First find the exact model name or number, then check its printed or official guide to see whether the battery is removable, user-replaceable, or non-removable. Which Nokia model do you have? That determines whether you can replace the battery yourself and which procedure applies; there is no safe universal Nokia battery-swap sequence.
Find your Nokia model and battery category
Look in Settings > About phone, on the product label, packaging, or in the user guide. HMD’s guidance is to “see the printed guide” to check whether the battery is removable, non-removable, or user-replaceable. Then find instructions that match your exact model; a procedure for one Nokia phone is not evidence that another opens the same way.
- Removable: The guide describes a battery intended to be taken out by opening the back cover.
- User-replaceable or model-specific self-repair: Follow the official instructions for that exact model and market, including its tool and safety requirements.
- Non-removable, or no matching procedure: Do not pry open the phone. Contact HMD/Nokia support or an authorised service facility.
If the guide says the battery is removable
- Power the phone off and unplug the charger. Do this before removing the cover or battery.
- Use only the specified replacement. Choose an original rechargeable battery specified for your exact phone. Do not assume a battery advertised for another Nokia model will fit; HMD warns that incompatible batteries can create fire, explosion, or other hazards.
- Open only as the model guide shows. For example, HMD’s dismantling manual for Nokia 105, Nokia 110, HMD 105 4G, and HMD 110 4G shows opening the back at its indicated notch and lifting the battery by its tape. Those details apply to those listed models, not to Nokia phones generally. Consult the full instructions before any more complex work.
- Handle the cell gently. Keep metal objects away from its contacts. Do not dismantle, cut, crush, bend, or puncture the battery.
- Keep the removed battery separate for proper disposal. Follow local rules and recycle it where possible.
If the battery is user-replaceable or has a self-repair guide
Use the official instructions for the exact model and market, not a video or guide for a similar-looking phone. Check that you have the specified replacement part and tools before starting. If the model-matched procedure is unavailable, or the tools or steps are beyond your experience, use an authorised service facility.
Why internal-battery instructions cannot be generalized
HMD’s Crest/Crest Max repair guide is a model-specific example, not a Nokia-wide method. Dated June 22, 2024, it requires the battery to be below 25% charge before work begins, lists dedicated tools, says not to reuse the removed battery, and warns that puncturing or creasing it can cause chemical leakage or fire. Do not transfer its steps or precautions as a substitute for the guide matching your phone.

When to stop and use service
If the guide identifies a non-removable battery, or you cannot find a matching official self-repair procedure, do not pry the phone open. HMD says attempting to remove a battery from a Nokia 3 may damage the device and directs owners toward an authorised service facility. If the battery or charger is damaged, have it assessed at a service centre or local phone shop before continued use.
DIY versus service depends on the phone’s battery category, whether model-matched instructions exist, the required tools and your comfort using them, and access to the correct replacement part. Repair prices and local service availability vary and are not established here.

Dispose of the old battery safely
Do not put the removed cell aside with ordinary household rubbish unless local rules specifically allow it. HMD instructs owners to follow local regulations and recycle where possible; its dismantling manual also says to keep the removed battery separate and dispose of it under local regulations.

HMD’s 2024 product information sheets identify two Nokia feature phones with end-user battery repairability. These examples help show why the model number matters; they do not establish compatibility, part numbers, or a repair process for other phones.
