For a root-level .htaccess, redirect an exact public /register request with a temporary redirect while you test:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^register/?$ / [R=302,L]
In per-directory context Apache removes the directory prefix before matching, so the rule sees register, not /register. Replace both the path and destination with the values used by your site.

How the rule matches the registration URL
The example assumes that:
- the file is in the document root;
- the public registration URL is
/register(with an optional trailing slash); - the desired destination is the site root,
/; and - the request should be redirected rather than denied or handled according to login state.
Apache’s per-directory rewrite documentation states that “In .htaccess context, the directory prefix is stripped.” A leading slash in a per-directory RewriteRule pattern therefore does not match.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^register/?$ / [R=302,L]
^ and $ prevent unrelated paths from matching, while /? permits either /register or /register/. The R=302 flag sends a temporary redirect; L stops processing further rules in the current pass.

When the .htaccess file is not in the document root
If the file is inside a subdirectory, Apache strips that directory’s URL prefix as well. Write the rule pattern relative to the directory containing the file, still without a leading slash. Confirm the real URL and directory mapping before changing the pattern.
When you need to test the complete original path, use REQUEST_URI in a condition. Keep the condition narrow so it cannot intercept other routes:
Rank #2
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/register/?$
RewriteRule ^ / [R=302,L]
The condition above is an example for a confirmed root-level /register path. If the application is mounted below a prefix, change the condition and destination to that actual deployment.
Redirect, deny, or authorize?
| Requirement | Approach | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Send visitors elsewhere | RewriteRule with R=302 during testing |
The browser URL changes. |
| Keep a confirmed redirect permanently | Change to R=301 only after validation |
Browsers and intermediaries may cache a 301. |
| Prevent access without navigation | Use an access-control response, not a redirect | A redirect is not authorization. |
| Decide based on login or account state | Application-level authorization | A generic path rule cannot reliably evaluate session policy. |
Requirements before the rule can work
Editing the file is not sufficient unless the server permits per-directory rewriting. Apache’s documentation identifies these prerequisites:
Rank #3
mod_rewritemust be available and enabled.- The host configuration must allow the directives, commonly with
AllowOverride FileInfoorAllowOverride All. - Per-directory rewrites require
Options FollowSymLinksorOptions SymLinksIfOwnerMatch.
On managed hosting, only the provider can change these settings. Check the installed Apache version and host policy; the linked per-directory page is trunk documentation, while the rewrite introduction and flags references describe Apache HTTP Server 2.4.
Safe testing and permanent status codes
- Save a backup of the current
.htaccess. - Use
R=302and test both/registerand/register/. - Confirm that the destination does not itself match the redirect rule.
- Check the response with a browser or an HTTP client and verify there is only the intended redirect.
- After the behavior is correct, change to
R=301only if the redirect is genuinely permanent.
Apache recommends temporary redirects while debugging. A browser can cache an incorrect 301, making a fixed rule appear broken until its cached redirect is cleared or bypassed.

Troubleshooting a rule that has no effect
Verify placement and pattern
Make sure the file governs the requested URL and that the pattern has no leading slash. A root request normally reaches a root-level file as register.

Confirm mod_rewrite, the required AllowOverride setting, and the symlink-related option with the host administrator. A syntax-correct rule cannot override a host policy that disables it.
Best Value
Use rewrite tracing only where supported
Where you control server logging, Apache documents trace logging such as:
LogLevel alert rewrite:trace3
Enable this only for diagnosis and only where server configuration permits it. Trace logging creates substantial output and can affect performance; do not leave it enabled in production.
Avoiding redirect loops and open redirects
Ensure the destination (/ in the example) does not satisfy the same condition. Also use a fixed, trusted destination or strictly validate any value used to construct one. Apache warns in its mod_rewrite introduction that building a redirect URL from unvalidated user input can let an attacker send visitors to a malicious site while the link appears to originate from your domain.
For flag behavior and the distinction between temporary and permanent redirects, see Apache’s RewriteRule flags documentation.
