Neither a recurve nor a compound bow is universally better for a beginner. A recurve is a sensible first choice if you want traditional shooting or a recurve target path; a compound may suit you if you prefer less effort holding the bow at full draw or want to explore compound target shooting or hunting. The best first step is to try both through an introductory lesson or local club, then choose a bow that fits your strength, draw length, and goals.
How recurve and compound bows feel different
The main difference is how each bow behaves after you draw it. With a recurve, you continue to hold the bow’s draw weight while aiming. A compound uses cams to create let-off, reducing the force you need to hold at full draw. That can make aiming feel less demanding, but it does not mean the compound takes no effort to draw or that every compound is beginner-friendly.

USA Archery notes that recurve bows can take more strength to pull back, while Texas Parks and Wildlife explains that let-off reduces the holding force on a compound. Neither distinction establishes which bow will be easier for you overall: fit, draw weight, technique, and instruction matter.

Key terms
- Draw weight: The force needed to draw a bow. The right weight depends on the archer and the bow.
- Let-off: A compound bow’s cam system reduces the force held once the bow reaches full draw.
- Dry fire: Releasing a bowstring without an arrow. USA Archery warns that an accidental compound dry fire can damage the bow or injure the archer.
Which bow fits your goals?
| Consideration | Recurve | Compound |
|---|---|---|
| How it feels at full draw | You continue managing the draw weight while aiming. | Cams provide let-off and reduce the holding force at full draw. |
| Goals it may suit | Traditional shooting or a recurve target-archery path. | Compound target shooting or hunting, depending on the model and your goals. |
| What needs to fit | A manageable draw weight and suitable bow size. | Draw length and draw weight matched to the archer. |
| Useful first step | Try a beginner bow with an instructor or club before buying. | Try a suitable compound with instruction; do not treat a heavy hunting setup as a generic beginner bow. |
As Texas Parks and Wildlife puts it, “The best bow for you is the bow that fits your plans, needs, and budget.” Think first about what kind of archery you want to do, then get help choosing a bow for your body and ability.

Choose a manageable draw weight—not a number from a chart
USA Archery recommends starting with a low-weight, low-poundage bow and considering whether your aim is recreational or competitive target archery or hunting. Easton Foundations lists 15–25 pounds for beginner recurves and 40–50 pounds for compound bows as typical starting guidance, but these are general ranges, not prescriptions. Comfort and control matter more than power; ask a qualified instructor or archery shop to help assess your fit.
For a compound, draw length is another important fit. A bow that is not suited to your draw length or strength can make sound technique harder. Do not choose a heavy hunting bow just because you hope to hunt later; get advice on a suitable setup for your current ability and intended use.

What equipment do you need to start?
You do not have to buy a complete setup before finding out whether you enjoy archery. USA Archery describes beginner programs that use basic compound and/or recurve bows, and Texas Parks and Wildlife points readers toward youth clubs and coaching resources. Ask a local club or instructor whether it can provide equipment for a first session.

Learn safely before increasing distance or difficulty
USA Archery warns that an unsuitable draw weight or incorrect drawing can injure the shoulder muscles, rotator cuff, or biceps tendon. Start with instruction and use equipment suited to your strength and skill. In its Adaptive Archery Manual, USA Archery advises that a new archer’s first shot start no more than 10 meters away, with an instructor helping judge the initial aim. That is coached guidance in this manual, not a universal range rule.
For compound training exercises, USA Archery cautions against repeatedly letting the bow down, which can increase the probability of shoulder injury, and against drawing a compound without an arrow because an accidental dry fire could damage the bow or injure the archer. The article recommends alternatives for those exercises, including a training aid, recurve bow, stretch band, or string loop. Follow an instructor’s guidance rather than improvising compound training.

A practical way to decide
- Choose a goal: Decide whether you are more interested in traditional shooting, recurve target archery, compound target archery, or hunting.
- Book a lesson or club session: Ask whether you can try both bow types with basic club or lesson equipment.
- Ask for a fit check: Have an instructor or archery shop help match bow size, draw weight, and—on a compound—draw length to you.
- Practice with matched equipment: Use arrows selected for the bow’s power and intended use, and follow the range’s safety rules.
- Buy after you know what suits you: Choose a beginner recurve or adjustable beginner compound based on how it feels, what you want to shoot, and the advice of someone who can fit it in person.
