A compatible wireless home-theater system can eliminate speaker-wire runs, but it will not eliminate every cable. For people trying to avoid visible wires or gain more freedom in speaker placement, wireless audio is worth considering—provided the system supports the channels and formats they need, its components work together, and outlets are available where the speakers will go. The title’s first-person reasons are not established, so this guide treats hiding wires and flexible placement as two possible motivations, not as a verified account of the author’s experience.
What wireless audio removes—and what it leaves behind
Some wireless home-theater technologies transmit audio to speakers without speaker-wire connections. WiSA describes its Home Theater technology this way; that claim applies to its technology, not to every product marketed as wireless. Check the exact transmitter and speaker set before buying. WiSA’s technology overview explains its approach.

Wireless does not mean cable-free. Speakers and audio hubs still need power, so a power cord and accessible outlet may remain at each device. The television may also stay connected to an AVR or soundbar over HDMI eARC. If the goal is a cleaner-looking room, plan the power and HDMI runs as carefully as the speaker-wire routes you hope to remove.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Speaker-wire runs can be awkward to conceal across a room, around doorways, or along walls. A compatible wireless speaker link can remove those audio runs, which may simplify placement where routing wire would be inconvenient. It does not, by itself, solve power-cord visibility or the need to connect other components.

Using the advanced “Customize” option, you can adjust audio details to suit your personal taste, ensuring every sound is tuned exactly how you prefer.
Before choosing a system, map each speaker’s likely position and identify nearby outlets. If a speaker location has no practical power access, wireless audio may trade one routing problem for another. Also identify which connections remain between the TV, hub, receiver, and speakers; “wireless” usually describes a particular audio link rather than the entire installation.
Reason 2: You want more flexibility in speaker placement
Removing a speaker-wire route can make it easier to consider locations that would otherwise require long runs or concealed cabling. That flexibility is useful only within the limits of the system: the speakers must be compatible with its transmitter or hub, and each powered component still needs electricity. Manufacturer claims about easier installation or placement are not the same as independent evidence that one system will fit every room better.

Check audio formats, channels, and synchronization
Formats and channel count
Do not assume that a wireless connection supports every format used by a source, TV, or receiver. WiSA Technologies states that its Home Theater system transmits up to eight channels of uncompressed 24-bit audio at 48 or 96 kHz. Those are vendor specifications, not independently verified comparative results. Confirm that the specific system supports the formats and channel layout you plan to use.

Sony separately lists support up to 192 kHz/24-bit, 37 Mbit/s audio bandwidth, and uncompressed 5.1/7.1 audio in its eARC support article. These are capability statements; the format you actually receive depends on the connected equipment and signal path.

- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Latency and synchronization
WiSA states a fixed latency of 2.6 ms at 96 kHz and 5.2 ms at 48 kHz for its Home Theater technology. Treat these as the vendor’s specifications rather than a promise about every wireless system or every complete setup. When comparing products, look for stated latency and synchronization behavior, then confirm compatibility across the source, transmitter, and speakers.
Keep HDMI eARC compatibility in view
If the TV sends audio to an AVR or soundbar over eARC, both devices must support eARC for that connection to provide eARC functionality, Sony notes. Check the TV and audio-system specifications, not just the cable. Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC; choose a cable that also meets the system’s video requirements. HDMI’s guidance says to consider video capability and official cable labels when selecting a cable. A pricier cable is not automatically an audio upgrade if a compliant cable already meets the system’s needs.

The HDMI Licensing Administrator’s July 23, 2025 blog states, “The best way to get maximum audio quality is with wired connectivity rather than wireless.” That is the organization’s position, not a neutral independent test comparing complete systems. It is a useful reminder to weigh a wired eARC path’s broad format support against the convenience of removing speaker-wire runs, rather than assuming wireless is always equivalent or inferior.

- Define the cable run you want to remove. Is it the speaker wire, or are you expecting the TV, hub, and speakers to need no cables at all?
- Verify formats and channels. Match the system’s documented support to your source, TV, receiver, and desired speaker layout.
- Check the complete wireless set. Confirm that the transmitter or hub and each speaker are compatible; do not infer compatibility from a wireless label alone.
- Review latency and sync information. Look for system-specific claims and avoid treating one technology’s figures as universal.
- Plan power access. Mark the outlets needed at speaker and hub locations, including how visible their power cords will be.
- Confirm the TV-to-audio connection. If you rely on eARC, verify support on both devices and select an HDMI cable appropriate to the video and eARC requirements.
- Compare installation effort honestly. Account for power and HDMI routing as well as any speaker wires removed.
When wireless is a sensible fit
Wireless audio is a reasonable option when difficult or visible speaker-wire runs are the main problem, the chosen transmitter-speaker combination is compatible, outlets are available at planned locations, and its audio support matches the rest of the system. If the priority is maximum audio quality through a wired path, or the room makes power access just as troublesome as speaker wiring, retaining a wired setup may be the better fit. The available manufacturer specifications and guidance do not establish a universal winner or an independent performance comparison between wired and wireless systems.
