Removing an Xbox from your Microsoft account’s device list does not close the account. The key is choosing the action you actually need: remove a console you no longer use, unlink a device to free a Microsoft Store slot, or close the entire Microsoft account. Only the last option puts your Xbox profile and purchased content at risk of permanent deletion.
First, identify what you mean by “remove Xbox”
These three actions affect different things. Microsoft provides separate instructions for managing devices and closing an account, so removing a console entry is not the same as deleting the account used to sign in to Xbox.

What happens when you remove a console from the device list?
Removing a console listing is a device-management action; it does not, by itself, close your Microsoft account. Microsoft’s device guidance distinguishes removing a device from unlinking one to release a Store device slot. Neither action is described as transferring or deleting an Xbox profile or gamertag.
If you are selling, gifting, or recycling the console
Back up settings, reset the console to factory defaults, and then remove the device from your Microsoft account. A reset clears personal information from the console; removing the device from the account is a separate step. Microsoft’s cited reset instructions specifically cover Xbox One, so check the current reset guidance for your console generation rather than assuming the menus are identical.

If your goal is to free a Microsoft Store device slot
Microsoft says apps and content from the Microsoft Store can be downloaded to up to 10 attached devices. To free a slot, sign in to the account’s device-management page and choose Unlink for the relevant device. An unlinked device stops counting toward the limit, but downloading an app or game on it later can make it count again. Unlinking addresses the device limit; it is not an Xbox-profile transfer.
What happens if you close the Microsoft account?
Closing the Microsoft account is the consequential option. Microsoft’s process asks you to sign in, review the closure checklist, select a reopening period of 30 or 60 days, and mark the account for closure. If you reset all sign-in verification details, Microsoft says you must wait 60 days before closing it.

During the selected reopening period, you can reopen the account by signing in and entering a security code. Microsoft says that after the period ends the account cannot be reopened and is permanently deleted; its closure guidance says the account’s data and content are deleted after the reopening window.

Microsoft’s reopening guidance specifically names the Xbox profile gamertag, Gamerscore, and purchased content as available when the account is reopened during that grace period. That is not a promise that they will remain accessible after permanent deletion. Do not close the account if you want to keep access to its Xbox profile or purchases.

Check subscriptions and purchases before closing an account
Before starting closure, confirm which Microsoft account owns your Xbox or Microsoft subscriptions and review its Services & subscriptions page. Microsoft’s account dashboard also provides access to subscription management, order history, and payment settings.
If you reopen the account, Microsoft says remaining subscription time is available, but time spent while the account is pending closure is not restored. If a subscription expires during that period or was cancelled outright, you must repurchase it. Other subscriptions cancelled before closure may need to be reinstated through the original service or provider.

Before you take action
- Handing off a console: Back up settings, factory-reset the console using guidance for its generation, then remove the device from your account.
- Freeing a Store slot: Unlink the device from your account’s device-management page; remember that a later download can make it count again.
- Closing the account: Verify that you are closing the correct Microsoft account, check subscriptions and purchases, and choose the reopening period deliberately.
