Redis vs Varnish: Which Cache Should You Run on Your VPS?

Redis caches application data; Varnish caches shareable HTTP responses. This guide compares their layers, memory and storage behavior, invalidation, persistence, failure modes, and when running both on one VPS makes sense.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: run Varnish when you need to cache complete, shareable HTTP responses in front of your web server. Run Redis when your application must cache database results, objects, sessions, counters, queues, or other key-addressed data. A busy site often uses both: Varnish serves eligible pages at the HTTP tier, while Redis accelerates application work behind it.

The two products are not interchangeable versions of the same cache. They sit at different layers, use different cache keys and invalidation rules, and fail in different ways. Choosing by workload instead of by product popularity prevents stale personalized pages, uncontrolled RAM growth, and a cache that adds complexity without reducing origin load.

Redis and Varnish solve different caching problems

Varnish is a reverse caching proxy between clients and an origin server. It understands HTTP requests and responses and can return a complete cached response without contacting the origin on a hit. Varnish Software describes it as “a reverse caching proxy: a proxy server that speaks HTTP that you put in front of your web servers.” See the official Varnish explanation.

Redis is an in-memory key/value data store that application code calls explicitly. The application decides which key to read, what value to store, how long it should live, and when it should be invalidated. A Redis value might be a serialized product record, a rendered fragment, a query result, a login session, a rate-limit counter, or a job-related data structure. Redis does not automatically know that a browser requested a particular URL.

Decision point Redis Varnish
Cache key Application-defined keys such as object IDs, query signatures, session IDs, or counters Derived from the HTTP request, URL, host, method, headers, cookies, and VCL rules
Placement Called by application code, usually near the database or service layer In the request path between clients and the origin web server
Cached data shape Objects, strings, hashes, lists, sets, query results, sessions, and other application values Complete HTTP response objects, including headers and body
Invalidation Delete or update keys, use TTLs, or apply an eviction policy Purge or ban objects and honor HTTP freshness and privacy directives
Workload scope Shared application data, including values that are not web pages Responses that many clients can safely share
Persistence Optional RDB snapshots or AOF logging; durability changes resource usage and restart behavior Cache storage is normally rebuildable from the origin
Configuration burden Memory ceiling, eviction policy, TTL strategy, persistence, and client behavior HTTP headers, cookies, authorization, VCL routing, purge rules, and storage sizing
Typical failure effect Application falls back to its data source if misses and errors are handled Requests must be routed to the origin when an object is absent or the proxy is unavailable

When Varnish is the better choice

Public pages and cacheable API responses

Start with Varnish when most requests are for public, read-heavy HTML or HTTP API responses and the same response can be delivered to many visitors. A cache hit can satisfy the request without a PHP process, application worker, database query, or upstream API call. This is especially useful for home pages, category pages, documentation, news articles, and APIs whose responses are identical for a defined audience.

Varnish follows HTTP cache semantics. Directives such as s-maxage, max-age, private, no-cache, no-store, and stale-while-revalidate communicate whether a response may be shared and how long it remains fresh. The Varnish HTTP caching documentation explains these rules. Correct origin headers give Varnish a policy it can enforce consistently; incorrect headers can expose private data or produce stale content.

Requests that need explicit bypass rules

Do not cache personalized traffic by default. Cookies, an Authorization header, user-specific pricing, account pages, shopping carts, and mutation methods such as POST, PUT, PATCH, or DELETE generally require bypass or carefully defined variation. If two users can receive different bodies for the same URL, Varnish needs a safe cache-key variation or must pass the request to the origin.

VCL is Varnish’s domain-specific configuration language. It can choose backends, inspect and alter requests, modify responses, route traffic, and define cache behavior. Varnish translates VCL to C and loads the resulting shared object, which provides extensive control but makes code review, testing, and observability important. The VCL reference is the authoritative guide.

Storage and concurrency considerations

Varnish storage backends cache full objects. A cache containing many large responses, or serving many large objects concurrently, therefore needs proportionally more storage. Size the storage for the working set and expected concurrency rather than for a headline capacity number. Monitor hit rate, evictions, object sizes, and origin load after deployment. The storage-backend guide describes the performance characteristics and full-object behavior.

