Depending on the provider, “remote” may also mean you can turn forwarding on or off while away from the phone or location where the service is based.
What remote call forwarding means
AT&T Business defines remote call forwarding as a feature that automatically sends a call from an old number to a new one, or from one specified number to another. Verizon’s local-service definition similarly describes calls dialed to an equipped number being forwarded automatically to another dialable number. The caller dials the original number; the telephone service routes the call to the selected destination.

This can keep a published home or business number reachable after a move, or send calls to another answering destination. The carrier or phone system determines how the feature is provisioned, controlled, charged, and limited. Traditional carrier forwarding and modern cloud phone systems may implement routing differently; the available provider documentation does not establish one universal technical design. The phrase can describe the forwarding service itself, or the ability to manage forwarding from somewhere other than the base phone. Those are related but distinct ideas. For example, AT&T’s local home phone instructions let eligible customers use a special access number and PIN to change forwarding while away from home. That is a provider-specific remote-control method, not a universal procedure or necessarily the name another carrier gives its service.

How to set up or turn off forwarding
Use your provider’s instructions for the exact phone service and account. As one example, AT&T’s published local home phone workflow is:
Rank #2

- Enhanced productivity features: Full-duplex speakerphone for natural conversations, extra-large display, caller ID/call waiting, 100-name phonebook, 32 speed dials, cordless headset support, intercom, and customizable music-on-hold via 2.5mm jack.
- Call the special access number assigned for the service.
- Enter the home telephone number and PIN when prompted.
- Enter the service activation code, then the number where calls should be forwarded, and follow the voice prompts.
- To deactivate forwarding, call the same access number, enter the home number and PIN, then enter the deactivation code and follow the prompts.
The AT&T instructions refer to entering a 7- or 10-digit home telephone number. Do not assume that the access number, codes, or sequence will work with another carrier, a wireless line, or a business phone system. Check the current instructions for your service before changing call routing.
How it differs from other call-forwarding options
Remote call forwarding does not by itself tell you which calls are forwarded or how you control the feature. Providers may offer several routing modes, each with different triggers. Verizon One Talk, for example, documents the following business forwarding modes; names and controls vary by provider.

Depending on the system, forwarding may be controlled through an access number and PIN, a handset or desk phone, a mobile app, a web portal, or provider-managed settings. Verizon One Talk: Features
What to check before relying on it
- Destination eligibility: Confirm that the provider allows the number or geography you want to forward to. A destination may need to be a dialable number permitted by your plan.
- Forwarded-call charges: The originating number and the destination can create a chargeable call leg. Verizon’s local-service definition makes the customer responsible for applicable usage charges between the remote call forwarding number and the terminating number. Your rates and plan terms may differ, so confirm them with your provider.
- Capacity and service terms: Verizon’s definition says its described RCF service forwards one call at a time and does not guarantee transmission quality on remotely forwarded calls. These are terms for that particular service, not general limits that apply to every carrier.
- Business mobility features: Some cloud business phone services combine forwarding with the ability to take business-number calls on other devices. Comcast Business describes voice-mobility features, while Verizon One Talk documents configuration through an app, desk phone, or portal. Availability and included features depend on the provider and account. Comcast Business: Voice Mobility
Is remote call forwarding right for you?
It is useful when you need calls to a particular number to reach another answering destination, such as after changing location or when directing a business line elsewhere. If you only need calls redirected under specific conditions, ask about busy, no-answer, selective, or scheduled routing rather than assuming basic forwarding will provide those rules. Before enabling it, verify the available controls, permitted destinations, forwarded-leg charges, and any call-handling limits for your exact service.
