An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the platform employers use to organize job openings, candidate records, applications and hiring stages. Recruiting automation is software handling or coordinating recruiting tasks—such as distributing jobs, screening applications, scheduling interviews or sending messages. They are not competing categories: an ATS may include automation, and separate automation tools can connect to an ATS and other hiring systems.
What an applicant tracking system does
An ATS serves as a recruiting system of record and workflow platform. It brings job requisitions and postings, applications, candidate profiles and hiring-stage information into one place. Recruiters and hiring managers can use it to see where candidates are in the process and coordinate work around each opening.

Depending on the product and how an employer configures it, an ATS may also support job distribution, résumé parsing, screening, interview scheduling, interviewer feedback, background-check integrations, offers, candidate notifications, analytics, permissions and compliance documentation. Those capabilities are not guaranteed to be identical across ATS products.

Recruiting automation describes software actions and workflows that reduce manual, repeatable work. It is a functional description, not necessarily the name of a separate application. Automation may distribute job listings, parse or screen résumés, arrange interviews, send communications or move information between systems.
Some automation is built into an ATS. Other automation tools connect with an ATS, recruiting CRM, job boards, interview platforms or HR systems. The boundary depends on the products and the employer’s setup, so the label alone does not tell you which tasks a tool actually covers.
How the two work together
Consider a candidate who applies for a role. The ATS can keep the application and current interview stage. A workflow can then send the candidate a scheduling link, remind an interviewer or update the candidate when the stage changes. Those actions might be configured in the ATS or handled by a connected service.
In this arrangement, the ATS holds and organizes the recruiting records; automation performs or coordinates selected actions using those records. An ATS can automate some work without covering every workflow an employer needs, while a separate automation product may depend on ATS data rather than replace the system that stores it.
Compare tools by what they cover
When assessing an ATS, an automation product or a combination, compare the actual workflows and controls rather than assuming the categories are mutually exclusive.
| Evaluation area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| System of record and workflow scope | Does the product manage requisitions, candidate profiles, hiring stages, feedback and offers, or automate only selected tasks? |
| Integrations | Can it exchange information with the job boards, sourcing or CRM tools, calendars, interview systems, HRIS and onboarding processes your organization uses? |
| Human review and control | Which steps run automatically? Who can review or override outcomes, and what records are retained? These are questions to resolve for your implementation; there is no single control model established for every product. |
| Collaboration and candidate communication | How are hiring-manager feedback, interview coordination and status updates handled? Consider the application experience from the candidate’s perspective as well. |
| Reporting and governance | Check funnel reporting, access permissions, audit trails, data handling and fit with your compliance requirements. |
| Adoption and fit | Assess usability, workflow configurability and support, and whether recruiters and hiring managers are likely to use the system consistently. |
Choose based on the workflow, not the label
If the need is to centralize job and candidate records and manage applicants through hiring stages, evaluate ATS platforms for that system-of-record role. If the main problem is repetitive work—such as scheduling or routine communications—check whether an existing ATS can handle it or whether a connected automation tool is needed. For either choice, verify the specific features, integrations and review controls against your hiring process before deciding.
