Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a strong choice if you want close, first-person survival horror built around fear, exploration, and atmosphere. Its intimate viewpoint is also a significant change from the series’ third-person style, and its movement may feel slow if you prefer fast action. Whether it is worth playing depends on which of those qualities you want from a horror game—and, if you are buying it, which edition and platform listing you choose.
What kind of game is Resident Evil 7?
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a survival-horror game whose defining shift is its first-person perspective. Capcom said that change was intended to create an immersive horror experience, with fear, exploration, and tense atmosphere at the center. Those are design aims, not a guarantee that every player will find the game frightening; they do signal that its appeal is more about sustained unease than nonstop action.

The pros
First-person perspective creates a close, personal viewpoint
The camera keeps the player close to the environment and its threats. Capcom framed the move from the series’ previous third-person camera as a way to make the experience deeply immersive. If you enjoy exploring a horror setting from directly within it, that viewpoint is the game’s clearest strength.

Capcom described the game’s focus as fear, exploration, and tense atmosphere. That makes it a good fit for players who want to investigate unsettling surroundings and sit with suspense rather than spend most of their time in rapid-fire combat. The design may appeal even more if mood and exploration matter as much to you as action.
#1 Best Overall
- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Gold Edition has clearly named additional content
Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition listing describes an edition that includes the base game, Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2, and End of Zoe. Capcom separately described Not a Hero as free DLC for owners in its Not a Hero announcement. Check the listing for your platform and region to confirm what a particular purchase includes.
The cons
First person is a preference-dependent trade-off
The close viewpoint that strengthens immersion also means you do not get the wider third-person view familiar from earlier entries. If you prefer seeing the protagonist and more of the surrounding space at once, the camera may be a persistent drawback rather than a selling point.

Movement may feel slow
In its January 2017 review, TIME praised the isolated settings and creeping viewpoint but criticized the slow movement. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Still, it is worth weighing if you want a brisker, more action-forward pace.

Start with the contents of the exact product listing rather than assuming that every Gold Edition package is identical. Capcom’s Gold Edition page names Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2 and End of Zoe; its separate announcement identifies Not a Hero as free DLC for owners. Current package contents, regional availability, physical-disc configurations, and prices can vary, so confirm them with the relevant storefront before buying.

Also check compatibility on the specific platform you plan to use. The PlayStation US listing notes that PS5 play may require the latest system software. That is a storefront-specific caveat, not a complete compatibility guide for every platform or region.

It is most likely to suit you if you want first-person horror, deliberate exploration, and sustained tension—and if you are comfortable with movement that one contemporary reviewer found slow. You may prefer a different Resident Evil entry if a third-person view or faster action is more important to you. Capcom reported more than 10 million worldwide shipments by October 11, 2021, a dated commercial milestone that shows the game reached a large audience but does not establish whether it will match your tastes. For the design context, see Capcom’s October 11, 2021 announcement.
