Virgin polyester is made from newly extracted fossil-derived feedstocks; recycled polyester is made by reprocessing recovered material into fiber. Either can be used in an outdoor jacket. The fiber label alone does not establish which jacket is stronger, warmer, more waterproof, or longer-lasting. To choose well, compare the garment’s construction and verified material claims—and treat environmental benefits as dependent on the specific production route and the scope of the evidence.
What changes when polyester is recycled?
The core difference is the feedstock. Virgin polyester starts with petrochemical inputs derived from fossil resources. Textile Exchange identifies monoethylene glycol (MEG), purified terephthalic acid (PTA), and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) among the main inputs used to make virgin polyester. Recycled polyester starts with recovered material that is processed into fiber; the recovered feedstock and the recycling method can vary.

Recovered material may be described as post-consumer or pre-consumer. Post-consumer material has been used by a consumer and then collected for recycling. Pre-consumer material is recovered from manufacturing or other processing before reaching the consumer. A product page that identifies which type is used gives more information than one that simply says “eco” or “made with recycled content.”

| Material or route | Feedstock and process | Hotspots identified by Textile Exchange |
|---|---|---|
| Virgin polyester | New fossil-derived petrochemical feedstocks, including MEG, PTA, and DMT | Petrochemical inputs dominate most of the assessed impact categories; electricity and heat also contribute. |
| Thermomechanically recycled polyester | Recovered material is processed through a thermomechanical recycling route | Electricity and feedstock collection; long-distance transport to facilities is especially relevant for several assessed categories. |
| Chemically recycled polyester | Recovered material is processed through a chemical recycling route | Electricity, heat, and process chemicals, including solvents such as methanol. |
Thermomechanical and chemical recycling should not be treated as interchangeable labels. They can involve different feedstocks, energy demands, transport patterns, and process inputs. If a brand discloses the route, that information helps explain why two recycled-polyester products may not have identical environmental profiles.
These are findings about fiber production, not a complete environmental score for a finished jacket. Textile Exchange’s 2026 study is cradle-to-gate: it covers resource extraction through fiber formation. It includes new production data from Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia, and China, and adds an assessment of human-rights impacts. It does not by itself describe what happens during jacket assembly, distribution, consumer use, washing, repair, or end-of-life.
Textile Exchange also cautions that its datasets should not be compared with other studies—or treated as interchangeable with one another—as if their systems and methods were directly equivalent. A figure from one boundary or supply chain cannot automatically be lined up against a figure from another and presented as a universal ranking.
Does recycled polyester perform as well in a jacket?
The available evidence does not establish a universal performance winner. Patagonia describes polyester, including virgin and recycled versions, as durable, lightweight, and quick-drying, and describes polyester as naturally water-repellent. Those are material-level descriptions, not results from a controlled test of otherwise identical jackets.
No controlled head-to-head outdoor-jacket test was identified comparing matched recycled- and virgin-polyester garments for abrasion resistance, tear strength, warmth, waterproofness, drying time, or service life. It would be inaccurate to infer from the feedstock label alone that one version is stronger, weaker, warmer, or more durable.
| What you want to know | What the fiber label establishes | What to check on the jacket |
|---|---|---|
| Will it keep rain out? | Recycled content does not establish waterproofness. | Fabric construction, membrane or coating, seam treatment, and the maker’s stated waterproof and breathability specifications. |
| Will it keep me warm? | Recycled or virgin content does not establish warmth. | Whether the jacket is insulated or a shell, the insulation type and amount, and how it is intended to be layered. |
| Will it stand up to wear? | Feedstock status alone does not establish abrasion resistance, tear strength, or service life. | Construction, fabric specifications relevant to your use, repair options, and care instructions. |
| Will it dry quickly? | Polyester is commonly described as quick-drying, but this does not rank two finished jackets. | The product’s materials and construction, plus any relevant product-level testing the maker provides. |
A water-repellent fiber is not the same as a waterproof jacket. Water protection depends on the fabric construction and the design details that keep rain from entering at seams, closures, cuffs, and the hood. Likewise, warmth in an insulated jacket depends on its insulation and construction, not merely on whether the polyester is recycled.
Construction can differ even when two labels both say “100% polyester.” One jacket may use a tightly woven face fabric, another a stretch weave; one may have a membrane, another a coating, and a third neither. Stitching, seam sealing, zippers, pockets, hood adjustment, cuffs, and fit all affect use in weather. The fiber origin is only one part of that system.

