Use a local MCP server over stdio when the client can launch it on the same machine and the integration is meant for that user or device. Choose a remote server over Streamable HTTP when it needs an independent lifecycle or a network-accessible endpoint. The decision hinges on how the server is launched, which transports the client supports, where the tools and data are, and how access is secured—not on a universal performance or safety advantage.
What “local” and “remote” mean for MCP
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) defines two standard transports: stdio and Streamable HTTP. With stdio, the client launches the server as a subprocess and exchanges protocol messages through standard input and output. With Streamable HTTP, the server runs independently and communicates through HTTP requests; server-sent events may be used for streaming. See the MCP transport specification, version 2025-11-25.

“Local” and “remote” describe where a server runs and how it can be reached; they are not rigid synonyms for protocol transports. A local server can use HTTP, for example, while the common local pattern is a client-launched stdio process. Describe the actual deployment when evaluating a setup.
How the options compare
| Question | Local stdio | Remote Streamable HTTP |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | Generally on the same machine as the client, which launches it as a subprocess. | Independently of the client, behind an HTTP endpoint reachable over a network. |
| What must the client support? | Launching and configuring the server process. | The HTTP transport and any authentication the endpoint requires. |
| What does reachability look like? | Typically limited to the local client and machine. | Network access to the server endpoint, subject to its access controls. |
| What is the main security focus? | Control the local process, its permissions, and access to local data. A local HTTP listener also needs safeguards. | Validate origins, authenticate access, and manage network exposure and credentials. |
| Where can it be hosted? | In the environment that launches the process. | On infrastructure that supports Streamable HTTP. Google Cloud documents Cloud Run hosting for Streamable HTTP MCP servers and says Cloud Run does not support stdio MCP servers; see Host MCP servers on Cloud Run. |
| Which is faster, cheaper, or more reliable? | No general ranking is established. Results depend on workload, network, host, configuration, credentials, and client implementation; measure the actual setup. | |
When to choose a local stdio server
Choose local stdio when the client can launch a server process and the integration is intended for that machine or user. It is a natural fit when the tools or data are available locally and do not need to be exposed as a network service.

The MCP specification says, “Clients SHOULD support stdio whenever possible.” This is normative specification language in the 2025-11-25 transport specification; it does not mean every client supports stdio. Check the client’s documented transport support and configuration requirements before choosing.
A local process is not automatically harmless or private: it may have access to files, credentials, or other resources allowed by its permissions. Give it only the access the integration needs.
When to choose a remote Streamable HTTP server
Choose remote Streamable HTTP when the server needs to run independently of a client process, be reached over a network, or use hosting that supports this transport. Confirm that the MCP client can connect using Streamable HTTP and handle the endpoint’s authentication requirements.

Remote hosting does not automatically make a server multi-user, scalable, or safer. Those properties depend on the server implementation, hosting configuration, access policy, and operations. Plan who can reach the endpoint, how credentials are issued and stored, and how the service is updated and monitored.

Cloud Run is one documented hosting example, not a universal MCP requirement. Google Cloud’s MCP servers overview also describes local servers as typically running on a user’s machine over standard input/output and remote servers as running on service infrastructure behind an HTTP endpoint.
Security requirements for HTTP servers
For Streamable HTTP, the MCP specification requires servers to validate the Origin header on incoming connections. If the header is present and invalid, the server must respond with HTTP 403. It recommends that locally running HTTP servers bind to 127.0.0.1 rather than 0.0.0.0, and implement proper authentication. These protections address DNS rebinding, which could let a hostile remote website interact with a local MCP server. Consult the specification’s HTTP transport guidance when implementing or assessing a server.

These safeguards matter even when the HTTP server is on the same computer as the client. A local HTTP listener is still a network listener; do not treat it as equivalent to a client-launched stdio process.
A practical decision checklist
- Pick local stdio if the client can launch the process, the integration is for a local user or machine, and the required tools or data are available there.
- Pick remote Streamable HTTP if the server needs an independent lifecycle or a network endpoint, and both the client and hosting platform support the transport and authentication setup.
- For local HTTP, apply the specification’s Origin validation, localhost-binding, and authentication guidance.
- For either choice, review process permissions or network access controls according to the resources the server can reach.
- For performance or cost decisions, compare measurements from the intended workload and deployment; the available sources do not establish a general winner.
Check client and platform compatibility first
Transport availability is a practical constraint, not an assumption. Google Cloud states that Cloud Run supports hosting Streamable HTTP MCP servers but not stdio MCP servers in its Cloud Run hosting guidance. For a remote endpoint, authentication may also be part of the connection flow; OpenAI’s MCP servers documentation describes remote servers and possible OAuth token needs. Verify the current requirements for the particular client and service before deployment.
