Resonator kits vary in scale, string count, neck orientation, construction and required work. Identify the format before comparing price or sound.

Round-neck: conventional guitar position

For a ready-made price reference—not a kit—Gold Tone lists its PBR as a round-neck instrument with a mahogany body, Beard cone and spider, and EADGBE tuning. Square-neck: played across the lap
A square-neck model is set up for lap-style playing, often with a slide, rather than ordinary fretting in a standing or seated guitar position. StewMac’s Bluegrass Resomaster manual identifies its project as a square-neck resonator guitar. A beginner who expects to play it like a conventional guitar should check the neck format and intended setup before buying.
Cigar-box format: smaller and fewer strings
The Hubcap Howler’s three- or four-string layout and open-G-oriented strings make it a different learning experience from a six-string resonator. Its 23-inch scale and simplified assembly may suit someone seeking a compact craft project, but it should not be mistaken for an inexpensive standard guitar kit.

What do cone design and body material change?
Resonator instruments can use different cone arrangements, including tricone, biscuit and spider designs. A Guitar Center guide describes biscuit designs as having a punchy attack and spider designs as producing a rounder tone with longer sustain. These are retailer descriptions of tonal tendencies, not results from controlled comparative testing, and the sound of a complete instrument depends on more than cone type. Body material, neck format, cone arrangement and setup all matter when comparing instruments. A product listing may name a cone or body wood, but that alone does not establish how it will sound in a particular player’s hands.

StewMac manuals: woodworking, fitting and setup
StewMac’s Bluegrass Resomaster instructions recommend doing a dry run of fitting, gluing, clamping and finishing before committing to assembly. For that project, the manual advises acclimating the wood to the shop environment for a week and gives ideal conditions of 70–80°F and 45–50% relative humidity. It lists hand tools, multiple clamps, a small router and drill, plus specialty nut-slotting files.
