Yes, fragrance technology can make some scent ingredients without extracting them from the plant traditionally used to supply them. Fermentation, enzymes and other biological processes offer potential alternatives—but the available evidence does not show that these substitutions have measurably reduced pressure on endangered plants across the fragrance industry.
How biotechnology can make fragrance ingredients
In fragrance production, biotechnology uses living organisms or enzymes to produce or transform useful compounds. Microbes can ferment a feedstock into a target molecule; bioconversion and biocatalysis use biological processes to make or modify ingredients. Givaudan describes fermentation and biocatalysis in its ingredient development, while dsm-firmenich describes sugar fermentation, bioconversion and advanced distillation as ways to make ingredients from renewable carbon (Givaudan; dsm-firmenich).

“Remaking” a scent does not necessarily mean recreating an entire plant extract. A perfumer may instead use a molecule or blend that plays a similar olfactive role. The companies describe biological production techniques and ingredients, but the cited material does not establish a one-to-one replacement for the complete scent profile of a named endangered plant.

Givaudan says its fragrance ingredient Ambrofix is made by fermenting sustainably sourced sugar cane. The company says producing one kilogram uses 100 times less land than the traditional production method. That is Givaudan’s own comparison; its page does not establish that the figure is independently audited or representative of other ingredients and processes (Givaudan).

Why plant sourcing can matter for conservation
Some aromatic and medicinal plant supply chains face risks from overharvesting, habitat loss, climate change, and unregulated or illegal international trade. CITES identifies these as pressures on medicinal and aromatic plants, but that general warning does not mean every plant-derived fragrance ingredient is harmful or every species is threatened (CITES).
Agarwood and what trade controls mean
Agarwood illustrates the distinction between a regulated trade and a blanket ban. CITES materials connect agarwood, used in fragrance, with the genera Aquilaria and Gyrinops, which are listed in Appendix II. Appendix II regulates international trade; it does not mean trade is universally prohibited or that every listed species is currently endangered. Rules can depend on the species, listing annotations, origin and product, so a specific trade claim needs to be checked against the applicable CITES listing (CITES Appendices; CITES agarwood information).

CITES also identifies materials such as Brazilian rosewood and sandalwood in its fragrance-related material. Their presence in that context is not, on its own, enough to determine the current trade rules for a particular species or product; those details must be verified at species level.

A substitute is a plausible conservation tool, not proof of a conservation outcome. To show that a particular ingredient is easing pressure on a wild plant, evidence would need to connect its use to reduced wild harvesting or improved species outcomes. A fair environmental comparison would also examine the alternative’s feedstock and its land, energy and water use across the production process.

For a plant-derived ingredient and a biotech alternative, useful questions include:
- Is the plant wild harvested, cultivated, or no longer harvested for the ingredient?
- What feedstock does the biological process use, and does producing it compete for land or other resources?
- Are land, energy and water impacts compared using the same lifecycle boundaries?
- Does the alternative meet the required scent performance and quality standards, and can it be supplied reliably?
- What is known about biodegradability and other relevant environmental impacts?
- Is sourcing traceable, and is there species-level evidence of conservation effects as well as information about impacts on harvesting communities and livelihoods?
Manufacturers discuss renewable carbon, resource efficiency, supply reliability and quality, but the cited company pages do not provide an independent, standardized lifecycle comparison across ingredients. Nor do the cited sources document an industry-wide drop in wild harvesting or a population recovery attributable to fragrance biotechnology.

What would demonstrate that fragrance technology is helping?
A convincing case would pair transparent sourcing information with a comparable lifecycle assessment and evidence that using a specific alternative has reduced wild harvest or improved the status of the relevant species. Givaudan says it sources more than 10,000 natural raw materials globally, a company-reported figure that underscores the scale of its sourcing but does not itself establish conservation outcomes (Givaudan sustainability).
