To remove GPS metadata from a photo, use a documented location-removal control, then inspect the exact copy you plan to send. On iPhone or iPad, Photos can remove a saved location from an image; Apple also offers a separate control to omit location from a particular share. Those actions are not the same as preventing future camera captures, and none makes visible landmarks or other clues disappear.
First, know what kind of location information you are dealing with
A camera with location access can save coordinates in a photo or video’s metadata. A photo app may also display an estimated location based on landmarks or similarities to other geotagged images. And a person may infer a place from what the image shows. These are separate sources of location information, so removing embedded coordinates does not necessarily remove an app’s estimate or conceal visual clues.

Apple warns that people receiving shared photos and videos with location metadata may be able to access it and learn where the media was taken. Apple’s Personal Safety guide documents controls for removing a saved location, omitting location from a share, and stopping future camera location collection.

Choose the control that matches your goal
| Goal | Control | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Remove a location already saved with a photo | Remove the location in Photos | The selected library item; check the output file if you will export or send it |
| Share without location through Apple Photos | Turn off Location in the Share Sheet’s Options | That sharing flow, rather than a general change to every copy |
| Stop future iPhone or iPad camera captures from using location | Set Camera location access to Never in Location Services | Future camera captures while that setting is in effect |
Keep an untouched original if you want its location for organizing or archiving. Make a separate sharing copy when possible. Different apps and export routes can behave differently, so confirm the actual file that leaves your device rather than assuming a library change or share setting applies everywhere.

Remove a saved location in Apple Photos
On iPhone or iPad
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Tap More, then choose Adjust Info.
- Tap Adjust Location, then choose No Location.
This changes the selected item’s location information in Photos. It is distinct from turning off location just for an outgoing share, and it does not establish that every exported copy or third-party sharing route will be free of location metadata.
On Mac
In Photos, select the image and choose Image > Location > Hide Location. As with the iPhone and iPad control, inspect the copy you intend to share if you need to confirm what is in the file itself.

Omit location from one share or prevent future capture
For one iPhone or iPad Photos share
- Start sharing the photo from Photos.
- Tap Options in the Share Sheet.
- Turn off Location, then continue sharing.
This setting is for that Photos sharing flow. It is not proof that a separately exported original, a copy sent through another app, or a file transferred by another route has had its embedded metadata removed.

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera and select Never. This prevents Camera from using location for future captures while the setting remains in place; it does not remove location already saved in existing photos.

Verify the exact file before sharing
Use a metadata inspector on the exported or edited copy you will actually send or post. Examine all reported metadata groups and formats for GPS coordinates, GPS position, or other location fields. Do not check only an EXIF GPS section: ExifTool’s FAQ warns that GPS information can be stored in metadata formats other than EXIF.
- Create or export the sharing copy after applying the relevant removal control.
- Open that exact file in a metadata inspector.
- Review the reported metadata beyond the EXIF GPS group for coordinates or location fields.
- If you change the file again, inspect the new version rather than relying on the earlier check.
A map-free preview or an app display that says no location is available is not a complete metadata audit. Do not treat a file as verified unless you have inspected the actual output with a tool that reports its metadata.

Check app estimates and visual clues separately
Google Photos distinguishes location saved by a camera from an estimated location. It says estimates can be based on landmarks or similarities to other photos with location data, and its help page describes controls for editing or removing estimated locations. Google also says estimated locations are not shared, even when location details are included. That does not establish that changing an estimate removes embedded GPS from an exported original; inspect the file if embedded data is your concern. See Google Photos Help on location estimates and sharing.

Google says new albums, links, conversations, and other shared items do not include location details by default, except for partner sharing. That statement describes Google Photos sharing behavior, not every way to export, transfer, or share a file. Apple’s Share Sheet has its own Location option; do not assume one service’s settings govern another route.
What these steps do not establish
Removing GPS location is not the same as removing all metadata: photos can contain other information, and GPS data may be stored outside the EXIF GPS group. The controls above describe Apple Photos and Google Photos behavior; they are not universal menu paths for Windows, Android, or every photo app. If you use another system or a different transfer route, use its current documentation and verify the resulting file rather than assuming the Apple or Google controls apply.
