Reset Your Wi-Fi Extender and Get It Back Online

A factory reset erases an extender’s settings. Follow your model’s reset instructions, set it up with your router again, then check placement and connectivity if problems remain.

A factory reset can clear a faulty saved setup, but it also erases the extender’s settings. Afterward, you must configure it to connect to your router again. Reset-button timing and confirmation lights differ by model, so check the exact model’s instructions before pressing the button.

Factory reset or restart: know the difference

A restart (or reboot) turns the extender off and back on without intentionally erasing its saved configuration. A factory reset returns it to its default settings. You will need to set it up again and reconnect it to your home router.

Expect personalized settings to be removed. TP-Link says custom configurations are lost; NETGEAR lists saved credentials, network name (SSID), and security settings among the information deleted. Before resetting, make sure you know the Wi-Fi password for your router. TP-Link’s reset guidance explains the configuration loss.

How to factory-reset an extender safely

1. Find the model-specific instructions

Check the extender’s label for its make and model, including hardware revision if shown. Then use the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model. Button locations, hold times, and confirming LED patterns are not universal.

For example, TP-Link instructions differ across support articles: its general procedure says one to two seconds, another troubleshooting article says one second and notes some earlier firmware may need about five seconds until the Power LED blinks, and an older page describes releasing when all LEDs flash once. These are not interchangeable rules; follow the instructions for your model and firmware. See TP-Link’s factory-reset article and its support guidance.

2. Press the reset button and wait for the device to reboot

Use the model’s specified reset or factory-reset control and watch for the confirmation light pattern in its instructions. If the button is recessed, a pin or paper clip can help press it. Do not keep holding the button based on another brand’s timing.

As a brand-specific example, NETGEAR says to wait until the Power LED is steady, press and hold the recessed Reset or Factory Reset button until the Power LED blinks (up to 15 seconds), then wait for the light to return to steady green or blue. This applies to NETGEAR guidance, not all extenders. Follow the instructions for your device: NETGEAR support.

Set up the extender again after the reset

  1. Start near the router. Put the extender close enough to connect reliably while you configure it. TP-Link recommends within 16 feet of the router for initial setup; this is TP-Link guidance, not a universal distance. If setup fails, verify the router’s Wi-Fi password. See TP-Link setup troubleshooting.
  2. Use the model’s setup method. Open the manufacturer’s setup app or web interface. The extender’s label may show its default Wi-Fi name, password, or login details.
  3. Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password. In TP-Link’s illustrated setup, this means selecting the router’s 2.4 GHz network name and entering the router’s Wi-Fi password. Do not confuse that password with a separate password used to manage the extender.
  4. Confirm that the extender connects. A reset leaves it at default settings; it will not have internet access through the router until setup is complete.
  5. Move it to a useful location. Once setup works, place it roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area, while keeping it within usable router range. If it cannot maintain a connection, move it closer to the router. TP-Link’s placement guidance covers these setup checks.

If the extender still has no internet or poor performance

Work through the connection from the router outward. A reset cannot fix an internet outage or make a weak signal reach farther by itself.

TP-Link WiFi Extender with Ethernet Port, Dual Band 5GHz/2.4GHz, Up to 44% More Bandwidth Than Single Band, Covers Up to 1200 Sq.ft and 30 Devices, Signal Booster Amplifier Supports OneMesh(RE220)
  • Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
  • Check the router’s internet connection. Connect a phone or computer directly to the router’s Wi-Fi. If that device also has no internet, troubleshoot the router or internet service before the extender.
  • Check the saved network details. Confirm the extender was configured for the correct router network and password. If the router’s network name or password changed, update the extender’s connection.
  • Test closer to the router. Temporarily move the extender nearer to the router. If it connects there but not at its usual spot, the placement may be outside the router’s usable range.
  • Investigate band or channel issues only when relevant. TP-Link notes that some 5 GHz channel conditions can make connections unstable. Check the router’s documentation and applicable channel settings if that matches your symptoms; those settings are not universal fixes. See TP-Link troubleshooting.

A clean configuration may resolve a saved-setting fault, but resetting alone does not guarantee faster Wi-Fi or greater range. Placement, interference, device compatibility, router connectivity, and the home’s layout all affect results.
