Remove Chrome Extension Adware in Windows 11: The Safe Cleanup Order

A safe Windows 11 cleanup order for suspicious Chrome extensions: remove the extension, check installed apps, reset Chrome, and scan if symptoms remain.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the suspicious extension first, check Windows 11 for software that may have installed or restored it, and reset Chrome only after that check. If browser changes, redirects, or ads persist, scan Windows with Windows Security. If the messages are only notification pop-ups from one site, revoke that site’s notification permission instead.

First, check whether it is adware or a site notification

Persistent pop-ups or tabs, an unexpected change to Chrome’s homepage or search engine, unfamiliar redirects, unwanted toolbars, and extensions that return after removal can indicate unwanted software. These are warning signs, not proof of a particular infection.

Site notifications are different from Chrome pop-up windows. If the messages appear as notification toasts and come from one site, check that site’s notification permission. If Chrome settings change, redirects appear, or an extension returns, investigate Windows software as well.

Remove the suspicious Chrome extension

  1. In Chrome, select More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Find the extension you do not trust, select Remove, and confirm. You can also use the extension’s toolbar menu and choose Remove from Chrome.
  3. Review the permissions of extensions you keep. An extension with access to read and change site data may affect browsing on sites it can access.

Google notes that a Windows application can install a Chrome extension, so removing the extension may not remove the software that installed it or keeps restoring it. Google Chrome Help: Install and manage extensions.

Check Windows 11 for software that may have installed it

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Look for unwanted or unrecognized software, especially apps installed around the time the symptoms began.
  3. Verify an unfamiliar app’s publisher and purpose before removing it; do not uninstall a program solely because its name is unfamiliar or the PC is managed.
  4. Select an app you have identified as unwanted and choose Uninstall.

Google’s guidance recommends removing unwanted programs that may affect Chrome: Remove unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware.

Reset Chrome after checking installed apps

  1. In Chrome, open More > Settings > Reset settings.
  2. Select Restore settings to their original defaults, then Reset settings.
  3. Review your extensions afterward and turn on only those you trust.

A reset can restore Chrome settings changed by unwanted software, but it does not establish that Windows is clean. If a repaired extension remains corrupted, Google advises running antivirus or anti-malware software and removing the software affecting Chrome. Google’s unwanted software guidance.

Scan Windows if symptoms persist or affect more than one site

Windows Security is built into Windows. Update its security intelligence before scanning, then open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and select Full scan. A full scan checks every file and program; a quick scan is a faster check. Microsoft Defender Offline restarts the PC and scans outside the normal Windows session. Save open files before starting it.

  • Use a full scan when the browser symptoms persist or you suspect unwanted software on the PC.
  • Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the concern remains after a full scan or persistent malware is suspected; the PC restarts to perform the scan.

Microsoft documents the available scan types in Stay protected with Windows Security and explains that Windows Security is built into Windows in Keep your computer safe with Windows Security.

Block site notifications if those are the only messages

If one site continues to send notification toasts after Chrome pop-ups are blocked, review its notification permission and block it if unwanted. Google notes that users may have subscribed to site notifications: Remove unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware.

If the extension or symptoms keep coming back

An extension that returns after removal, browser settings that change again, or redirects to unfamiliar pages point beyond a one-time extension cleanup. Check installed apps and scan Windows rather than repeatedly removing the extension alone. If malware signs continue, Google says resetting the computer or contacting its manufacturer may be necessary. Back up essential personal files carefully and use reputable support; do not trust phone numbers or download links shown in suspicious pop-ups.
