A residential proxy routes your browser or scraper’s traffic through an IP address associated with a residential network. It changes where requests appear to come from; it does not provide a scraper, grant permission to collect data, or make restricted collection acceptable. For an authorized workflow, choose a provider and session model that fit the task, then configure the proxy in your client—Playwright supports HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxies globally or per browser context.
What a residential proxy does—and does not do
In a typical setup, your scraper or browser connects to a proxy endpoint. The proxy forwards its traffic to the destination, which sees the proxy’s egress IP rather than your device’s direct IP. Depending on the provider and plan, you may be able to choose a location, rotate egress IPs, or keep a session persistent.

The proxy is only one part of the request path. Your code still decides what to request and how to process the response; a browser automation framework still renders and interacts with pages. A proxy does not guarantee access, anonymity, lower blocking, or compliance. Residential-proxy providers describe possible uses and benefits on their own sites, but those descriptions are not independent performance evidence.
Check authorization before sending automated traffic
Before configuring a proxy, establish that your collection is permitted. Review the site’s terms, authentication requirements, applicable privacy obligations, and any agreement with the site owner. Check your proxy provider’s acceptable-use rules too: provider policies differ, and the provider may prohibit a workflow even if the destination is publicly reachable.

Infatica’s acceptable-use policy gives market intelligence, lawful public web-data collection, ad verification, and localization testing as potentially legitimate business uses, subject to its agreement and applicable law. The same policy prohibits unauthorized access and efforts to evade access controls, authentication, rate limits, anti-bot systems, CAPTCHAs, or safety restrictions. That is Infatica’s policy, not a universal list of permissions or rules for every provider.
Robots.txt is a signal about crawler preferences, not a permission slip. The Internet Engineering Task Force’s RFC 9309, published in September 2022, states: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” A site’s robots.txt instructions do not grant access or override authentication, terms, or law. Amazon’s developer documentation, for example, describes behavior for Amazonbot, Amzn-SearchBot, and Amzn-User; those Amazon-specific directives do not define how every automated client should behave.
If access is unclear, use an official API, request permission, narrow the collection to what you are authorized to gather, or stop when asked. Do not use proxy routing to get around a restriction. The sources described here do not determine whether a particular collection is legal in a particular jurisdiction; seek qualified legal advice for that assessment.

A residential proxy may be relevant when an authorized task needs requests to exit through a residential-network address or a particular location. ResidentialProxy.io describes residential proxies for web scraping and browser automation; that is a vendor’s description of use, not evidence that residential routing will work better for every target.
Decide first what the workflow needs: location selection, continuity between related requests, or separate egress for independent work. If you do not have authorization to access the target or its automated access is restricted, changing egress does not solve that problem.
Configure a proxy in Playwright
Playwright’s official Network guide documents HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxies. Configuration can apply to a whole browser launch or to an individual browser context. The example below is a Node.js pattern using a provider’s endpoint and credentials supplied through environment variables; replace the example target with a site you are authorized to access. Providers differ in endpoint format and authentication, so use the values and session controls from your own provider’s current documentation.
Launch a browser through the proxy
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const { PROXY_SERVER, PROXY_USERNAME, PROXY_PASSWORD } = process.env;
if (!PROXY_SERVER) throw new Error('Set PROXY_SERVER to your provider endpoint');
const proxy = {
server: PROXY_SERVER, // for example, the provider's documented HTTP(S) or SOCKSv5 endpoint
...(PROXY_USERNAME ? { username: PROXY_USERNAME } : {}),
...(PROXY_PASSWORD ? { password: PROXY_PASSWORD } : {}),
};
const browser = await chromium.launch({ proxy });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com/', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30000,
});
console.log({ status: response?.status(), title: await page.title() });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install Playwright in your project and install its Chromium browser before running the script. Set PROXY_SERVER, and—if your provider requires them—PROXY_USERNAME and PROXY_PASSWORD in the process environment. Keep secrets out of source control, shared logs, and screenshots. Do not assume every provider accepts credentials in the same format or supports both protocols.

