If you cannot use the menus, hold the player’s physical Reset button while it is powered on. Roku’s general guidance is about 10 seconds; a third-party-hosted copy of the Roku 3 4200R manual specifies 15 seconds.
Before you reset: try a restart for a temporary freeze
If the Roku is merely frozen and you do not need to erase it, restart it first. Unplug the player for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it. If the menus still respond, use Settings > System > System restart. A restart does not erase your settings. Roku’s restart and network troubleshooting guidance distinguishes a system restart from a network connection reset.

Factory reset from the Roku menus
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Select Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm. Roku says the Roku mobile app can also navigate this procedure when available.

Reset with the physical button when menus do not work
Roku streaming players generally
With the player powered on, find the physical Reset button on its back or bottom. Depending on the player, it may be a tactile button or recessed pinhole. Press and hold it for about 10 seconds; release when the status light blinks rapidly. This is Roku’s general guidance for streaming players, not a guarantee that every model or revision uses an identical button design or timing. Roku Support provides the current general instruction.

Roku 3 4200R
A copy of the Roku 3 4200R user guide hosted by Manualzz specifies holding Reset for 15 seconds to factory reset. That model-specific duration comes from a third-party-hosted manual copy, while Roku’s current general player guidance says about 10 seconds. Check the back and underside of your Roku 3 for the button; if it is not apparent, consult documentation for your exact model. What a factory reset removes and what to prepare
Roku describes a factory reset as erasing most device data and restoring factory-default settings. It removes personal preferences, unlinks the player from its Roku account, and removes apps and account information. The player returns to initial setup and cannot stream again until you complete Guided Setup and activation.

Have these details ready before confirming:
- Roku account email and password. If the player is linked to a previous owner’s account, that person’s credentials may be needed to activate it.
- Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Streaming-app sign-ins. You will need to install apps again and sign in to each one.
- Parental-control PIN, if one is set on the Roku account.

Keep Roku TV instructions separate
A Roku 3 is a streaming player, not a Roku TV. Roku TV reset-button variants and Recovery Mode instructions are for televisions and should not be used to locate or reset the Roku 3 player. Likewise, Roku’s unlinked-mode guidance for some TVs is not a setup workaround for a Roku 3.
