Check entitlement in the resolver’s backend path before it reads or changes protected data. Then test the resolver with an unentitled caller and assert the app’s real denial behavior or that the protected operation was never reached. The exact entitlement source, denial response, and test harness depend on your app; use its existing policy rather than guessing.
Put the authorization check at the resolver boundary
Forge resolvers are backend functions called from UI Kit or Custom UI. The resolver callback receives a request with payload and context, as documented in the Forge resolver reference.

Resolve entitlement from trusted resolver-side context and the app’s actual entitlement policy. Do not treat client payload, UI visibility, or browser-modifiable context as proof that a caller is entitled. Make the decision before any protected read, write, external call, or other side effect; otherwise a denial response may arrive after the sensitive operation has already happened.
Use the right context for authorization
For Custom UI resolvers, Atlassian says resolver context parameters are secure, unalterable, and valid for authorization. The same app context security guidance warns not to use contextual information from the bridge getContext API for authorization because browser code can modify it. This distinction is specifically documented for Custom UI resolver context; apply the guidance to the context your resolver actually receives.

Do not assume Forge license context equals your feature policy
The Forge resolver reference documents accountId, accountType, and an optional license field. That field is present only for paid apps in production; it is undefined for free apps, apps not listed on the Marketplace, and development or staging environments. If your product entitlement comes from a separate app policy or service, check that source. Even when license context is relevant, account for its documented absence rather than treating it as universally available.
Make the denial observable without performing protected work
Choose an assertion that expresses your app’s real contract. If the resolver returns a documented denial response or throws the expected authorization error, assert that result. Also verify that the protected dependency was not called when that is the clearest way to prove the operation did not happen. These checks are complementary: a denial response alone does not prove that a read or side effect was prevented first.

Keep the test focused on the security property: with an unentitled request, the call is denied and protected behavior does not occur. Preserve a permitted-caller test if the suite already covers the success path, so a change to the gate does not silently block valid use.

Where practical, invoke the resolver through the project’s actual registered-handler harness. An Atlassian Developer Community example calls a handler with a functionKey and context, using a shape like await handler({call: {functionKey: 'getText'}, context: req}). If the registered handler is difficult to exercise, export the resolver’s business logic and test that function directly, as the community example also suggests. Prefer the entry point when it gives a practical way to verify the authorization path; whichever level you choose, ensure the tested function includes the gate rather than bypassing it.
Build a regression test that fails if the gate disappears
- Find the app’s entitlement source and denial contract. Read the existing resolver and authorization code to identify how entitlement is determined, what an unentitled request should receive, and which operation must be protected.
- Identify the protected dependency. Use the real service or a test double for the read, write, or external call that must not occur before authorization.
- Construct an unentitled request. Provide the trusted resolver-side context and any request payload needed to reach the protected code. Do not simulate entitlement solely by changing client-controlled fields.
- Invoke the resolver path under test. Use the registered handler where practical, or call the exported logic that contains the authorization check.
- Assert denial and non-execution. Check the app’s expected error or response, and assert that the protected operation was not called when the test harness can observe it.
- Check that the test is gate-sensitive. The assertion should fail if the authorization check is removed or bypassed: without the gate, the request would reach protected work or fail to produce the expected denial. Do not claim the regression is proven merely because the test passes once.
Adapt setup, mocks, and assertion syntax to the project’s actual test framework and denial contract. The sources do not define a universal Forge denial response or a project-independent test runner.

Keep types out of the security boundary
Type-safe resolver definitions can catch some interface mistakes during development, but they are not runtime authorization. Atlassian’s resolver reference warns that type overrides such as any can prevent errors from being caught. Validate sensitive data and enforce entitlement in executable resolver logic regardless of the request’s TypeScript types.
