There is no universal winner. Choose between Red Pocket Mobile and Tello by matching the exact high-speed data allowance you need with the network that performs best at your address. On the plans advertised on October 13, 2026, Red Pocket gives more data at $10, Tello is cheaper at 10 GB and 50 GB, and both list 20 GB for $20.
Red Pocket is the more flexible choice if one of three major U.S. networks works substantially better where you live. Tello can be the better value when your target is 10 GB or 50 GB and its partner network has reliable coverage. Check address-level coverage, confirm that your phone is unlocked and VoLTE-compatible, and compare the final checkout total before moving a number.

Red Pocket vs. Tello at a glance
The figures below are advertised monthly prices and high-speed data allowances shown on the carriers’ pages on October 13, 2026. Taxes and some provider fees can change the amount charged to your payment method. After the included high-speed allowance, relevant plans use reduced speeds rather than delivering the same performance indefinitely.

That table does not include every possible add-on or promotion. It compares the regularly displayed tiers that answer the most common low-cost-plan questions. A plan with a lower sticker price can still produce a higher bill after taxes, administrative charges, or recovery fees, so use each carrier’s checkout page for the final comparison.

Which carrier is cheaper for the data you actually use?
If your budget is about $10
Red Pocket’s $10 Essentials tier lists 3 GB of high-speed data, while Tello’s $10 Starter tier lists 2 GB. If your monthly usage stays below roughly 2 GB, either plan may work; between 2 GB and 3 GB, Red Pocket gives you more stated headroom before reduced speeds. Neither allowance is intended for sustained video streaming, frequent hotspot use, or large app updates away from Wi-Fi.
Check your phone’s monthly cellular total before choosing. On an iPhone, look under Settings and Cellular; on Android, the wording varies by manufacturer but is usually under Settings, Network and internet, or Connections, followed by Data usage. Reset the usage counter on your billing date if you want a clean comparison for the next cycle.
If you need around 10 GB
Tello lists 10 GB for $15. Red Pocket’s current tiers cited here show $10 for 3 GB, $20 for 20 GB, and $30 for 50 GB, so a reader needing 8–12 GB should compare the cost of stepping up to Red Pocket’s 20 GB tier against Tello’s 10 GB option. Paying for unused capacity is wasteful, but repeatedly hitting a lower allowance can be more frustrating than buying a modest cushion.

If you need 20 GB
At 20 GB, both carriers advertise $20 per month. The network available at your address, the phone’s compatibility, and the final bill therefore matter more than the headline price. Examine whether your use is mostly on Wi-Fi, whether you need hotspot data, and whether one carrier’s activation process supports your phone’s SIM or eSIM configuration.
If you need 50 GB
Tello lists 50 GB for $25, while Red Pocket lists 50 GB for $30. Tello has the lower advertised price at this allowance. Red Pocket’s Premium tier is still worth considering if its available network performs better locally or if its stated 10 GB hotspot allowance is important to you.

Do not treat “unlimited” as unlimited high-speed service
Marketing labels can hide the practical limit. The plans compared here specify a high-speed allowance, then reduced speeds after that amount. At throttled speeds, navigation and messaging may remain usable, while high-resolution video, cloud backups, and large downloads can become slow. Read the plan’s data-management language and hotspot terms instead of relying on the word “unlimited.”
Network choice can outweigh a small price difference
Red Pocket’s three-network model
Red Pocket says its service is available on three major U.S. networks. That gives a new customer a way to select the network with the strongest local performance, subject to the network and plan options presented during signup. The cited information does not establish that customers can freely switch networks at will after activation, so choose carefully before ordering a SIM or eSIM.

Indoor signal, terrain, building materials, congestion, supported frequency bands, and the phone model can all change the result. Tello’s partner network
Tello’s help material describes service through a partner network but does not publicly identify that partner on the page reviewed for this comparison. Do not infer that Tello will perform the same way as Red Pocket in your neighborhood. Use Tello’s own coverage and compatibility check with your address and phone before transferring a number.
A practical coverage test
- Write down the addresses where you need dependable service and whether indoor coverage matters.
- Run each carrier’s address-level coverage check, selecting the exact network option when Red Pocket presents more than one.
- Enter your phone model or IMEI rather than assuming an unlocked device supports every band.
- Ask people who use the relevant network in the same buildings about congestion at the times you need service; a broad map cannot show every local dead zone.
When coverage is close, use price and data to decide. When one option has a clearly stronger signal at home or work, paying a few dollars more can be less expensive than dealing with dropped calls, unusable data, or an early switch.

Will your current phone work?
Both carriers support bring-your-own-phone enrollment, but compatibility is not automatic. Red Pocket says the phone must be unlocked and support VoLTE because the underlying networks have stopped supporting 3G. Tello likewise provides compatibility checks. A phone that is merely described as “unlocked” may still lack the radio bands or software support required by the selected network.

