A red dot provides an illuminated aiming point; iron sights provide a mechanical aiming reference. On compatible AR-15 configurations, both can be available through the optic window: the irons offer an alternate sight picture if the optic fails or becomes unusable. The right arrangement depends on the optic, mount, rail, iron-sight height, and the sight picture you prefer—not on one setup being universally better.
How red dots and iron sights differ
| Sight type | What it provides | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Red dot | An illuminated aiming point from an electronic optic. Some supported AR-15 configurations allow the iron sights to remain visible through the optic window. | Confirm the optic and mount fit the rifle, and verify the final zero according to the optic maker’s instructions. |
| Iron sights | A mechanical aiming reference that can serve as an alternate reference with a compatible optic. | Fixed or folding design, sight height, and mount relationship affect whether the sights are visible and usable. |
Neither sight type is established as faster, more accurate, or better in all circumstances by the manufacturer guidance cited here. The practical choice is the sight picture and configuration that suit your needs and that you can use and verify.

What co-witness means
Co-witness means the optic and firearm sights are aligned so both can provide an aiming reference. SIG Sauer explains that the sight relationship depends on the optic, mounting system, rail, and iron-sight height; a co-witness label alone does not establish compatibility with every rifle configuration. SIG Sauer’s co-witnessing guide describes two common arrangements:

Absolute co-witness
The iron sights align centrally in the optic window. This keeps the iron-sight picture in the middle of the view, where it may share space with the reticle.

- The Strikefire II Red/Green Dot is a rugged, reliable red dot sight that is at home in a variety of applications. It allows the user to operate between two dot colors and ten brightness settings to easily adjust for changing conditions
- Fully multi-coated lenses provide a clean and bright, unobscured point of view. Unlimited eye relief allows for rapid transitions
- The single-piece chasis is compact and lightweight but still delivers shockproof performance holding up to whatever you throw at it. Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals ensure fogproof and waterproof performance
- An offset cantilever mount is provided; allowing you to move the sight forward to be used in conjunction with a magnifier and backup iron sights
- With aesthetics and functionality in mind, the power controls are at the rear of the Strikefire for easy access. The Strikefire II runs off a CR2 battery
Lower-third co-witness
The iron sights appear in the lower third of the optic window, leaving the reticle higher in the view. The arrangement depends on compatible sight and mount heights; practice using the iron-sight picture rather than assuming it will feel natural immediately.
SIG describes the two arrangements as retaining the same zero; that does not mean a new setup is automatically zeroed. Confirm the sighting arrangement and final zero for the exact equipment in use.

- [ More Accurate ] From 3-4MOA to 2MOA. This Updated MidTen 2MOA red dot sight is more accurate. Unlimited eye relief makes for quick sighting. Multi-coated scratch resistant lens provides optimized image clarity and increases light transmission during low light situations.
- [ Optimized Red Dot ] make the dot centered in the inner tube and not blurry, reduce red glare and extra red lights in the view.
- [ Multi Levels of Brightness ] 11 red dot brightness settings provide optimal visibility in any light conditions. Settings 1-5 are suitable for dim or rainy environment while settings 6-9 are better for a bright or sunny day. Settings 10-11 are good for sunny noon.
- [ Dependable ] A shockproof aluminum housing displays extreme robustness. Nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed. Fully waterproof with sealed housing. Nitrogen inside the scope ensures interior optical surfaces won’t fog due to humidity or rapid temperature change.
- [ 2 Height Mount Options ] Offers two height options (Low and Lower 1/3 Co-Witness), lending its functionality on any platform.
Choose a setup by checking compatibility
Before choosing absolute or lower-third co-witness, check the parts as a system. The optic footprint and mount interface must match, and the mount height must work with the rail and iron sights. A red dot, riser, or iron sight that fits in isolation may not produce the intended sight picture when combined with other parts.
- Identify the exact optic and consult its manual for supported mounting arrangements.
- Check the mount or riser interface and height against the optic and rail.
- Check whether the fixed or folding iron sights will sit at the required height and remain visible through the optic.
- Choose absolute or lower-third based on the resulting sight picture and your preference, then confirm that both references are usable.
EOTECH says its sights are designed to co-witness with iron sights on a standard AR-15 platform, but its model-specific guidance applies to its products—not every optic or mounting combination. Consult the manual for your particular model. EOTECH Help Center

- High-performance 2MOA red dot reticle for enhanced accuracy.
Set up and verify the sight picture safely
- Read the exact manuals. Follow the firearm, optic, and mount makers’ instructions for the specific models and installation.
- Make the firearm safe. Before handling or adjusting it, verify it is unloaded and safe in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. EOTECH’s procedure specifically requires this check.
- Install and inspect the matched components. Use the specified mounting interface and confirm that the optic and iron sights sit at compatible heights. Do not infer fit from a co-witness description alone.
- Use visual alignment only as an initial aid where supported. EOTECH describes a mechanical alignment method for its sights; this is not a substitute for the instructions for another optic.
- Confirm the zero as instructed. EOTECH and Leupold both call for shooting to verify. Follow the exact manufacturer procedure and select a zero appropriate to the firearm’s configuration and intended use. Leupold’s red-dot zeroing article gives example distances, not a universal prescription for every AR-15.
- Check the backup reference. If relying on irons as an alternate, confirm they are installed, compatible, secured, visible, and usable—not merely present on the rifle.
When backup irons help—and what they do not guarantee
Compatible iron sights can offer another aiming reference if an optic loses power or becomes unusable, and may help check an optic reference. That benefit depends on the sights being correctly installed and usable. HIVIZ’s co-witness guidance also notes limits to its described technique, including higher mounts and magnified optics; do not apply that method outside its stated conditions. HIVIZ co-witnessing guidance
Co-witnessing does not by itself guarantee that a backup sight picture will work with every optic, mount, or failure. Confirm compatibility and zero, and learn the sight picture for the equipment you actually have.
