To install a refrigerator water filter, first match the replacement cartridge to your refrigerator’s model, then follow that model’s instructions to remove and fit it. Check for leaks, flush the manufacturer-specified amount of water, and reset the filter indicator if your refrigerator has one. The release mechanism, water-shutoff requirement and flush volume vary by model, so there is no universal installation sequence.
Find a filter that fits your refrigerator
Check the refrigerator’s model number and the designation on the existing cartridge, then confirm compatibility in the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s filter guide. Bosch recommends searching by refrigerator model, while Whirlpool and GE provide model- or filter-specific instructions. A cartridge that looks similar is not necessarily compatible.

Before installing, check the replacement packaging for the exact model compatibility and any manufacturer approval or certification it states. Do not rely on a generic search result alone to establish fit.

Replace the filter step by step
- Consult the model instructions. Find the manual or manufacturer guidance for your refrigerator. Confirm the filter location, removal motion, water-supply instructions, installation method and flushing amount.
- Stop dispensing water. Follow the manual on whether to shut off the refrigerator’s water supply. Instructions differ: GE’s described procedure does not require shutting it off, while Samsung Canada’s procedure does. Fisher & Paykel likewise says shutoff is unnecessary for the procedures covered on its page. These directions are not interchangeable across models.
- Locate and remove the old cartridge. The filter may be inside the refrigerator or behind a base grille. Use the specified turn, pull, button or cap release. Keep a towel nearby for drips; do not force a filter that resists removal.
- Prepare and fit the replacement. Remove packaging and any protective covers or seals as directed. Align the compatible cartridge with the housing, then insert, push or turn it according to the manual until it is seated. Do not overtighten it.
- Restore water and inspect the installation. If you shut off the supply, turn it back on as the manual directs. Check the filter housing and dispenser for drips.
- Flush the new filter. Dispense and discard the amount specified for your refrigerator. Flush guidance is model-specific: Bosch’s general guide says 2–3 gallons or the manufacturer’s specified amount; Whirlpool specifies four gallons for the filter procedure described on its page; LG gives approximately 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters) for its described procedure; and Fisher & Paykel gives 8 L (2 gal) for the models covered by its guidance. These are not universal amounts.
- Reset the filter indicator if applicable. Use the model-specific control-panel or manual instructions. The reset sequence varies by refrigerator.
Why water shutoff and flushing instructions vary
Manufacturers do not give one shared procedure for every refrigerator. The water connection and cartridge design affect how replacement is done, so follow the instructions for your exact model rather than borrowing a step from another brand’s guide. The same applies to flushing: use the manual’s quantity if it gives one, rather than treating another manufacturer’s figure as a default.

Replacement timing is also model-dependent. GE says its refrigerators generally need a new filter every six months or usually after 170–200 gallons, depending on the model. Bosch gives about six months as a general interval. Check your own manual for the applicable schedule.

If the new filter will not fit or water flow is weak
- The cartridge will not turn or seat: Stop. Recheck the model compatibility and alignment, and follow the manual’s release and installation method. Applying force can damage the housing or cartridge.
- The filter leaks: Check that the cartridge is fully seated and that any covers or seals were handled as instructed. Inspect the housing for drips; if leakage persists, consult the model-specific support guidance.
- Water flow is weak after replacement: Confirm the filter is seated correctly and complete the specified flush. If flow remains weak, use the refrigerator’s manual or manufacturer support to troubleshoot that model.
