The website sees the proxy’s exit IP rather than the requester’s original network address. That can help with authorized research that needs location-specific views or multiple exit identities, but it does not grant permission to scrape a site or ensure the site will accept a request.
How do residential proxies work?
- Your scraper sends a request to the proxy provider’s gateway.
- The provider routes it through a participating residential device or connection.
- The destination receives the request from that exit IP and sends its response back along the route.
- The provider either selects or rotates exit IPs, or keeps one for a session, depending on configuration.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center describes a residential proxy as “an intermediary server between individuals and websites they visit to make their connections appear to originate elsewhere.” The practical effect is a change in the source IP presented to the destination. It is not complete anonymity, identity protection, or a guaranteed way around bot checks. FBI/IC3 advisory.

Are residential proxies good for web scraping?
They can be useful when an authorized workflow genuinely needs residential routing, geographic variation, or multiple exit identities. Provider policies cite examples such as market and pricing research, brand protection, ad verification, SEO and search monitoring, authorized security research, localization and availability testing, and lawful public-data collection. These are possible workflows, not blanket permission from the websites involved.

Available evidence does not establish that residential proxies outperform other methods in general, or provide a universal success rate, latency, or cost advantage. Test a candidate only on a permitted workload and compare success, latency, data use, and cost per usable result.

Should I use rotating or sticky residential proxies?
Choose based on whether the workflow needs distinct exit identities or continuity across requests. A provider guide recommends rotation for broad crawling and sticky sessions when multiple steps need the same IP; this is vendor-authored setup guidance, not proof of a universally best configuration. Neither mode guarantees that a target will accept requests.
- Rotating exits: Can suit workflows that need requests distributed across exit IPs.
- Sticky sessions: Can suit a multi-step interaction that needs to preserve the same exit IP.
Check the provider’s session controls, location options, supported protocols, and integration details. Validate behavior against the actual permitted workflow rather than assuming a particular rotation interval or session length will work.
Are residential proxies better than datacenter proxies?
There is no general winner established here. Residential proxies route through consumer-associated IPs; the evidence available does not show a universal performance or cost advantage over datacenter proxies. Start with the task requirement: if it does not require residential routing or geographic variation, compare direct access, official data sources, and less costly proxy options first. If it does, evaluate providers on comparable, authorized requests and report results for the targets and conditions tested rather than generalizing them to all sites.

- Sourcing and consent: Ask what participants are told, what they consent to, how they can opt out, and how upstream suppliers are reviewed. A provider’s own description is disclosure, not independent proof of every source.
- Permission and policy: Check the target’s rules, applicable law, data type, and provider acceptable-use policy. Provider terms do not override third-party rights or site restrictions.
- Workflow fit: Confirm rotation or sticky-session controls, location granularity, protocol and integration support, and whether residential exits are actually necessary.
- Reliability and cost: Compare permitted test workloads using success, latency, data consumption, and cost per usable result. Do not treat a pool-size claim or isolated test as universal performance evidence.
- Operational risk: Review support, abuse response, data handling, and how the provider investigates complaints.
Permission, privacy, and responsible collection
A proxy provider supplies connectivity; that alone does not authorize access to, collection, copying, use, resale, or exploitation of third-party content or services. Infatica’s Acceptable Use Policy says: “Infatica provides connectivity and proxy infrastructure only and does not authorize Customer to access, collect, scrape, copy, use, resell, or exploit any third-party content, data, account, system, or service.” Its policy also places compliance obligations on the customer and notes that permitted use does not guarantee technical access. Read the current terms for any service you consider. Infatica Acceptable Use Policy.

Before sending traffic, document the target, purpose, fields collected, collection rate, retention period, and legal basis. Check site rules, access controls, rate limits, and applicable privacy requirements. Avoid private, login-protected, personal, or sensitive data unless the activity has been specifically authorized and reviewed. Public visibility, a robots.txt convention, or use of a residential IP does not by itself settle whether collection is permitted. Applicable rules depend on the jurisdiction, target, data, and circumstances; the sources here do not establish a jurisdiction-specific legal rule.
What residential sourcing means for device owners
The FBI says residential addresses may come from people who knowingly participate or from owners who are unaware. It describes risks and acquisition paths including SDK partnerships, hidden VPN terms, compromised IoT equipment, malware, and bandwidth-sharing applications. Ask a provider how users are informed, how consent is captured, how opt-out works, and how complaints or suspicious activity are handled.
The FBI advises caution with free VPN apps, pirated downloads, unofficial app stores, sideloaded software, and dubious free streaming devices, and recommends keeping device software and firmware updated. Device owners should be alert to software that may silently enroll their connection; operators should protect the people whose connections carry traffic. The academic study in this area describes particular networks and observations, not a representative measure of all providers or users. FBI/IC3 advisory; network-operator study.

Web scraping without a residential proxy: take a screenshot with a browser
If the goal is to inspect or document a page rather than crawl it at scale, a browser screenshot may be sufficient. A local browser workflow avoids adding a proxy service, though the browser still needs to load the page and comply with its access rules. For example, with Playwright in Node.js:
-
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser:
npm install playwrightnpx playwright install chromium -
Save the following as
shot.mjs, replacing the URL with a page you are authorized to access:import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
} -
Run it with
node shot.mjs. It writes a full-page PNG asshot.png.Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Browser capture troubleshooting
- Browser executable missing: Run
npx playwright install chromiumafter installing the package. - Navigation timeout: The page may have long-running network activity or be slow to load. Use a suitable timeout and a narrower readiness condition, such as waiting for a page-specific selector, when appropriate.
- Blank or incomplete content: Confirm that the page is reachable and the expected content has loaded before capturing. Some content appears only after scrolling or user interaction.
- Access denied or challenge page: Do not treat a screenshot workflow or proxy as authorization to evade access controls; use an approved API or request permission.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-call screenshot API, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from a URL. Its API supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP captures, and requests can be configured for full-page capture and other capture options. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Best Value
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a residential proxy the same as a VPN?
No. A residential proxy routes traffic through a proxy exit IP; a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between a device and a VPN endpoint. The exact services and protections depend on the product.
Does using a residential proxy make scraping legal?
No. A proxy changes the apparent source IP; it does not grant permission or determine whether a collection activity is lawful.
