To reset Microsoft Word, first restore an individual setting in Word Options; for new-document defaults on Windows, rename Normal.dotm so Word creates a fresh template. If settings remain damaged across documents, Microsoft documents a registry reset as advanced troubleshooting. Word’s /a switch is a temporary diagnostic mode, not a permanent reset.
The steps below focus on Windows; Word for Mac has different instructions and does not use the Windows registry paths in this guide. Back up templates or registry keys before making changes, and use the least disruptive method that addresses your problem.
Choose the right reset method
| Method | Scope | Platform | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change one setting in Word Options | A single preference | Windows | Low; change the preference back if needed |
| Rename Normal.dotm | Defaults and customizations for new documents | Windows | Reversible if you keep the renamed template |
| Reset Word registry preferences | Broader Word configuration when simpler checks fail | Windows | Advanced; export the key first and follow Microsoft’s instructions |
| Use Word’s /a switch | Temporary diagnostic test, not a saved-settings reset | Windows | Low; restart normally to return to your usual setup |
1. Restore an individual setting in Word Options
If just one preference changed, fix that option directly instead of resetting unrelated settings. Microsoft identifies Word Options as the place to view and update Word settings and preferences.
- Open Word and select File > Options.
- Find the relevant section and change the specific preference.
- Select OK, then check whether the issue is resolved.
Microsoft’s Word Options guidance covers Microsoft 365 and Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. See Microsoft Support’s Word Options (General).

2. Reset new-document defaults by renaming Normal.dotm
Use this Windows method if styles, formatting defaults, or other settings for new documents seem wrong. Microsoft explains that “The Normal.dotm template opens whenever you start Microsoft Word, and it includes default styles and customizations that determine the basic look of a document.” Renaming the file lets Word create a fresh template; your old customizations are not automatically transferred.
- Close Word.
- Open File Explorer and enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates in the address bar.
- Find Normal.dotm and rename it, for example, to OldNormal.dotm. Keep the renamed file as a backup.
- Start Word. It creates a new Normal.dotm with default settings when the original is absent from its expected location.
- Test a new document. If you need your old styles or macros, retain the backup and restore or migrate only what you need.
Microsoft’s instructions are in Change the Normal template (Normal.dotm).

3. Reset Word registry preferences for persistent Windows problems
Consider this advanced step only if the problem affects multiple documents and simpler checks have not helped. Editing the registry incorrectly can cause serious problems, so export the relevant key first and follow Microsoft’s current troubleshooting instructions exactly. Do not delete an entire Office folder or guess at a version-specific path.
- Close Word.
- Open Microsoft’s Word troubleshooting article and find its instructions for resetting the Word Data or Word Options registry key.
- Export the specific key as a backup before deleting or changing it, following Microsoft’s steps.
- Restart Word and check the affected documents and preferences. Be aware that settings such as the recent-file list may reset.
For current versions, the documented Word Data key path is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data; version-specific paths may differ. Use Microsoft’s article to confirm the applicable key and steps before making any change.

Use /a to diagnose, not permanently reset
On Windows, Word’s /a switch starts Word without loading add-ins or using the existing Normal.dotm. This can help identify whether an add-in or template is involved, but it does not permanently reset saved preferences.
- Close Word.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter winword /a and press Enter.
- Test the problem. If it no longer occurs, an add-in or the existing template may be involved; close Word and restart it normally to return to your usual settings.

FAQ
Will renaming Normal.dotm delete my documents?
No. This changes Word’s global template, not your document files. Keep the renamed template if you may need its custom styles, macros, or other customizations; they are not automatically transferred to the new template.
Does winword /a reset Word permanently?
No. It starts Word temporarily without add-ins and the existing Normal.dotm, which makes it useful for diagnosis. Restart Word normally to use your usual setup.
Should I reset the registry to fix one changed preference?
No. Change the individual setting in Word Options first. Registry changes are advanced troubleshooting for persistent issues, and Microsoft instructs users to export the key before changing it.
Can I use these Windows steps on Word for Mac?
No. Mac’s preference and template instructions differ, and Windows registry paths do not apply. Follow Microsoft’s Mac-specific guidance for your version.