Check before ordering
- Confirm the phone is paid off and unlocked. A carrier lock can prevent activation even when the handset is otherwise technically compatible. Contact the previous carrier if its unlock policy has not been completed.
- Find the IMEI. Dial
*#06#, or open the device’s About or General information screen. If the phone has separate IMEIs for physical SIM and eSIM, use the one that matches the activation method. - Run the carrier’s IMEI checker. Do this on Red Pocket and Tello separately. On Red Pocket, also check compatibility for the particular network option you intend to use.
- Verify VoLTE and LTE/5G band support. A 3G-only handset is not a safe choice for new activation. International models can omit bands used by U.S. networks even when their model name looks identical.
- Check SIM or eSIM support. Confirm that your phone accepts the physical SIM size supplied or supports the eSIM process shown during signup.
If a checker rejects the phone, do not port your number yet. Resolve the device issue or choose a different compatible handset first; otherwise you can end up without working service while the port is being investigated.
How to switch without losing your number
Number transfers are easiest when the old line remains active until the new carrier confirms completion. The exact screens can change, but the sequence below avoids the most common failures.
- Collect account details from the current carrier. You may need the account number, transfer PIN or port-out PIN, billing ZIP code, and the name exactly as it appears on the account.
- Choose the plan and network. Select the data tier that matches your measured usage. If ordering Red Pocket, select the available underlying network after checking coverage; do not assume it can be changed later.
- Order and activate the SIM or eSIM. Follow the activation instructions supplied by the carrier. Keep the old SIM installed until the transfer status says the number has moved, unless the instructions specifically require another sequence.
- Submit the port request carefully. A mismatched account number, PIN, address, or ZIP code is a frequent cause of delay. Copy details directly from the old carrier’s account rather than guessing.
- Wait for confirmation. Calls and texts may behave inconsistently during the handoff. Do not cancel the old account manually; a completed port normally closes the old line, while cancellation first can make recovery difficult.
- Test the new line. Make an outbound call, receive a call, send and receive SMS and MMS, open a web page on cellular data, and test voicemail. If you use an iPhone, check iMessage and FaceTime activation; on Android, verify RCS if you rely on it.
- Check emergency and account information. Confirm that the device shows the intended carrier, update the emergency address where applicable, and save the new account number and support contact.
Fees and the bill you will actually pay
Advertised prices are not always the complete monthly charge. Tello’s broadband facts information says provider monthly fees are included, with cost recovery of up to 30 cents, while government taxes vary by location. Red Pocket lists plan-specific administrative and recovery fees, and taxes also vary by location.
For a fair comparison, place the same type of plan in each carrier’s cart, enter the same service address, and compare the final recurring amount. Distinguish recurring charges from one-time activation, SIM, or shipping charges. A price captured in an article or an older screenshot may omit taxes, fees, promotional conditions, or an add-on that is no longer included.

Why older comparisons may show different prices
A January 2, 2026 retail snapshot collected by The Utility Reform Network listed Tello at $8 for 0 GB and $10 for 2 GB, plus $14 for 5 GB and $19 for 10 GB; it listed Red Pocket at $10 for 3 GB. That snapshot excluded promotional pricing and add-ons. The current provider pages checked October 13, 2026 show different tiers, including Tello’s $15 10 GB and $25 50 GB options. Use the current carrier pages and checkout total when making a purchase decision, not the historical figures.
International calling, roaming, and travel
Red Pocket’s current support information says customers can call from the United States to more than 80 countries and roam in more than 60 countries. Those counts do not mean every plan includes the same destinations, minutes, data, or roaming access. Plan level and selected network affect the allowance. An annual-plan disclosure describes specific included roaming amounts, but that disclosure should not be generalized to every monthly tier.
Tello’s destination list, international rates, and data rules should be checked for the particular country and plan you need. Before traveling, verify whether data roaming is included, whether a separate balance is required, how calling is billed, and what happens after an allowance is exhausted. If travel is occasional, compare the cost of the exact roaming package with a local or travel eSIM rather than choosing a domestic plan solely on a broad country count.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hotspot and other extras
Red Pocket lists 10 GB of hotspot data on its 50 GB Premium tier. That allowance is tied to the stated tier; it should not be assumed for Essentials or Plus. Tello’s plan page should be checked for hotspot availability and the amount on the exact tier you select. A phone may display a hotspot toggle even when the plan does not include usable tethering, so test the plan terms before relying on it for a laptop or tablet.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Choosing on the word “unlimited”
Symptom: Data becomes slow partway through the month. Fix: Compare the high-speed allowance and your actual usage, then select a tier with enough headroom or accept the reduced-speed behavior.
Assuming all networks perform the same
Symptom: A phone works well in one neighborhood but drops calls at home or work. Fix: Run address-level checks and choose the network with the strongest local result before activation.
Porting before checking the IMEI
Symptom: The number transfers but the phone cannot register or make VoLTE calls. Fix: Check unlock status, IMEI compatibility, and VoLTE support before submitting the port. If the transfer is already complete, contact the new carrier from another phone and ask about device compatibility and port recovery options.
Comparing sticker prices instead of totals
Symptom: The first bill is higher than the plan advertisement. Fix: Review recurring taxes, recovery charges, administrative fees, and one-time activation or shipping items in the checkout summary.
Expecting hotspot or roaming to be universal
Symptom: Tethering or overseas data does not work as expected. Fix: Re-read the exact plan and network terms; confirm the allowance and destination before travel or relying on a laptop connection.
A decision process that takes five minutes
- Look at your last two or three months of cellular data and choose a realistic high-speed target.
- Compare that target in the current plan table: $10 for light use, $15 for Tello’s 10 GB tier, $20 for either carrier’s 20 GB tier, or $25/$30 for 50 GB.
- Check both carriers’ coverage at your home, workplace, and regular travel locations.
- Enter your phone’s IMEI, confirm it is unlocked and VoLTE-capable, and select the compatible SIM or eSIM method.
- Add the plan to each checkout, enter the same address, and record recurring taxes and fees.
- Check the exact hotspot and international allowance if either feature affects your choice.
- Only then order service and begin the number-transfer process, keeping the old account active until completion.
How current are these figures?
Red Pocket and Tello plan pages used for this comparison were checked October 13, 2026. Mobile pricing, allowances, taxes, and network terms can change after promotions or plan revisions. Recheck the provider pages and the final checkout total immediately before purchase, especially if you are relying on a particular network, hotspot allowance, roaming feature, or annual-plan benefit.
