For a reliable live-stream mix, set levels at the microphone or audio device first, route each source into OBS deliberately, monitor both the source and the OBS mix, and rehearse a recording before going live. Keep a USB-microphone setup simple unless you need an interface for XLR or instrument inputs, extra routing, direct monitoring, or loopback audio.
Choose a signal path that fits your stream
Start with the sources viewers need to hear: typically a microphone, plus application or game audio, music, alerts, or a DAW return. Keep the microphone and other important sources separate in OBS when you need to adjust their levels independently.
| Workflow | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| USB microphone connected directly to the computer | One speaker and a small number of audio sources. | Simple to set up, with fewer separate hardware inputs and routing options. |
| XLR microphone connected to a USB audio interface | You need an XLR or instrument input, interface monitoring, or more routing control. | Adds hardware, cables, and gain controls. An XLR microphone does not automatically improve every voice or room. |
| DAW audio routed to OBS using interface loopback | Your music-production software needs to join the stream mix alongside a separately captured microphone. | Convenient when the interface and software support the virtual route; the configuration depends on them. |
| Two-interface routing | The PreSonus Studio One workflow on Windows when loopback is unavailable. | Requires extra hardware and a pair of TRS cables; this is a specific vendor workflow, not a universal requirement. |
Consider how many inputs you need, whether you need direct monitoring, whether a DAW return requires loopback, and which operating system and software you use. An interface can offer multiple inputs and outputs and direct monitoring; those features matter when your routing needs justify the added setup. See Ableton’s guide to setting up an audio interface.
Connect each source in OBS
Microphone or interface input
- Connect the microphone to the computer, or connect it to the intended physical input on your audio interface.
- In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source and select the microphone or interface input. Focusrite’s Focusrite-interface setup guide describes this source-selection workflow.
- If one microphone is connected to a single Focusrite interface input, open Advanced Audio Properties and check Mono for that source so the voice is centered rather than confined to one side.
DAW audio and loopback
If the stream needs audio from a DAW such as Studio One, route its output separately from the microphone where possible. PreSonus documents a Windows workflow that sends a virtual stereo output from Studio One to OBS while capturing the microphone as its own source. If the interface lacks loopback, that guide describes routing the interface’s main outputs into a secondary interface with a pair of TRS cables. The details depend on the devices and software in use; follow the PreSonus Studio One and OBS instructions for that particular setup.

Set levels at the source and monitor the mix
Set the microphone or device level before relying on OBS faders. OBS’s practical guidance is: “Always start at the device in question.” (OBS Audio Mixer Guide, dated 2026-04-03.) If the device has a headphone or monitor output, listen there first; then listen to the signal reaching OBS through its audio monitoring.
Keep the final digital mix below 0 dBFS. OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital ceiling; audio at or above it in the final stream or recording can distort. A lower level at the OBS mixer does not fix distortion that has already happened at the microphone or another device, which is why checking the source matters. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details (dated 2022-02-13).

- Ultra-low noise, high headroom digital mixer with wireless remote control
- FLOW App for Bluetooth remote control from iOS/Android mobile phones or tablets
- 60 mm channel faders and master rotary control with LED collar
- EZ-Gain function analyzes the signals in your application and automatically sets the gain for optimum headroom
- Two Midas microphone preamps with 48 V phantom power and programmable gain
- Speak at your ordinary level and watch the OBS meter while adjusting the input device’s gain.
- Test the loudest speech, music, or other sound you expect during the stream. Listen at the device output when available and through OBS monitoring.
- Make a short OBS recording with the normal mix and loudest expected moments, then listen back before going live.
Monitoring headphones are useful for checking what is actually reaching the stream, rather than assuming that the source sounds correct because it sounds fine in the room.
Add filters only to solve a specific problem
OBS filters can help shape a mix, but they are not a substitute for correct source levels and routing. Add one change at a time, then test normal and quiet speech so processing does not make the voice harder to understand.

- 10 channel mixer with USB and SPX digital effects
- Featuring studio grade discrete class A D PRE amps with inverted Darlington circuit providing fat, natural sounding bass and smooth, soaring highs
- 3 band EQ and high pass filters give you maximum control and eliminate unwanted noise, resulting in a cleaner mix
- 1 knob compressors allow easy control resulting in livelier guitars, punchier bass lines, a tighter snare and a cleaner vocal sound
- MG Series mixers feature a rugged, impact resistant, powder coated metal chassis; Equivalent input noise 128 dBu, residual output noise 102 dBu
- Compressor: Can reduce louder peaks. OBS says it is typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain option can duck desktop audio under a microphone. See the OBS Compressor Filter guide.
- Expander: Can reduce low-level sound more gradually than a gate. Set its threshold cautiously: an overly high threshold can cut off quiet words. See the OBS Expander Filter guide.
These are functions, not universal presets. A setting that suits one voice, room, or source may not suit another.
Rehearse the complete stream mix
Before going live, listen through the whole mix at an ordinary listening volume. Check the microphone, application or game audio, music, alerts, and any DAW return. Confirm that a single-mic interface input is centered when appropriate, and check that a source is not coming in twice through both a direct route and desktop capture.

- Do music, game sounds, or alerts overwhelm speech at any point?
- Does every intended source reach OBS, and are unwanted sources absent?

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Voice is only in the left or right channel | A single interface input is being treated as stereo. | For a single Focusrite mic input, select the source in OBS Advanced Audio Properties and check Mono. |
| Audio distorts even though OBS’s fader is turned down | The signal may already be clipping at the device or input stage. | Lower the originating device’s gain, then monitor and record a test through OBS; keep the final digital mix below 0 dBFS. |
| Quiet words disappear after processing | An expander threshold may be too aggressive. | Lower the threshold or adjust the filter, then test quiet and ordinary speech again. |
| Desktop or DAW sound is missing from OBS | The relevant source may not be selected or the audio may not be routed to OBS. | Check the OBS input source and, for a DAW workflow, confirm the interface supports the intended loopback route or follow the documented two-interface method. |
| Music or game audio sounds doubled | The same signal may enter through a direct source and desktop capture. | Mute one route at a time during a test recording to identify and remove the duplicate path. |
