For a YouTube-only 24/7 stream, start by evaluating OBS as the encoder sending directly to YouTube. Restream is a distribution service that can take output from OBS and send it to multiple platforms; it is useful when you need those extra destinations or its other documented workflows, not a required step for a single YouTube stream. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted operation, and a stream running continuously is not the same as a complete replay archive.
Restream and OBS do different jobs
OBS is streaming and production software that encodes your program and sends it to a streaming destination. Restream adds a service layer: it can receive output from software such as OBS and distribute it to multiple platforms. You can therefore use OBS with Restream; they are not necessarily competing alternatives. Restream describes this multistream workflow.
Restream also documents a browser-based Studio and scheduling prerecorded video as live. Those are separate workflows, and the fact that prerecorded scheduling exists does not establish that every plan supports a continuous loop. Check the intended source and operation against Restream’s Help Center.
Which should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | What it means for a 24/7 stream |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A YouTube channel that should keep looping uploaded video without a computer running at home. | Always-on cloud playback, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and a first day free. It streams to YouTube only. |
| OBS directly to YouTube | YouTube is the only destination and you want to operate the encoder on your own computer. | OBS can send the stream to YouTube without Restream. The computer, network, power and stream still need operational attention. |
| OBS through Restream | You need to distribute the same feed to multiple platforms, or need a Restream workflow that fits your source and plan. | OBS remains the encoder; Restream handles distribution. Restream warns that a server may be restarted for maintenance after more than 24 continuous hours. |
For a single ordinary landscape YouTube broadcast, Restream’s documented multistream role may add a layer you do not need. Its YouTube setup page also describes a specialized OBS plugin workflow for sending landscape and portrait as separate YouTube live events; that is not necessary for one landscape stream. Restream says adding a YouTube channel requires channel ownership, not manager or editor access. See its YouTube setup instructions.

What 24/7 operation actually requires
With OBS running locally
OBS depends on the computer and local setup that are running it. A power loss, computer fault, router or ISP outage, or local maintenance can interrupt the feed. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking; an Ethernet cable can help connect a computer to a router where wired networking is practical. It cannot prevent upstream outages or equipment failures.
With Restream in the path
Restream says it does not impose a stream-duration limit, but warns that the server in use may undergo maintenance and restart when a stream has run continuously for more than 24 hours. It suggests restarting every 24 hours to prevent potential issues. This is vendor guidance, not an outage rate or a promise that daily restarts eliminate interruptions. Read Restream’s duration guidance.

Continuous delivery is not the same as replay retention
YouTube’s official encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete replay: plan separately if you need an archive of the underlying recordings. See YouTube’s live encoder help.
Set up OBS directly for YouTube
The steps below describe the direct OBS-to-YouTube workflow at a functional level. Interface labels can change; use the current OBS and YouTube interfaces rather than relying on old screenshots. Before going live for the first time, YouTube live streaming must be enabled and verified. Restream’s July 9, 2026 YouTube setup guidance says first-time streaming requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait; check YouTube’s current account status and follow its prompts.

- Prepare the channel. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and complete any verification or activation steps shown for the account. Allow the required activation period before scheduling a first broadcast.
- Create the live event and obtain its stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live control room and copy the stream URL/key details YouTube provides. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in screenshots.
- Configure OBS to send to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter or authorize the channel details according to the current OBS workflow. If you use a stream key, paste the key for the intended event. Do not send the same key to an untrusted service.
- Check the connection before going live. Use wired Ethernet where practical. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server may be unstable or the configured bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not a universal rule; account for YouTube’s current limits and available upload capacity. Its connection troubleshooting guide explains the distinction.
- Start the encoder and verify the event. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the expected event is receiving the feed before making it public or relying on it. Monitor the stream rather than assuming that an encoder’s running indicator proves viewers can see a healthy broadcast.
- Plan for interruptions and replay. Decide who will notice a stopped stream and how it will be restarted. If a saved replay matters, keep source files or a separate archive plan; the under-12-hour automatic archive rule does not promise one complete recording of a 24/7 signal.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- Dropped frames or an unstable feed: Check the connection to the ingest server and whether bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity. Lower bitrate as needed, test upload capacity, and prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi where possible. OBS’s 75% suggestion is only a starting point, not a guarantee.
- YouTube does not accept the feed: Confirm live streaming is enabled, first-time activation has completed, the event is correct, and the stream key matches it. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the sending setup.
- A Restream-connected stream stops after running for a long time: Restream identifies possible server maintenance restarts beyond 24 continuous hours and recommends restarting daily. That guidance does not rule out other causes; check the encoder, connection and destination status as well.
- The broadcast is live but no complete replay appears: YouTube’s documented automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours. A longer continuous stream should not be treated as a guaranteed single replay archive.
- A channel cannot be added to Restream: Restream says the account adding YouTube must own the channel; manager or editor access is not sufficient for that setup.
Cost and operational trade-offs
OBS is the encoder option in this comparison; Restream is relevant when its distribution or service workflow is useful. The cited documentation does not establish current plan prices, failover guarantees, or an uptime comparison, so do not choose on an assumed price or reliability advantage. For a local setup, also consider the practical cost of keeping the computer, network and power available and monitoring it. For continuous operation, assign responsibility for noticing and responding to interruptions.
