added delay. Those limits describe this add-on, not the regular relay. See Restream’s transcoding documentation, dated January 23, 2026.
Transcoding can be relevant when destinations need different channel outputs, but the documentation does not describe it as a general cure for blur. It cannot restore detail already lost before the feed reaches Restream, nor does it fix an encoder or connection that cannot deliver a stable input.

Troubleshoot common blurry-stream symptoms
| What you see | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The stream is soft even when motion is low. | Confirm encoded output resolution and bitrate; do not rely only on the source or canvas setting. | Match the YouTube bitrate table to the actual codec, resolution and frame rate. |
| Quality breaks down during fast movement. | Check whether the bitrate is suitable for the resolution, frame rate and motion in the content. | Test a higher YouTube-recommended setting only if upload capacity can sustain it; otherwise lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| The stream is inconsistent or YouTube reports health warnings. | Check actual upload capacity, competing network use and encoder settings. | Lower bitrate first, then resolution or frame rate if needed; retest under representative network load. |
| Restream preview looks clearer than YouTube playback. | Compare the encoder’s sent settings and YouTube stream-health details; check playback quality options. | Account for YouTube’s live transcoding before attributing the difference to Restream. |
| You are considering the transcoding add-on to fix blur. | Establish whether the incoming feed is already clean and whether different channel outputs are needed. | Do not expect transcoding to recover detail lost upstream or stabilize a weak input. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than troubleshoot a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
