A reliable home security setup depends more on process than on hardware: a provider you have checked, a written contract you can cancel if the terms are not what you were told, cameras that are hard to take over, and smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms placed where they will actually wake you. This guide follows U.S. federal consumer and safety guidance from the Federal Trade Commission’s buying guide on home security systems (December 2023), the FTC’s camera guidance, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) alarm pages. It does not rank brands, verify how any product performs, or quote prices. Local rules vary, and where that matters the article says so.
What a system should cover and how to compare offers
The FTC describes home security systems that may provide intrusion warnings, video surveillance, medical-emergency notification, smoke or fire detection, and monitoring for carbon monoxide or water. Few homes need every one of these. Start with the risks your property actually has, then ask each provider to answer the same questions so the offers can be compared on equal terms.

| Comparison point | What to find out | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capabilities | Which sensors, video, medical alert, smoke or fire, CO, or water monitoring are included | You should pay only for coverage that matches your risks |
| Installation | Whether the system is wired or not, who installs it, and whether the work is subcontracted | It shows who is accountable if an installation fails |
| Monitoring and response | The monitoring fee, billing cadence, and the full sequence after an alarm, including whether the provider contacts you before notifying authorities and what happens if it cannot reach you | This determines how quickly help is dispatched and how false alarms are handled |
| Power loss | What backup battery protection exists during a power outage | A system that goes dark in an outage offers little protection when it is most needed |
| Contract length and exit | Contract length, early termination penalties, and moving provisions | These set what it costs to leave, including if you move |
| Repairs and warranty | Who pays for repairs, and the warranty’s coverage and duration | Repair responsibility is a common source of unexpected bills |
| Local requirements | Whether your police or fire department requires registration, charges fees, or imposes false-alarm fines | These rules are set locally, so the provider’s answer is not the final word |
Vetting a provider before you sign
Follow these steps in order. Each one filters out a provider before you commit time or money to the next.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Let the provider learn about the home first. The FTC’s guidance states: “Reputable companies won’t try to sell you anything before learning about your needs and the layout of your home.” Ask for a written estimate only after that conversation has taken place.
- Check references and complaints. Search the provider’s name alongside terms such as “complaint” and “scam,” and ask for customer references you can call.
- Verify contractor licensing. Confirm the installer’s license with the appropriate state agency rather than relying on a license number printed on a brochure.
- Ask your local police and fire departments about registration. Find out whether the system must be registered, whether fees apply, and whether false-alarm fines are charged. The answers vary by jurisdiction; the FTC does not establish a single national rule.
- Confirm who installs and who monitors. The company you buy from may subcontract either job. Get the names of the installer and the monitoring center in writing.
Reading the contract and resisting pressure
What the written package should contain
Under the FTC’s guidance, the contract package should include the installation price, the monitoring fee and billing cadence, the contract period, any discounts, the written warranty, the owner’s manual, and the cancellation information. Compare these against the sales pitch line by line. Any promise a salesperson made, such as a discount or a moving clause, belongs in the dated contract. If it is not written, treat it as not offered.

Free equipment and time pressure
The FTC warns that a purportedly free alarm can come with a long-term, expensive monitoring contract. The same guidance advises resisting urgency and fear tactics. Two checks help:
- If a salesperson claims your neighborhood has a crime problem, check that claim with your local police.
- If someone says your current security company has changed or is sending an upgrade representative, call that company directly using the number on your existing contract, not the number the salesperson gives you.
Cancellation rights
The FTC states that its Cooling-Off Rule gives consumers three business days to cancel certain contracts signed in the home or at another location that is not the seller’s permanent place of business. The rule does not cover every sale, so check whether your contract qualifies. The FTC also notes that state law may provide additional protections. Read the contract and the rules that apply where you live before the cancellation window closes.

Securing connected cameras
A camera adds remote video monitoring, but it is also an internet-connected device that carries a private video feed. The FTC’s camera guidance recommends the following steps, in roughly the order to take them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Check the built-in security features. Look for encryption covering account information, livestreams, and stored video.
- Replace default credentials. Use a strong, unique password for each device and account.
- Turn on two-factor authentication wherever the camera or app offers it.
- Install updates for the camera and its app as they become available.
- Secure the router. Keep its software current, enable its firewall, and use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption. A separate network for cameras is another option.
- Decide whether remote viewing is needed, and avoid pointing cameras at sensitive private areas.

Ongoing device hygiene and selling a smart home
The FTC’s connected-device guidance adds two habits. Disable features you do not use, and check IP-camera access logs for unfamiliar addresses or access times. Its advice on securing internet-connected devices at home covers the broader set of devices in the house.
When you buy or sell a home with connected devices, inventory every device, remove the previous owner’s administrative access, delete personal information, reset the devices, and review the privacy, warranty, and support policies that apply to them. The FTC’s 2018 consumer alert on buying or selling a “smart” home sets out this checklist.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Life-safety alarms are part of a home security plan even when they are not part of a monitored system. The USFA and CPSC guidance agrees on the core placement rules, with one difference in detail noted below.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Alarm | Where to install | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke alarm | Inside every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement (USFA, “Smoke Alarms”; CPSC guidance is consistent) | Test monthly. Replace batteries annually (CPSC). Replace the alarm 10 years from its manufacture date (USFA). |
| CO alarm | On each level of the home and outside sleeping areas (CPSC, “CO Alarms”) | Test monthly. Replace batteries annually (CPSC). Replacement interval: not stated in the cited CPSC guidance; follow the manufacturer’s instructions. |
The USFA recommends interconnected smoke alarms. In its words: “Choose interconnected smoke alarms so that when one sounds, they all sound.” CPSC says to follow each alarm’s instructions and to verify local code requirements, which may be stricter than the national guidance.

Check safety devices against current warnings
Before buying any smoke or CO detector, search the CPSC’s warnings and recalls. On August 20, 2026, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using TJTFJS combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors because they could fail to alert consumers to hazardous smoke and fire. The agency urged owners to dispose of them and to install working smoke alarms and CO detectors. If you own one, act on the CPSC’s instructions now rather than waiting for a replacement to arrive. The full notice is available on the CPSC warning page.
