It may recover around 12 GB or more in some cases, but that amount is not guaranteed—and removing the models disables many Apple Intelligence features. The tool’s compatibility and behavior are version-sensitive, so check the project’s current documentation before using it.
What RemoveMacAI does—and what it does not promise
RemoveMacAI is third-party software, not an Apple utility. Its project documentation describes using a configuration profile to restrict Apple Intelligence, removing models through Apple’s asset service, and directing future downloads of removed models to a closed local port. The developer says the utility leaves System Integrity Protection enabled and does not modify files under /System. These are the project’s claims, not independently verified findings. The tool targets Apple Intelligence model assets; it does not remove every form of AI or cloud processing from a Mac. Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run on-device, while more complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute. Feature availability also depends on language and region. Does it actually free 12 GB?
MacRumors reported on October 6, 2026, that RemoveMacAI could free about 12 GB or more, while some user reports cited by the article exceeded 20 GB. These are variable reported outcomes, not a controlled test or a guarantee for a particular Mac. MacRumors’ report provides that context.

A separate 9to5Mac report dated October 5, 2026, said Apple lists up to 14 GB for its latest models on newer Macs. That figure describes model storage, not the amount RemoveMacAI will necessarily return. See 9to5Mac’s report.
To inspect your Mac’s storage, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Apple notes that the macOS and System Data categories cannot be selected and deleted from this panel. The RemoveMacAI project also warns that Storage settings may continue counting Apple Intelligence after model removal while macOS deletes files on its own schedule, so the displayed total may not change immediately. Which Apple Intelligence features stop working?
The project lists a broad set of affected capabilities. If you rely on any of these, the storage tradeoff may not be worthwhile:
- Siri, including “Hey Siri” and the menu-bar icon
- Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and the ChatGPT extension
- Summaries in Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes, and notifications; Mail smart replies; and inline text predictions
- Photos Clean Up and Spatial Photos
- Xcode predictive code completion
- Apps built on Apple’s Foundation Models framework, the Use Model action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence, and Calendar natural-language editing
The project says dictation remains available because it is controlled separately and uses speech models that are not removed. Its full feature list and caveats are in the project documentation.

Check compatibility before you proceed
According to the project, RemoveMacAI requires Apple silicon and currently supports macOS 27. The README says it was tested on macOS 27.0 and specifies version 0.2.3 or later for macOS 27.0.1; macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported. Because these requirements can change, confirm the latest release notes and instructions before downloading or running it.

What to know about undoing the changes
The developer says the utility can be reverted with removemacai revert or the app’s Undo Everything action. The project also says its configuration profile persists across updates, while some other settings may need to be reapplied if an update resets them. Review the current instructions for the specific release and macOS version you use; reversibility is described by the project, not independently tested here.
