Neither color treats every type of acne or guarantees results. Check the exact mask’s intended use, instructions, and wavelength rather than assuming all devices work alike.
What blue light is for
Blue visible light is used in some devices to treat inflammatory acne pimples. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) cautions that visible-light acne treatments do not treat blackheads, whiteheads, acne cysts, or nodules. A blue-light mask therefore should not be treated as an all-purpose acne treatment, especially for deep or painful breakouts. AAD: Lasers and lights—How well do they treat acne?

One FDA 510(k) summary describes a particular mask with blue LEDs centered at 415 nm ±5 nm and an intended use for mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne. That is a device-specific example, not a standard wavelength or indication for every mask. FDA 510(k) summary K192295
What red light is for
Some LED masks use red light for wrinkle-related concerns. In the same FDA summary, a particular mask’s red LEDs are centered at 630 nm ±5 nm, and its stated indication is periorbital wrinkles—the area around the eyes. These figures and claims apply to that device’s submission, not universally to red-light masks.

The AAD says studies suggest red-light devices may produce subtle-to-noticeable facial results for some concerns, but results vary. Treat marketing claims as model-specific, and do not assume that a mask has proven results for every concern named in its advertising. AAD: Is red light therapy right for your skin?
Which color should you choose?
| Concern | Potentially relevant light | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Inflammatory acne pimples | Blue, or a blue-plus-red mode when the device’s labeling specifies acne use | Visible light does not treat blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, or nodules, according to the AAD. |
| Wrinkle-related concerns | Red, when the device is labeled for that purpose | Indications vary by device; one FDA summary specifies periorbital wrinkles, not wrinkles generally for all masks. |
Start with the concern you want to address, then verify that the specific device’s labeling includes that intended use. A multi-color setting does not establish that the mask treats every condition listed in its marketing.

How to compare devices and understand FDA information
Wavelength and output are device-specific. For example, the FDA summary for one facemask-shaped LED device describes 150 LEDs, with blue light centered at 415 nm ±5 nm and red light centered at 630 nm ±5 nm. Those specifications should not be taken as universal requirements or proof that another mask has the same performance.

It lists Class II, product code OLP, and regulation 21 CFR 878.4810; it also describes outputs pre-tuned to a particular wavelength with a narrow spectral bandwidth. This classification concerns a device type and intended use. It does not mean every consumer mask has FDA clearance, the same indications, or equivalent evidence. At-home visible-light acne devices are less powerful than devices used by dermatologists, and the AAD says there is no way to know in advance who will see results. The AAD describes some devices that may require use twice daily for 30 to 60 minutes over four to five weeks, but schedules differ. Follow the instructions for your own model rather than applying that example to every mask.
