How the playtime ranking was measured
The estimates below are HowLongToBeat player-reported averages reproduced by Insider Gaming in its February 17, 2026 guide. They are not Capcom statistics, controlled tests, or guaranteed first-playthrough durations. The comparison uses remakes where applicable and covers eight mainline entries; it does not rank every original version, remake, spin-off, or side mode. Why the completionist order is different
For a completionist run, Resident Evil 4 is the longest estimate at 64.5 hours, followed by Resident Evil 6 at 52.5 hours. Resident Evil 3 remains the shortest at 20.5 hours. The reversal at the top is why “longest Resident Evil” needs a measure: a main-story comparison puts Resident Evil 6 first, while a completionist comparison puts Resident Evil 4 first.
Can Resident Evil games be ranked by difficulty?
Not reliably as a definitive series-wide list from the available evidence. The cited playtime sources do not provide standardized difficulty scores, and a longer game is not necessarily a harder one. A fair comparison must specify a frame—such as a first playthrough on the default setting or a game’s hardest mode—and look at relevant pressures: ammunition and healing scarcity, enemy behavior, save or checkpoint rules, and any rank or time requirements. Those mechanics differ by entry and mode, so without comparable game-specific evidence, assigning each title a universal difficulty position would be misleading.

Difficulty also changes with familiarity. Knowing puzzle solutions and routes, understanding enemy patterns, and choosing a different mode can make the same game feel substantially easier or harder. Treat the length table as a ranking of estimated time, not as a proxy for challenge.
