First identify the exact Bose model: button sequences differ. On the Bose Portable Smart Speaker, hold Play/Pause for 10 seconds to reboot without erasing settings. A factory restore is separate: it erases settings and uses Bluetooth + Volume + for 10 seconds after the required account and voice-assistant cleanup.
Check your Bose speaker model first
These steps are for the Bose Portable Smart Speaker, which Bose lists as sold from 2019. Do not assume the same buttons work on another Bose speaker. Bose’s app compatibility information also lists products such as the Home Speaker 300 and Bose Smart Speaker 500 (also called Home Speaker 500), but that does not make the Portable Smart Speaker reset instructions applicable to them. Find the support page for your exact model if its name differs.

For example, the older SoundTouch Portable uses AUX for a temporary reset and Preset 1 + Volume Down for a factory restore—different controls from the Portable Smart Speaker. Bose’s model-specific support instructions and its SoundTouch Portable support page should guide those procedures.

Bose’s word “reset” can refer to the temporary reboot; it does not necessarily mean a factory restore. Try the reboot first if you want to retain your setup.

Reboot the Bose Portable Smart Speaker without erasing settings
- Locate the Play/Pause button on the speaker.
- Press and hold it for 10 seconds.
- Wait while the light ring pulses white at the top and bottom. This indicates that the speaker is rebooting; it should then reconnect to Wi-Fi.
Bose describes this reset as a way to correct minor processor errors and says settings are not lost unless otherwise indicated.
Factory restore the Portable Smart Speaker
A factory restore clears the speaker’s settings. Before using the buttons, remove the speaker and any configured voice assistant from the relevant accounts as described below. Bose’s complete Portable Smart Speaker instructions cover the account steps and should be followed if the app labels or process differ.

If you did not add a voice assistant
- Remove the product from your Bose account.
- Connect the speaker to power and wait for any pulsing white lights to stop.
- Press and hold Bluetooth and Volume + together for 10 seconds, until the light ring fills with white.
- Wait for the ring to blink twice as the speaker reboots. Two steady amber lights indicate setup mode.
- Open the Bose app and configure the speaker again.
If Alexa was configured
- Deregister the Bose product in the Alexa app.
- Remove Alexa from the Bose account.
- Remove the product from the Bose account.
- Follow Bose’s button procedure for the factory restore, then set up the speaker again in the Bose app.
If Google Assistant was configured
- Remove Google Assistant from the Bose account.
- Remove the product from the Bose account.
- Follow Bose’s button procedure for the factory restore, then set up the speaker again in the Bose app.
If the reset does not fix the problem
If the speaker continues to show a hardware error, consult Bose support rather than repeatedly resetting it. Bose’s Portable Smart Speaker LED guidance says the product may need service; this is not a guarantee that service is the only remedy for every symptom. For any Bose model other than the Portable Smart Speaker, use that model’s official support instructions instead of trying a button sequence by analogy.