Columbia’s OutDry Extreme Eco product page provides a concrete example of recycled polyester in rainwear: it describes the jacket’s main fabric as 100% recycled polyester and presents the product line as rain-protective. That demonstrates a use of recycled polyester in a rainwear product; it does not isolate the fiber’s contribution to weather protection or establish the performance of all jackets made with recycled polyester.
Is recycled polyester better for the environment?
Recycled polyester can avoid some demand for newly extracted petrochemical feedstocks, but the label alone does not prove that a finished jacket has a lower total life-cycle impact. The recycling route, energy use, chemical inputs, transport, and the stages included in an assessment all matter. Textile Exchange’s 2026 LCA identifies different production hotspots for virgin, thermomechanical-recycled, and chemically recycled polyester, and its cradle-to-gate boundary does not cover a jacket’s full life.
For virgin production, Textile Exchange identifies the petrochemical inputs themselves as the dominant contributor to most assessed impact categories, with electricity and heat also contributing. For thermomechanical recycling, electricity and the collection of recovered feedstock are important, with long transport to recycling facilities especially relevant for several categories. For chemical recycling, electricity and heat combine with process chemicals, including solvents such as methanol. These distinctions explain why “recycled” is not a sufficient description of an environmental profile.
A separate, company-commissioned comparison summarized by PUMA in its 2023 annual report reported a 13.19% lower carbon footprint per kilogram for a PET recycled-polyester sports jersey than for its virgin-polyester jersey comparator. The study compared three jerseys in a specified Turkey supply chain using a cradle-to-grave approach. Its result is specific to those jerseys and that supply chain; it does not establish the carbon difference for outdoor jackets, nor does one carbon result settle every environmental impact category.
The word “cradle-to-grave” in that PUMA comparison matters because it describes a broader boundary than the cradle-to-gate boundary in Textile Exchange’s 2026 study. The two results answer different questions and should not be merged into a single percentage for polyester jackets. A product comparison is only meaningful when the products, supply chains, assumptions, functional unit, and life-cycle boundary are clear.
Scale helps explain why polyester choices matter, but industry totals should not be confused with jacket-level outcomes. Patagonia’s current polyester page attributes to Textile Exchange a figure of 86 million metric tons of polyester, about 59% of global fiber production, in 2024. The same page reports 78 million metric tons, or 57%, for 2023. These figures describe polyester’s share of global fiber production, not the recycled content or impact of any particular garment.
Patagonia also reports that 94% of its polyester fabric by weight across its Spring 2026 collection was recycled polyester. That is a company-specific seasonal figure, not an industry-wide rate and not a statement that every Patagonia garment—or every component in each garment—was 94% recycled.

