Reddit is planning another access restriction for Old Reddit: once it rolls out, ordinary logged-in users will need to have used the legacy interface within the previous six months. Logged-in moderators are exempt from that recency check. Reddit has not announced a shutdown, and the exact start date and definition of qualifying use have not been specified.
What is changing on Old Reddit?
The planned six-month activity check adds a new layer to an existing login requirement. Reddit said in an August 5, 2026 infrastructure update that, in the short term, users would still have to be logged in to access Old Reddit. On September 30, Ars Technica reported that Reddit would also restrict access for ordinary logged-in users who had not used Old Reddit in the preceding six months. Reddit described implementation as expected “in the next few months,” without giving a calendar date or technical details. Reddit’s August announcement; Ars Technica’s September report.

Is Reddit shutting down Old Reddit?
No shutdown date has been announced. Reddit’s public statements describe plans to change how Old Reddit is accessed while preserving it for people who rely on it. Spokesperson Rosa Kim told Ars Technica: “This change is about limiting unauthenticated access and reducing automated abuse—not removing Old Reddit for people and moderators who rely on it.” Reddit has not promised that the legacy interface will remain indefinitely, so the announcement is not a guarantee about its long-term future. Reddit says the changes are intended to reduce abusive scraping and automated traffic, while protecting the platform and keeping Old Reddit available to genuine users and moderators. Its August 5 announcement said it planned changes involving the legacy desktop interface as part of broader infrastructure and moderation-tool modernization. Reddit also said it would work on migrating critical bots and moderator workflows to its modern stack. That is a broad commitment, not a published migration schedule for every bot or tool. - Pairs fantastically well with Versa Key Tags
- New Improved Design

The company has not published a quantified reduction in scraping attributable to either the login wall or the planned six-month rule. Its stated rationale should therefore be understood as Reddit’s explanation, not as an independently measured result.
What should Old Reddit users do?
- If you are an ordinary user: stay signed in when using Old Reddit and watch for an official notice about when the recency rule begins. If you rely on the interface, use it periodically once the rule is in force; Reddit has not explained whether a particular page visit or action will qualify.
- If you moderate a community: the reported exception applies to logged-in moderators, regardless of when they last used Old Reddit. Reddit says it plans to move critical moderator workflows to its modern stack, but has not provided tool-by-tool dates.
- If you maintain a bot or app: Reddit’s August post describes continued limited public API access, gradual restrictions on new requests, and a transition toward its Developer Platform for third-party apps. It also announced a $1 million app migration program. These platform-wide details do not establish a deadline for every API client or bot. Reddit’s announcement.
How is the RSS change different?
RSS is a separate change, not part of the Old Reddit eligibility rule. Ars Technica reported that Reddit plans to end RSS support on November 13, 2026. According to the report, moderators using RSS for their communities should move to supported alternatives; Reddit reportedly said there would be no replacement for feeds outside communities a person moderates. The report does not establish whether those details will change, so users dependent on RSS should check for current guidance near the cutoff date. Ars Technica.
