They are related, but they are not the same. Measure a release build first, then target its biggest contributors—code, resources, or bundled assets—and measure again after each change.
What does “app size” mean?
App size can refer to the compressed download a store delivers, a device-specific package produced for a user, or the app’s footprint after installation. A store may tailor delivery to a device, so a single build’s size does not necessarily describe what every user downloads or stores. Keep the measurement type attached to every comparison.

These distinctions matter when evaluating an optimization: a smaller download does not automatically mean an equally smaller installed footprint. Use platform and store reports to compare like with like.

Measure before changing the app
Begin with a release build, not a development build. Find out whether code, images, other resources, or bundled data account for most of the size. That gives you a target and a baseline for checking whether a change helped.

Android
Google Play Console provides app-size measurement and comparison tools. Google also documents using bundletool to estimate app size before upload. The estimate is similar to, but not identical to, Play Console’s calculation, so treat it as an early check rather than the final store measurement.
Apple platforms
When exporting an app for distribution, Xcode can generate an app thinning size report. Review the thinned size for the device configurations you support, rather than assuming every device receives the same set of assets. Apple explains how to measure app size and create an app thinning size report.

Remove unnecessary content and reduce binary overhead
Once you know what dominates the build, remove content the app does not use. Check project and target membership for obsolete files, unused resources, and unnecessary variants. Also review release build settings and the compiled binaries.

Keeping data and assets in files can reduce the binary and allow App Store Connect to compress the app more efficiently. This is a reason to examine how data is packaged—not a guarantee of a particular reduction. See Apple’s app-size guidance.

On Android, code-minimization tools such as R8 or ProGuard are options to investigate when code is a significant contributor. Shrinking or obfuscating code can affect behavior and compatibility, so test the release build thoroughly after changing these settings. Google Play Console’s app-size guidance also covers size monitoring and modular delivery.
Optimize assets and deliver only what users need
Images and other bundled resources can take up a substantial share of an app. Remove unused assets and variants, optimize the assets you keep, and avoid packaging content that users do not need at launch when the platform offers a suitable delivery mechanism.
Apple asset catalogs and app thinning
Asset catalogs let Xcode and the App Store select assets intended for a user’s device and optimize how they are delivered. Organize device-specific resources in catalogs, keep only needed variants, then inspect the exported app thinning report to verify the result. Apple describes asset catalogs and app thinning and size reports.

An Android App Bundle contains compiled code and resources. When you publish one through Google Play, Play generates and serves APKs tailored to each user’s device configuration, rather than requiring every user to download one universal APK. Google’s Android App Bundle documentation describes this delivery model.

Google’s cited guidance sets a 200 MB compressed download restriction for apps published with Android App Bundles; larger sizes may be possible with Play Feature Delivery and Play Asset Delivery. This is the limit described in that Google Play bundle guidance, not a universal claim about every Android distribution route. Check the current rules before publishing, since platform policies and delivery options can change. See Google’s current Android App Bundle guidance.
Feature delivery can defer optional parts of an app until they are needed, while asset delivery can provide larger asset sets dynamically. These approaches add delivery and testing considerations: verify that deferred content loads correctly, that the app handles unavailable or delayed downloads, and that the experience works across supported devices.

Do not assume Apple on-demand resources are a stable default for new projects. Apple says the feature is deprecated on Apple platforms as of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. Whether an existing project or distribution path can use a particular mechanism depends on its platform and deployment targets; check Apple’s current app-size guidance before designing around it.
Verify the release and keep the right comparison
- Record a baseline. Note the release build, target platforms and devices, and whether the figure is a compressed download, a store-delivered variant, or installed size.
- Use the platform’s report. For Android, compare bundletool’s estimate with Play Console’s measurement. For Apple platforms, export the app thinning size report and examine the relevant device configurations.
- Change the largest contributors first. Remove unused files, reconsider how bundled data is packaged, optimize assets, and evaluate code minimization or modular delivery where appropriate.
- Test the app after each significant change. Check that resources, features, and downloaded content still work on supported configurations.
- Build and measure again. Compare the same type of size measurement against the baseline, then use the store or platform report as the final check.
Do not assume that a technique produces a fixed percentage of savings. The result depends on what the app contains, how it is built, and what each device receives. Likewise, check current store policies instead of relying on a limit read at an earlier date.