Beth Jensen, Textile Exchange’s Chief Impact Officer, said the organization’s June 11, 2026 announcement marked “a significant update to existing polyester LCA data” and advanced understanding of production impacts for the fashion, textile, and apparel industry. That statement describes the value of improved production data; it is not a performance guarantee for any jacket.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to read a recycled-content claim
Start by finding out what the percentage applies to. A jacket may contain separate face fabric, lining, insulation, thread, trims, labels, and other components. A claim about the face fabric does not necessarily describe the whole garment. Look for the named component, the percentage, and—when the maker provides it—the feedstock type, such as pre-consumer or post-consumer material.
- “100% recycled polyester face fabric” describes the face fabric, not automatically the lining, insulation, or entire jacket.
- “Made with recycled polyester” does not tell you the percentage or which component contains it unless the product page gives those details.
- “Recycled polyester lining” identifies a component but says nothing about the shell or insulation unless those are separately described.
- “Recycled content by weight” should be read with the product or component to which the percentage is attached.
- A certification or chain-of-custody claim can provide evidence about materials and how they are tracked, but read what the particular certification and claim actually cover.
Textile Exchange says its Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and Global Recycled Standard (GRS) set criteria for third-party certification of recycled materials and chain of custody. Its current standards page describes GRS as requiring at least 50% recycled content and adding social, environmental, and chemical requirements. The GRS threshold is a standard requirement, not a claim that every certified jacket is 50% recycled overall; check the certified scope and product claim.
Certification does not eliminate the need to read the composition statement. A certificate may cover a facility, a process, a material stream, or a defined product scope. The meaningful question is whether that scope corresponds to the jacket you are considering and to the percentage being advertised.
There is also a standards transition underway. Textile Exchange released criteria for its Materials Matter Standard on December 12, 2025. According to its current standards information, the new standard becomes effective on December 31, 2026, and becomes mandatory from December 31, 2027 for the stated Tier 4 audit transition. These dates describe the transition schedule, not a change in the physical composition of jackets already on sale. Because requirements can change, check the official standard information when evaluating a new claim.

ISO 14021:2026 defines recycled content as the proportion by mass of recycled material in a product, component, or packaging. It also notes that when chain of custody uses mass-balance attribution, the attributed recycled content cannot be guaranteed in each individual product supplied. In other words, a chain-of-custody system and a claim about the precise physical contents of one garment are not automatically the same thing.
For shoppers in the UK, Competition and Markets Authority guidance on fashion environmental claims says retailers should use precise, objective descriptions such as “recycled polyester” and make clear how much of a garment or fabric has the claimed characteristic. It also says a product should not be described as wholly recycled if it contains more than negligible non-recycled fibers. This is UK consumer-law guidance, not a global legal rule.

