To remove Activation Lock, use the Apple Account linked to the device, have its previous owner remove it from their account, or submit Apple’s support request with proof of purchase. Erasing or resetting the device alone does not remove the lock.
Why Activation Lock remains after an erase
Activation Lock is an anti-theft feature associated with Find My. When Find My is set up, the device is linked to the owner’s Apple Account. Apple requires that account’s password—or a device passcode in supported on-device flows—to proceed with activation. A factory reset, restore, or remote erase does not prove ownership or bypass the lock. The device can continue to show an “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen until the linked owner removes Activation Lock.

Enter the Apple Account and password used to set up Find My when prompted during activation. If the device offers a passcode option, follow that on-screen flow. To remove the lock before selling or giving away a device, turn off Find My while signed in to the linked account. Apple says turning off Find My automatically removes Activation Lock.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Find My, then Find My [device].
- Turn off Find My and authenticate with the Apple Account password if prompted.
Mac
Open System Settings, select your Apple Account, and use the iCloud Find My Mac controls to turn off Find My Mac. Apple may require the account password. Mac support for Activation Lock depends on the device and its security requirements, so use Apple’s Mac-specific instructions rather than assuming iPhone steps apply.
Apple Watch
Unpair the watch from the iPhone it is paired with. Follow Apple’s current device instructions for the unpairing flow.

First identify the Apple Account used for Apple services; it may be an email address or phone number. Then use Apple’s account-recovery process. If you cannot recover the account and have proof of purchase, you can start an Activation Lock support request. Apple’s guidance describes a request process, not guaranteed approval.

If you bought or received the device
Ask the previous owner to enter their credentials during setup or remove the device from their Apple Account remotely. A used iPhone or iPad that still requests the former owner’s account is still linked to them; do not complete the purchase until the owner removes it and you can proceed through setup. There is no legitimate recipient-side bypass in Apple’s instructions. If the seller cannot or will not unlink the device, do not buy it.

If you sold or gave away the device and forgot to unlink it
The former owner can remove it remotely through Find My. This process erases the device’s contents, so use it only when that is appropriate.

- Select the device and erase it. If it is offline, the erase starts when it next connects; Apple says it sends an email after the erase is complete.
- After erasure, choose Remove This Device (or the corresponding remove option shown in Find My).
Removing the device from the account turns off Activation Lock so another person can activate it. Apple documents the process in Remove a device from Find My on iPhone and Remove a device from Find Devices on iCloud.com.

If the locked device is a Mac
Turning off Find My Mac disables Activation Lock. If the Mac is offline, its owner can sign in at iCloud.com/find and remove it. Apple also offers a support request for people with proof of purchase. Check Apple’s Activation Lock for Mac guidance for requirements specific to the model and its security features.
If a school or business owns the device
Contact the organization’s IT department or device manager. Organizational ownership controls are not something a consumer can independently remove through the usual personal-account steps.

What will not remove Activation Lock
- Factory reset or restore: Erasing the device does not remove the account link.
- Unlock software, exploit tools, or hardware: Apple’s documented routes require account authorization, action by the prior owner, or a support request. A third-party bypass is not a substitute for those steps.
- Proof of purchase by itself: It can support a request to Apple, but Apple does not promise that every request will be approved.
