Yes, a Redmi Note 12 can run a custom Android 14 or Android 15 ROM—but only when the build supports your exact device codename. The retail name covers different phones: the 4G non-NFC model is usually tapas, the 4G NFC model is topaz, and the relevant global/EEA 5G model is commonly sunstone. Their firmware, kernels, recoveries and partition layouts are not interchangeable. Unlocking Xiaomi’s bootloader also wipes the phone, reduces some verified-boot protections and can affect service, banking, DRM and contactless payments.
Use this guide as a safe framework. The selected ROM maintainer’s current instructions always override generic commands.
First, identify the exact Redmi Note 12
Do not download a ROM from the words “Redmi Note 12” alone. Confirm the codename reported by the phone and match it character-for-character with the ROM maintainer’s target.

Firmware records list these targets separately: tapas, topaz and sunstone. Redmi Note 12 Pro, Pro 5G, Pro+, Turbo and other similarly named models are outside this guide.

Check in Android
- Open Settings → About phone and record the exact model number, region/firmware suffix and Android version.
- Note whether the phone has NFC and whether it is a global, EEA, India, China or another regional edition.
- With USB debugging enabled, run:

Check in fastboot
fastboot getvar product
fastboot getvar allfastboot getvar all can expose identifying and configuration data. Inspect it locally rather than pasting the complete output into a public forum.
Stop if the codename is unknown, the maintainer names another target, or the phone is a Pro-series or carrier variant not explicitly listed.
Is an Android 14 or Android 15 custom ROM actually available?
Official Xiaomi Android 15 HyperOS firmware is not evidence that a third-party ROM such as LineageOS, crDroid, Evolution X or PixelOS supports the phone. Conversely, a ROM labeled Android 14 may require a particular MIUI/HyperOS firmware base. Follow the ROM guide’s stated firmware requirement, not the Android version currently shown in Settings.

If you cannot verify a current download, installation guide, recent release and known issue list for your codename, the accurate statement is “No currently verified maintained build found”—not “no ROM exists.” Xiaomi’s regional stock firmware listings are useful for identifying Android and region differences: tapas and sunstone.

Understand the risks before unlocking
- Bootloader unlocking normally performs a full factory reset.
- An unlocked device displays a boot warning and has weaker verified-boot guarantees. Android documents the state transition and data deletion at Verified Boot device states and the boot flow.
- Camera quality, NFC, fingerprint, VoLTE/VoWiFi, encryption, DRM, Play Integrity and banking applications can vary by build.
- Xiaomi warns that unlocking or flashing can cause data loss, boot failure, reduced security and service or warranty implications: unlocking warning and flashing warning. Legal warranty rights depend on your jurisdiction.
Prepare the computer, backups and files
Hardware checklist
- Computer with a reliable USB port and a known-good cable.
- Battery at least 60% charged and a stable internet connection.
- A second device for reading instructions if the phone becomes unusable.
- Official stock fastboot firmware for the exact codename and region.

Install Google’s official Android SDK Platform-Tools from developer.android.com/tools/releases/platform-tools, then verify:

adb version
fastboot --versionWindows may require a correctly installed Xiaomi/fastboot driver visible in Device Manager. Linux users may need udev rules and USB permissions. Do not use random “one-click unlock” tools or paid remote services.
From the exact maintainer guide, obtain:
- Device-specific recovery or boot/recovery image.
- The exact ROM ZIP or fastboot package.
- Required firmware package.
- Optional Google Apps (GApps) matching Android version and ARM64 architecture.
- Optional Magisk only if you specifically need root.
- SHA-256 checksums where supplied.
Back up photos, videos, documents, contacts, authenticator codes and app-specific data such as WhatsApp. Preserve any recovery backup on a computer. Do not erase modem, persist, EFS or calibration partitions unless the device developer explicitly requires a documented method.
Unlock Xiaomi’s bootloader through the official process
Xiaomi’s eligibility, account limits, regional rules and waiting period change. Current support pages describe account/device binding and official Xiaomi Community or Mi Unlock procedures; some users are asked to wait more than seven days, while other regional guidance mentions 15 days. There is no universal number. See Xiaomi’s support FAQ and global support guidance.

