To extract a usable instrumental from a song, separate the finished mix into vocal and instrumental stems, listen for artifacts, then export and check the result. Audacity’s OpenVINO Music Separation plugin offers a local workflow on Windows and Linux: use 2-stem separation for a straightforward backing track, or 4-stem separation when you need drums, bass, vocals, and other accompaniment separately. Neither method guarantees a vocal-free result; the mix and source affect what remains.
Choose the separation method for the job
Vocal removal is source separation applied to a finished mix, not recovery of the original studio tracks. A separated instrumental is an estimate, and vocal reverb, backing harmonies, or stereo effects may remain audible.

Audacity’s support documentation says the 2-stem mode works well on most songs and that 4-stem mode can help extract drums and bass. That is not a guarantee of clean separation: the input determines the result. The OpenVINO instructions cited here cover Windows and Linux; check Audacity’s current release instructions for up-to-date installation details and menu labels. The legacy Vocal Reduction and Isolation effect is no longer shipped with Audacity from version 3.5.0 onward, so do not assume it is available in a current installation.
Prepare the best source file you have
- Use a lossless original if available. A less-compressed source gives the separation process more of the original audio to work with; lossy compression may add artifacts.
- Keep an untouched copy. Preserve the original file so you can retry separation or compare results without losing your starting point.
- Import the song into Audacity. Follow the current OpenVINO Music Separation instructions in Audacity’s support guide for plugin installation and access. The documented plugin route here is for Windows and Linux.
Separate the vocals from the accompaniment
- Open the OpenVINO Music Separation effect in Audacity, following the current support instructions for your version.
- Choose 2-stem separation for a vocal track plus an instrumental track when you want a backing track and do not need individual accompaniment parts.
- Choose 4-stem separation when you want vocals, drums, bass, and other accompaniment available separately for a more detailed edit or rebuild.
- Run the separation and identify the instrumental output. Keep the vocal and other stems in the project until you have checked the result; they can help you locate where an artifact originates.
Inspect the instrumental before using it
Listen to the instrumental from beginning to end, not just to a loud central section. Pay particular attention to:

If an artifact is audible and matters for your use, try another separation mode or a light repair. Center-channel reduction is a possible fallback for a centered vocal, but it is mix-dependent and can remove other centered material, including bass. Do not apply extra processing just because it is available: judge the instrumental in the context where you plan to use it.
Export for the intended destination
In Audacity, use File → Export audio. Choose the intended track or project mix, then set the format, channel count, sample rate, and any format-specific bitrate required by the destination. If a platform or recipient supplies delivery specifications, follow those rather than a general default.

Reopen the exported file and verify it
After exporting, open the file you created and check that the beginning and ending are intact, the stereo image and level are as expected, and playback works at the intended destination. Keep the Audacity project and original source if you may need to revise the separation or create another export.

Check usage rights before sharing or publishing
Separating a song does not establish that you have permission to publish, distribute, perform, or share the resulting instrumental. Obtain the rights required for the song and your intended use, and verify the licensing rules that apply to you. Legal requirements vary by jurisdiction and use; no universal permission follows from making a personal copy or a separated stem.