How to compare two outdoor jackets
Compare jackets by the job they need to do before comparing their recycled-content percentages. A rain shell, wind shell, fleece midlayer, and insulated jacket solve different problems; a higher recycled share does not make one category a substitute for another.
- Define the conditions. Decide whether you need a rain shell, wind shell, fleece or other midlayer, or insulated jacket. Consider the weather and activity for which you will use it.
- Check weather protection. For rain, inspect the stated waterproof and breathability specifications, membrane or coating, seam treatment, hood, and cuff design. Do not treat “water-repellent” as synonymous with “waterproof.”
- Check warmth and layering. See whether the garment is a shell intended to be layered or an insulated jacket. For insulation, look for its type and amount rather than relying on the shell fabric’s recycled status.
- Locate the recycled-content claim. Identify the exact component and percentage. Note whether the maker identifies pre-consumer or post-consumer feedstock, and whether the claim is about the fabric or the entire garment.
- Assess durability and care for your use. Consider construction, likely abrasion, repair options, and the care instructions. Do not assume service life from recycled or virgin status alone.
- Check the evidence behind broad claims. Look for a relevant product-level test or an LCA whose boundary and supply chain match the claim. For certification, check the standard and the scope of the chain-of-custody claim.
When comparing product pages, write down the details rather than relying on a headline. Record the shell fiber and percentage, lining and insulation composition, membrane or coating, waterproof and breathability specifications, seam treatment, intended use, and any certification identifier. This prevents a precise claim about one component from being mistaken for a claim about the complete jacket.
Ask whether the comparison is like for like. Comparing a recycled-polyester rain shell with a virgin-polyester insulated parka does not test the fiber choice; it compares different garments with different purposes. Even two rain shells may differ in fabric weight, construction, membrane, seam sealing, hood design, and fit. Those differences can matter more to use than the recycled percentage.
If performance matters most, prioritize the jacket’s specifications and the conditions it is designed for. If recycled content matters to you, use a clearly scoped composition claim to compare like components. When a product page gives only a broad environmental phrase without identifying the component, percentage, or basis, it does not give enough information to compare the jackets precisely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming recycled means automatically waterproof. Waterproofness comes from the garment’s weatherproof construction and testing, not the word “recycled.”
- Assuming recycled means automatically more durable. No controlled jacket comparison establishes a universal strength or service-life advantage.
- Comparing percentages without checking the denominator. A face-fabric percentage and a whole-garment percentage are different claims.
- Treating all recycled polyester as one route. Thermomechanical and chemical recycling have different identified hotspots.
- Mixing LCA results with different boundaries. A cradle-to-gate fiber assessment is not directly equivalent to a cradle-to-grave product comparison.
- Reading certification as a guarantee of every physical fiber. Mass-balance attribution can support a chain-of-custody claim without guaranteeing the attributed percentage in each individual item.
- Using a company figure as an industry average. Patagonia’s Spring 2026 percentage and PUMA’s jersey result apply to their stated products or programs.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Current material descriptions and product examples show that recycled polyester can be used in outdoor apparel, including a rainwear product. Textile Exchange’s 2026 assessment helps distinguish the production routes and their cradle-to-gate hotspots, while the PUMA jersey comparison supplies one bounded example of a lower carbon footprint in a specified supply chain. None of these sources demonstrates a universal jacket-level advantage in performance or total environmental impact.
That distinction is useful when reading confident marketing claims. A recycled-content figure is a statement about material composition or attribution; a waterproof rating is a product-performance claim; and a life-cycle result is meaningful only within its stated system boundary and comparison. They answer different questions and should not be used as substitutes for one another.
The practical conclusion is straightforward: choose the jacket that meets the required weather, warmth, fit, durability, and serviceability needs, then use a precise recycled-content and certification claim as an additional comparison point. Neither virgin nor recycled polyester is a complete description of a jacket.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is recycled polyester as good as regular polyester in an outdoor jacket?
The available evidence does not establish a universal difference in strength, warmth, waterproofness, drying time, or service life. Compare the jacket’s fabric construction, membrane or coating, insulation, seams, fit, specifications, care requirements, and repair options.
Are recycled-polyester jackets durable?
They can be durable, but durability cannot be inferred from recycled content alone. No controlled head-to-head jacket test established a universal recycled-versus-virgin advantage for abrasion, tear strength, or service life.
Is recycled polyester waterproof?
Recycled polyester fiber is not the same as a waterproof jacket. Waterproofness depends on the fabric construction, membrane or coating, seam treatment, hood, cuffs, closures, and the maker’s stated performance specifications.

No. Environmental results depend on the feedstock, recycling route, electricity and heat, transport, process chemicals, and the life-cycle boundary. Textile Exchange identifies different hotspots for virgin, thermomechanical, and chemical production routes.
What does 100% recycled polyester mean on a jacket?
Check what the percentage modifies. “100% recycled polyester face fabric” describes the face fabric and does not automatically describe the lining, insulation, trims, or entire garment.
What is the difference between RCS and GRS?
Textile Exchange describes both as standards for third-party certification of recycled materials and chain of custody. It describes GRS as requiring at least 50% recycled content and adding social, environmental, and chemical requirements. Check the certified product scope.
Does a mass-balance claim mean every jacket contains the exact recycled percentage?
Not necessarily. ISO 14021:2026 notes that where chain of custody uses mass-balance attribution, the attributed recycled content cannot be guaranteed in each individual product supplied.

The Bottom Line
Virgin polyester starts with new fossil-derived feedstocks; recycled polyester starts with recovered material. Neither label alone predicts a jacket’s performance or full environmental impact. Compare the complete garment—construction, weather protection, insulation, specifications, composition, certification scope, care, and repairability—and treat every environmental figure as limited to its stated product, supply chain, and life-cycle boundary.
