What happens when you start Red Dead Redemption 2: do you see a padlock, a disc-reading message, an error code, a crash after launch, or no response? The right first fix depends on whether you use a PS4 or PS5 and a disc or digital copy. Work through the matching checks below before deleting the game or resetting your console.
First identify your console, copy and symptom
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a PS4 game that can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility; it is not a native PS5 edition. PlayStation says a system software update may be required and notes, “Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent.” See PlayStation’s RDR2 product page.

- Console: PS4 or PS5?
- Copy: physical disc or digital download?
- Symptom: padlock or access message, disc-reading message, error code, crash after loading, or no response?
- Comparison: do other games start, and does the console read other discs?
These checks help separate an account or license problem from a disc, installation, storage, or broader console issue. PlayStation’s game-start troubleshooting guide covers PS4 and PS5 procedures, but does not establish a current RDR2-specific bug or a universal fix.

Check access before reinstalling. A padlock can indicate that the console cannot verify the game license.

- Sign in with the PlayStation account that bought the game. Check that the transaction completed and that the game appears in that account’s library.
- If you access the game through PlayStation Plus, confirm the subscription is active and the game is still available to that account.
- If another account owns the game, check the sharing arrangement: on PS5, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4, verify the owner’s primary-console activation.
- Restore licenses, then try starting the game again. PlayStation lists this among its steps for games that will not start.
Do not buy the game again until you have confirmed which account owns it and whether that account can access it.
If you have the disc edition
Start with the disc and drive rather than deleting game data.

- Eject and reseat the disc, making sure it is inserted in the correct orientation for your console.
- Inspect it for fingerprints or dirt. If needed, clean it with a soft, clean cloth, as PlayStation’s PS5 disc guidance recommends. Avoid abrasive materials or unapproved cleaning fluids.
- Try another supported game disc or other supported optical media. If other discs read normally, the RDR2 disc may be the issue; if several discs fail, the drive or console needs further troubleshooting.
If the RDR2 disc is visibly damaged or still cannot be read after cleaning, note the exact on-screen message and contact PlayStation Support or the retailer as appropriate. One failed disc does not by itself prove the console drive is faulty.
If you have a digital copy or an installed game
For an installed copy that fails without a disc-reading symptom, try the lower-risk checks first. Allow for a potentially large redownload before removing the game.

- Restart the PS4 or PS5, then try launching RDR2 again.
- Restore licenses if you have not already done so.
- Check that the console has current system software and enough free storage for the game and any required update.
- If the game is on USB extended storage on PS5, move it to the console’s internal storage and try again.
- If the earlier steps do not help, delete the game application and download or install it again. Use a wired connection if feasible; the download may take time and use substantial bandwidth.

Use Safe Mode only after the basic checks
Safe Mode starts the console with basic functions and offers maintenance options. Its menu differs by console: PS5 provides Clear Cache and Rebuild Database with separate cache and database actions, while PS4 provides Rebuild Database, which scans the drive and creates a new content database. Follow PlayStation’s console-specific Safe Mode instructions rather than guessing at a button sequence or menu choice.

Some Safe Mode options erase data. Back up important data before any reset or system-software reinstallation, and do not choose Reset, Initialize, or a reinstall-system-software option as a casual troubleshooting step. PlayStation’s guide explains the options and their effects.
When the problem persists
Record the exact error code and message, console model, whether you use a disc or digital copy, what happens after selecting the game, and the steps that reproduce the failure. A screenshot or short video can help support distinguish the symptom. Use PlayStation Support’s game-start guidance or the official PlayStation Repairs route if the issue remains unresolved.

An error code should be handled according to its own PlayStation guidance; it is not evidence by itself of a particular RDR2 bug or failed hardware component. For example, PlayStation’s CE-41839-5 page gives error-specific application troubleshooting and warns about backing up before initialization. That example does not mean CE-41839-5 is specific to RDR2.
