If Documents disappeared from File Explorer, first check whether only its shortcut is missing. A missing pin, a Documents folder redirected through OneDrive, and files left in OneDrive after backup stops are different problems—and each needs a different fix. Start by checking whether your files still exist and which Documents folder you are opening.
Identify what happened to Documents
| What you see | What to check | First action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documents is missing from Home or the left pane, but your files open elsewhere | Your Windows version and the known-folder view | Pin Documents to Quick access | Restores the navigation entry, not missing files. [Microsoft Support: File Explorer in Windows] |
| Documents opens the wrong folder or looks incomplete | OneDrive backup and the folder’s Properties > Location settings | Check the folder that contains the files you want | Can change the known-folder location; confirm the destination before applying it. [Microsoft Support: Where have my Desktop icons gone?] |
| Files went missing locally after OneDrive folder backup stopped | The OneDrive folder and any “Where are my files” shortcut | Move the files you need to the device’s Documents folder | Returns chosen files to the PC; files added locally after backup stops are not covered by that backup setting. [Microsoft Support: Back up your folders with OneDrive] |
| Files were deleted, overwritten, or corrupted in OneDrive | Your account, the OneDrive recycle bin, restore points, and version history | Choose the matching OneDrive recovery option | May recover eligible cloud content, subject to account and retention limits. [Microsoft Support: Restore your OneDrive] |
Restore a missing Documents entry in Windows 11
For Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Documents and other known folders are pinned in Home and the navigation pane by default. In this version behavior, they are no longer displayed under This PC. If only the entry is missing, pin Documents again:

- Open File Explorer and select Home in the left pane.
- Select the Up arrow beside the address bar. This displays Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos.
- Right-click Documents, or press and hold it, then choose Pin to Quick access.
- Check that Documents appears in Home and the navigation pane.
These steps restore a navigation shortcut; they do not recover deleted files or change the folder’s actual location. If you use another Windows version, or the Documents folder itself is missing, this procedure may not address the problem. [Microsoft Support]

OneDrive folder backup can change where familiar folders’ contents appear. Before changing a location, identify the account and the specific Documents folder you have open. A folder named Documents may exist both on the PC and under OneDrive, and they may not contain the same files.

Microsoft’s published location-repair example is for Desktop, not a full Documents walkthrough. It says to repeat the process for Documents if needed. If you have verified which folder contains the files you want, the documented method is:
- In File Explorer, expand the OneDrive folders and right-click the affected known folder.
- Choose Properties, then open the Location tab.
- Select Move, choose the folder containing the desired files, and select Select Folder.
- Select Apply. If Windows asks whether to move files from the old location to the new one, select Yes only after confirming the destination is correct.
If the Location tab is missing, Microsoft notes that the selected Desktop folder may be the wrong one—for example, it may be outside OneDrive or tied to a work or school account. For Documents, treat a missing tab as a reason to check for another folder or account, not proof of a particular cause. Before a location change, you can make a separate copy of important files on external storage as a precaution. Move files back after stopping OneDrive backup
Stopping OneDrive folder backup does not automatically put previously backed-up files back in the device’s Documents folder. Microsoft says those files remain in OneDrive and no longer appear in the device folder. A Where are my files shortcut in the stopped folder opens the OneDrive location.
- Open the OneDrive location from the shortcut, or browse to the relevant folder in OneDrive.
- Find the files you want in the device’s Documents folder. Confirm that you have selected the right copy, especially if matching folders exist in both places.
- If files are cloud-only, right-click them and choose Always keep on this device so they are available locally.
- Move or drag the needed files into the device’s Documents folder.
When stopping backup, Microsoft says users can choose to keep files only in OneDrive, removing them from the computer, or only on the PC, removing them from OneDrive. Check the choice you made and the current sync status before moving files. Files added to the device folder after backup stops are not backed up by that setting. [Microsoft Support]

Try OneDrive recovery if content was deleted or overwritten
If files are missing from OneDrive itself, select the recovery route that matches what happened:
- Undo recent changes across OneDrive: Microsoft says Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Restore your OneDrive to undo file and folder actions from the past 30 days. Files created after the selected restore point are sent to the recycle bin.
- Recover deleted items: Check the OneDrive recycle bin. Microsoft says items permanently deleted from that bin cannot be recovered.
- Recover an earlier file state: Check the file’s version history. Work or school administrators may affect whether version history is available.
Recovery is not guaranteed. The result depends on where the content was stored, how it was deleted or changed, the account and subscription, retention settings, and time elapsed. [Microsoft Support: Restore your OneDrive]