When Redis is the better choice

Application data rather than whole pages

Choose Redis when the application needs to cache data it combines, filters, or transforms before producing a response. Typical candidates include database query results, computed objects, permission lookups, expensive API replies, rendered fragments, sessions, counters, and shared state consumed by multiple application workers. Redis can also support queues and coordination patterns that are not HTTP caching at all.

The application owns the key namespace and serialization format. A useful key should identify both the data and the inputs that affect it—for example, a product identifier plus a locale or a query signature plus a tenant identifier. The application must also decide whether stale data is acceptable, whether a write should delete related keys, and what happens when Redis is unavailable.

Set a deliberate memory ceiling

Redis documentation defines maxmemory as the limit that triggers eviction. An unset limit allows Redis to continue allocating memory, potentially consuming the VPS and starving the operating system or other services. Set a ceiling based on the memory budget left after the operating system, web server, application workers, database, and monitoring processes are accounted for; then leave additional headroom for transient allocations and buffers.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Redis recommends reserving room for replication and AOF buffers because those buffers are not included in the eviction comparison. Monitor resident memory, fragmentation, evictions, rejected writes, and the VPS’s overall memory pressure rather than treating the configured limit as the entire safe budget.

Match the eviction policy to the data

Policy family Behavior Use when
noeviction New writes are refused when the limit is reached Data loss through eviction is unacceptable and the application can handle write failures
allkeys-lru Evicts the least recently used key from all keys A general-purpose cache where recency predicts future use
allkeys-lfu Evicts the least frequently used key from all keys Popularity is more useful than recency
volatile-lru Evicts the least recently used key only among keys with an expiration Non-expiring keys must be protected and cache entries have TTLs
volatile-lfu Evicts the least frequently used expiring key TTL-bearing entries should compete by frequency
volatile-random Chooses a random key from the expiring-key set Access patterns do not justify recency or frequency tracking
volatile-ttl Prefers expiring keys with the shortest remaining TTL Near-expiry data should be discarded first

These policies are documented in Redis’s key-eviction reference. A policy is not a substitute for correct TTLs: if a value must never outlive a source change, invalidate it when that source changes.

Persistence is a separate decision from caching

Redis offers RDB snapshots and AOF logging. Persistence can preserve sessions or valuable derived state across a restart, but it introduces disk I/O, buffering, rewrite work, fork-related memory pressure, and recovery time. The Redis persistence documentation details the trade-offs.

For a disposable cache, disabling persistence can simplify the failure model: after a restart, the application repopulates entries from the source of truth. For sessions or expensive derived data that must survive restarts, evaluate the required durability, disk capacity, backup plan, and recovery objective instead of enabling persistence automatically.

Client-side caching

Redis client-side caching can keep frequently used replies in application memory, reducing round trips and database work. It also creates another copy and another invalidation problem. Invalidation messages or bounded TTLs are needed to prevent clients from serving stale values. Redis documents the protocol and invalidation requirements in its client-side caching reference.

Can you run Redis and Varnish together?

Yes. A layered design is rational when the site has both shareable HTTP responses and expensive application data lookups.

  1. A client requests a URL.
  2. Varnish checks its HTTP cache key and freshness rules. A valid hit returns the complete response immediately.
  3. On a miss, Varnish forwards the request to the application origin.
  4. The application reads query results, objects, sessions, or counters from Redis before using the database or another upstream service.
  5. The origin returns a response with headers that tell Varnish whether and for how long the response may be shared.

Give each layer clear ownership. Varnish owns URL-level response objects and purge paths; Redis owns application keys and their TTLs. A content update may require both a Redis-key invalidation and a Varnish purge, but those operations should be explicit rather than accidental. Document what happens when either cache is unavailable: the origin should remain the source of truth, and the application should distinguish a Redis miss from a Redis outage.

