“Red oxygen” is the high-pressure solid form known as epsilon-phase oxygen. A 2006 single-crystal X-ray study found that its structure contains groups of four O2 molecules arranged as a rhombohedral molecular unit, described as O8. That is a structural unit in a crystal lattice—not an isolated O8 molecule or an S8-like ring.
What is red oxygen?
Red oxygen is the common name used in this context for epsilon-phase solid molecular oxygen. Under pressure, oxygen can form distinct solid phases; the epsilon phase is notable for its dark-red color, strong infrared absorption and magnetic collapse. The 2006 study describes it as stable over a large pressure domain but does not give a numerical range for that domain in its abstract. Nature’s 2006 paper identifies the phase and reports the structural determination.

What structure did the study reveal?
The researchers found that four O2 molecules associate into a rhombohedral molecular unit, which they describe as O8. The unit is part of the organized molecular lattice of epsilon oxygen. The authors characterized the interactions holding the O2 components together as probably weak chemical bonds.

So O8 is useful shorthand for the four-molecule structural grouping, but it should not be read as proof that the crystal contains free-standing O8 molecules. Nor does the reported structure mean the atoms form a simple eight-atom ring. The distinction is between a repeating molecular arrangement within a solid and an independently isolated molecule.

How was the structure determined?
The team determined the structure from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected at pressures between 13 and 18 GPa. The proposed structure was consistent with existing spectroscopic data, and the researchers reported observing a Raman stretching mode that the structure had predicted. These checks supported the model alongside the diffraction results. The Nature paper was published on 14 September 2006 in volume 443, pages 201–204.
Why was the result important?
Epsilon oxygen’s infrared behavior had suggested that oxygen molecules formed larger groupings, but the precise structure had remained unresolved. The diffraction study supplied a structural model: four O2 molecules associated in a rhombohedral unit within the solid lattice. A SPring-8 announcement also described the determination of the epsilon-phase structure.

The result connected the phase’s unusual observed properties with a specific arrangement of molecules. It did not establish that O8 can be isolated as a stable, ordinary-pressure substance; the finding concerns solid oxygen under high pressure.
What the O8 description does—and does not—mean
- It means: a structural unit made from four O2 molecules, arranged rhombohedrally in the epsilon-phase lattice.
- It does not mean: the experiment isolated a free O8 molecule or established a simple ring structure.
- It is based on: high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction, with consistency checks from spectroscopy and a predicted Raman mode.
A concise description of the authors’ conclusion is that epsilon oxygen consists of four O2 molecules associated into a rhombohedral molecular unit, linked by bonds they considered probably weak.