If the browser process needs separate network settings for different authorized tasks, pass the proxy configuration when creating a context:
const context = await browser.newContext({ proxy });
const page = await context.newPage();
Use the context-level setting only if it is supported by the browser type and Playwright version in your application. The provider’s proxy endpoint remains provider-specific. Playwright also documents optional proxy credentials and bypass hosts; only set bypass rules when you understand which destinations should connect directly rather than through the proxy.
Choose rotating or sticky sessions by task continuity
| Session approach | When it can fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Rotating | Independent requests or workers can use different egress addresses. | How rotation is triggered, whether it is automatic or configurable, and how the provider represents a session. |
| Sticky | A multi-step flow depends on continuity, such as pagination or a cart workflow. | How to request a persistent session, its duration, and what happens when it expires or disconnects. |
This distinction reflects provider guidance, not a neutral benchmark. Neither choice establishes that a site will permit the traffic or that a request will succeed. Choose based on the application’s legitimate need for continuity, not as a way to evade detection or access controls.
How to compare residential proxy providers
There is no independently established provider performance ranking, current market-price comparison, or verified provider winner in the sources covered here. Compare the details that affect your own authorized workload instead of relying on unsupported response-time, uptime, coverage, or success-rate claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Protocol and client support: Confirm the endpoint works with your client and whether it supports the HTTP(S) or SOCKSv5 option your Playwright setup needs.
- Geographic availability: Check which locations can actually be selected and at what granularity. Verify current availability and conditions before purchase.
- Session controls: Find out how rotation and sticky sessions are provisioned, controlled, and timed out.
- Authentication and operations: Review credential handling, account security, support channels, and what usage or connection information is available to help diagnose problems.
- IP sourcing and consent: Read how the provider describes the origin of its IP addresses, participant consent, and how it handles abuse reports. Do not treat an “ethical” label by itself as proof.
- Acceptable use: Confirm both that the provider permits your intended workflow and that you have authorization from the site owner.
- Total cost: Check the billing basis, expected traffic charges, and support costs against your workload. Headline rates are not comparable without the terms behind them.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need rendered screenshots or PDFs rather than a custom Playwright workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server—not a residential proxy. It can capture a page without you configuring a browser for that capture. One GET request returns an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common proxy setup failures
- Playwright cannot connect to the proxy: Check that the endpoint is reachable, the port and protocol match the provider’s instructions, and the environment variable is set in the process running the script.
- The proxy rejects authentication: Confirm the provider’s current credential format and whether credentials are required. Check for missing environment variables or accidental whitespace, but do not print passwords to logs.
- A page loads directly instead of through the proxy: Verify that proxy configuration is applied at the browser or context level used for the page. Review any bypass-host setting, which can send matching destinations directly.
- The browser opens but the page fails or returns an error: Separate proxy connectivity from the target’s response. Check the browser error and HTTP status, then consult the provider’s service status or support. Do not respond to a site restriction by trying to defeat it.
- A multi-step flow loses continuity: Check whether the provider assigned a rotating or persistent session and whether its documented session duration covers the flow. The control and naming differ by provider.
- Unexpected charges or usage: Review the provider’s billing unit, retries, and traffic accounting. Put an appropriate request limit in your own job and compare recorded usage with the provider’s account records.
Operational checklist
- Confirm permission, provider terms, and the site’s relevant access rules before running a job.
- Choose a provider based on protocol, location, session controls, sourcing transparency, support, and complete cost—not an unverified performance ranking.
- Store proxy credentials as secrets and test with a small, authorized request before scaling the workflow.
- Use rotating sessions only where independent requests need separate egress; use sticky sessions where the authorized task needs continuity.
- Monitor responses and costs, and stop collection if permission is withdrawn or the workflow encounters a restriction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a residential proxy include a browser or scraping software?
No. It routes traffic through a proxy endpoint; your application still needs a browser or HTTP client and code to request and process pages.
Can I use a residential proxy with any Playwright browser?
Playwright documents HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxy support. Confirm the protocol, endpoint format, and authentication requirements with your provider and the browser configuration you use.
Does a successful proxy connection prove that scraping is allowed?
No. Network connectivity is not authorization. Permission, site terms, applicable law, and the provider’s acceptable-use rules remain separate questions.