Choosing for common VPS workloads

Your workload Recommended starting point Reason
Mostly public, read-heavy HTML Varnish in front of the origin Many visitors can share complete responses
Public HTTP API with stable responses Varnish, provided HTTP freshness and variation are correct Response caching can remove repeated origin requests
Database or service query results Redis The application must cache data before assembling the response
Sessions, counters, queues, or shared state Redis These are key-addressed values, not public pages
Whole-page delivery plus expensive backend work Varnish and Redis together Each tier removes a different class of work
Highly personalized traffic Redis first; add Varnish only with explicit variation and bypass rules Uncontrolled response sharing is unsafe
Small VPS with limited RAM One bounded cache, chosen by the bottleneck Running Redis without a ceiling can exhaust the host; Varnish still needs storage for full objects

How to plan a Redis deployment on a VPS

Antihost VPS offers Linux VPS instances with full root access, NVMe storage, and 1 to 16 vCPUs with 2 to 64 GB RAM in the USA East, Netherlands, and Ukraine. Because the VPS is self-managed, you install and tune Redis and Varnish yourself.

  1. List the data. Separate disposable cache entries from sessions, locks, counters, and other values whose loss has different consequences.
  2. Estimate the working set. Include serialized value sizes, key names, data-structure overhead, expected concurrency, and growth. Measure production-like samples rather than assuming every entry has the same size.
  3. Reserve host headroom. Subtract the operating system, web and application processes, database, monitoring, replication or AOF buffers, and operational margin from total VPS RAM.
  4. Set maxmemory. Treat it as an explicit safety boundary, not as permission to consume all remaining RAM.
  5. Select eviction and TTL rules. Use an eviction policy that matches whether recency, frequency, or expiration determines value. Ensure the application handles misses and write refusals.
  6. Choose persistence deliberately. Disable it for a truly disposable cache, or configure and monitor RDB/AOF behavior when restart survival matters.
  7. Instrument the result. Alert on memory pressure, evictions, rejected writes, hit and miss rates, latency, persistence lag, and restart recovery.

How to plan Varnish on a VPS

  1. Classify responses. Mark public, shareable responses separately from private, authenticated, cookie-dependent, and mutating requests.
  2. Define HTTP policy at the origin. Use Cache-Control directives such as s-maxage, max-age, private, no-cache, no-store, and stale-while-revalidate to express freshness and sharing rules.
  3. Write VCL rules. Select the correct backend, bypass unsafe requests, normalize only values that are safe to normalize, and define purge or ban behavior. Keep the configuration in version control and review changes like application code.
  4. Size storage for objects and concurrency. Large bodies and simultaneous large objects consume storage quickly because Varnish caches complete objects.
  5. Observe before tuning. Track hit ratio, misses, evictions, object sizes, backend response time, and origin load. A high hit rate is not useful if the cached response is wrong or the origin remains the bottleneck.
  6. Test invalidation. Publish content, change permissions, clear cookies, and exercise authenticated paths to verify that old or private responses cannot be served to the wrong client.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Using Redis as if it automatically cached pages

Redis does not intercept HTTP requests. Add application code that stores and retrieves page fragments or data, or place an HTTP cache such as Varnish in front of the origin when complete responses are shareable.

Putting personalized pages in a shared Varnish cache

Cookies and authorization can make a response user-specific. Bypass those requests or vary the cache key only when the variation is complete and safe. Verify with multiple user identities, not just an anonymous browser.

Letting Redis grow until the VPS swaps or kills processes

An unlimited Redis process can consume host memory. Set maxmemory, reserve room for buffers and other services, choose an eviction policy, and alert on evictions and rejected writes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming persistence is free

RDB and AOF improve restart survival but add disk, CPU, fork, buffering, rewrite, and recovery considerations. Decide whether the cached data actually needs durability.

Purging one layer but not the other

After a source update, stale data can remain in Redis while Varnish has a fresh response, or the reverse. Define ownership, TTLs, and purge paths for both layers and test the sequence.

Bottom line: choose by the layer you need to accelerate

Choose Varnish for shared HTTP responses and Redis for application-owned data. Varnish is usually the first addition for a public, read-heavy site whose origin is rendering the same pages repeatedly. Redis is usually the first addition when database queries, computed objects, sessions, counters, or shared state dominate latency. If both problems exist, run both with bounded memory, explicit freshness and invalidation rules, and monitoring that shows whether each layer is actually reducing origin work.