- Back up everything; unlocking will normally wipe the phone.
- Sign in on the phone with the Xiaomi Account you will use in Mi Unlock. Insert a valid SIM if required for your region.
- Open Settings → About phone and tap OS version/MIUI version repeatedly to enable Developer options.
- Open Settings → Additional settings → Developer options; enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging.
- Open Mi Unlock status or Device unlock status and bind the same Xiaomi Account to the device.
- Install Xiaomi’s official Mi Unlock tool on the computer and sign in with that account.
- Power off the phone, then hold Volume Down + Power to enter fastboot mode.
- Connect the phone and follow Mi Unlock. If Xiaomi imposes a waiting period, leave the account and device bound and return after the displayed interval.
- After a successful unlock, allow the phone to erase and reboot. Complete initial setup before continuing.
Verify the state diagnostically with:
fastboot getvar unlockedFastboot output varies, so do not assume one exact response.
Install recovery, firmware and the ROM
The following is a framework, not a universal partition recipe. Modern Xiaomi devices may use dynamic partitions, recovery-as-boot or vendor_boot. The maintainer’s current instructions determine the image name, partition and sequence.

1. Confirm connections

fastboot getvar productThe first command should show an authorized device after you accept USB debugging. The product must match your verified codename.
2. Boot or flash the specified recovery
A guide may use one of these forms:
fastboot boot recovery.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.imgDo not choose between them by guesswork. If recovery is temporarily booted, use its Reboot to recovery option when instructed so the stock system does not restore the original recovery.
3. Format or wipe exactly as documented
“Factory reset,” “Format Data,” fastboot -w and wiping selected partitions are different operations. A typical recovery format is:
- Boot the specified recovery.
- Select Wipe → Format Data.
- Type the confirmation word.
- Reboot recovery if the ROM guide requires it.
- Transfer or sideload the package.
Never wipe arbitrary modem, persist or EFS partitions.
4. Install the ROM package
Recovery ZIP installation may use ADB sideload:
adb sideload rom-package.zipA progress percentage that appears to pause can be normal because the computer and recovery report progress differently; follow the selected recovery’s documentation. Alternatively, copy the ZIP over MTP, choose Install in recovery, or use the maintainer’s fastboot package such as:

5. Add Google Apps only when supported
- If GApps are included, install nothing else.
- If optional, flash the maintainer-approved ARM64 package immediately after the ROM and before first boot.
- If the ROM says GApps are unsupported, do not force an unrelated package.
- MicroG or a de-Googled setup follows a separate compatibility path.
Do not install GApps after first boot unless the ROM specifically documents that sequence.
6. First boot
Keep the phone on power. The first boot can take several minutes; do not repeatedly force-restart it. If it returns to recovery, check whether installation and Format Data completed. For a persistent bootloop, return to the ROM’s troubleshooting instructions rather than flashing random images.

The name is insufficient. Recheck the codename and stop if it differs.

Recovery disappears
The phone may have booted the stock system, the image may be wrong, or the device may require recovery-as-boot or vendor_boot handling. Return to the exact recovery guide.
No mobile service
Check regional firmware, SIM provisioning, APN, carrier VoLTE/VoWiFi support and whether modem-related data was preserved. Do not erase modem or persist as a shortcut.
Encryption or password loop
This commonly indicates that Format Data was missed or an incompatible recovery was used. Back up anything recoverable, then follow the ROM’s exact format procedure.
Bootloop after GApps
Check Android version, ARM64 architecture, package variant, whether the ROM already includes GApps and whether the package had to be installed before first boot.

Try another cable and USB port, confirm USB debugging authorization in Android, reinstall the correct Windows driver or fix Linux udev permissions, then retest adb devices or fastboot devices.
Banking or streaming apps fail
An unlocked bootloader, custom ROM, modified boot image or failed Play Integrity can trigger checks. No workaround is permanent or guaranteed.
Return to stock HyperOS
- Download the official fastboot ROM for the exact codename and region; verify its checksum when available.
- Use Xiaomi Mi Flash or the method recommended for that package.
- Select the clean-flash option and allow the process to finish.
- Do not choose clean all and lock unless the package is unquestionably the correct official regional firmware.
- Never relock after flashing an incompatible region or unofficial package.
Xiaomi documents official reflashing and relocking in its support material, but an incorrect relock can hard-brick the phone: support FAQ.
How to choose among verified ROMs
- Exact target: separate
tapas,topazandsunstone. - Maintenance: recent releases, security patches and an active issue tracker or maintainer thread.
- Documentation: explicit firmware, recovery, Format Data, installation and rollback instructions.
- Functionality: published results for camera, NFC, fingerprint, VoLTE/VoWiFi, Bluetooth and DRM.
- Updates: understand whether OTA works or every update is manual.
- Google model: identify included, optional or unsupported GApps.
- Security: prefer signed releases, checksums, transparent source and an active maintainer.
Custom ROMs can provide newer Android, less Xiaomi software, more control and longer community support. They also bring data loss, boot warnings, possible feature regressions, manual updates and greater recovery risk. If no maintained build is verified for your codename, staying on official HyperOS is safer than adapting another model’s package.
