Accidentally deleting SMS or RCS chats is common—and the frustrating part is that recovery isn’t always guaranteed. Still, with Samsung Galaxy devices, you have several realistic paths: restoring from backups, re-syncing from accounts, and in some cases using PC-based recovery tools.
This guide walks you through every viable method in a practical order, with exact settings to check and clear “if this then that” troubleshooting when the first attempt fails.

Why Deleted Text Messages on Samsung Can (Sometimes) Be Recovered
When you delete a message thread, the app typically removes it from the interface and marks the underlying data as eligible to be overwritten. If the phone hasn’t overwritten that storage yet—and if you have the right backups—you can often restore the messages.

Before You Start: Prerequisites and What Changes the Outcome
Stop making changes right away
Time and new writes matter. After you delete the messages, avoid installing large apps, downloading media, or resetting your phone until you’ve tried the recovery steps below.
Know which app you used
Samsung ships Messages (Samsung Messages) on many Galaxy models, but some users switch to Google Messages. The recovery method depends on which app created the message history.
Confirm your backup sources
- Samsung Cloud (for Samsung account backups, including some message data depending on device/software).
- Google One (device backup that may include SMS for Google Messages in supported setups).
- Smart Switch backups (local/PC backups you created earlier).
- Carrier/SIM-related history (limited for modern networks and depends on your provider).
Gather the basics
- Your Samsung account sign-in details.
- Your Google Account (the same one used on the phone).
- Approximate deletion time and whether you use SMS or RCS.
Check Whether the Messages Are Still in Your Device
Before you restore from backups, verify whether the deletion was only a thread “hide” or a search filter issue, or if messages are in an archive/trash-like state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSearch within the Messages app
- Open Messages.
- Tap Search (magnifying glass).
- Type the sender name, phone number, or a keyword from the message.
If you find messages here, they weren’t truly deleted from storage—just not visible in the default view.
Check blocked/filtered conversations (common confusion)
Some users misinterpret “missing” messages that were actually moved due to spam filtering or contact blocking. Review these places in Messages settings.
- Open Messages → More options (⋮).
- Go to Settings → look for Spam protection, Blocked numbers, or similar options.
Recover from Samsung Cloud (Samsung Messages)
Samsung Cloud is the most direct option if you used the Samsung Messages app and had backups enabled. Availability depends on your Galaxy model and software version.

Step 1: Confirm Samsung Cloud backup is enabled
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup → Backup and restore → Samsung Cloud.
- Check whether Back up data and the relevant categories were enabled.
Step 2: Restore on the same phone (if your UI offers restore)
On many devices, Samsung Cloud restores during setup or when you choose restore from backup. If you already passed that point, you may need the restore option through the backup settings flow.

- Go to Settings → Accounts and backup → Backup and restore.
- Look for Restore or Data restore and follow the prompts.
Step 3: If the phone was reset or replaced
If you used a new device or performed a reset, recovery is usually performed during the initial setup.
- During setup, sign in to your Samsung account.
- Select the option to Restore from Samsung Cloud.
- Choose the backup date/time that predates the deletion.
Recover from Google Messages Backups (Google One / Google Account)
If you used Google Messages and had device backup enabled, Google’s backup restore flow can bring back SMS history (RCS may not behave identically).
Step 1: Verify Google backup is on and check last backup time
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup → Backup and restore.
- Under Google Account, open Backup.
- Confirm the phone’s backup toggle is enabled and note the last backup date/time.
Step 2: Restore on the same phone (when supported)
Some Samsung builds don’t offer a simple “restore SMS only” button after setup. If you do have a restore option, select restore from the latest backup prior to deletion.
- Go to Settings → Accounts and backup → Backup and restore.
- Select Restore data (or similar wording) if available.
- Sign in to the Google Account, then pick the backup.
Step 3: Restore after a reset or on a new Galaxy
- Complete initial setup.
- When prompted, choose to restore from your Google Account.
- Select the appropriate backup dated before the deletion.
Confirm Google Messages is the app that owns the history
After restore, open Messages and also check if you’re using Samsung’s Messages or Google Messages. If you installed Google Messages later, it may not “pull” old SMS from a different database.

Step 1: Use Smart Switch on a computer
- Install Samsung Smart Switch on a PC or Mac.
- Connect your Galaxy using a USB data cable.
- Open Smart Switch and sign in if prompted.
Step 2: Restore from a previous backup
- In Smart Switch, locate the option to restore from a backup (wording varies by version).
- Select a backup created before the message deletion.
- Start restore and let it finish without interrupting the connection.
What to expect
Smart Switch backups typically work best when you’re restoring to the same or compatible Galaxy family. If you changed phone models, ensure both devices run compatible software and that you restore the correct backup date.
Check for Carrier and SIM-Related Options
Traditional SMS is stored on the device, but some carriers provide limited message retrieval features through account portals or support workflows. This is not guaranteed and usually depends on your provider.
What carriers can (and can’t) do
- Can sometimes help: billing-related records, logs of messages for a time window, or special cases tied to account troubleshooting.
- Usually can’t recover deleted content: full message bodies after deletion from the handset.
Ask support with specific details
When contacting your carrier, provide:
- Phone number (MSISDN) and account holder name
- Approximate date/time the messages were deleted
- Recipient number(s)
- Whether you were using SMS or RCS/iMessage-like services (most aren’t carrier-managed)
Use a PC-Based Approach (When You Need Deeper Recovery)
If there’s no relevant backup, PC-based recovery tools may still find remnants in device storage. Results vary widely based on model, Android version, encryption state, and whether the deleted data has been overwritten.
Use this method only after you’ve tried backups, because it often involves enabling developer options and can require steps that you don’t want to do repeatedly.
Prerequisites for PC recovery attempts
- A stable USB connection (avoid hubs).
- Enough battery (or plug in).
- Correct drivers for your Samsung phone.
- Understanding that encrypted devices often restrict recovery.
General workflow (tool-agnostic)
- Install a reputable Android data recovery utility on your computer.
- Connect your Galaxy and follow the prompts to enable required access.
- Run a scan for SMS/SMS database remnants or message-related artifacts.
- Preview results and export them to your PC.
What results look like
Often you’ll see partial conversations, fragments, or messages dated near the deletion window. If the scan returns nothing, don’t assume it’s hopeless—try a different connection cable/port, or re-run scan without changing storage-heavy settings.
Edge Cases: RCS, Dual SIM, and Recent Deletes
RCS vs SMS
RCS chats use the internet and are managed by Google/your carrier ecosystem through app services. Deleted RCS messages generally don’t restore like SMS does, even with backups.

- SMS is more likely to appear in traditional SMS databases and backups.

Dual SIM considerations
If you have two numbers (Dual SIM), check both SIM lines. Some apps label conversations by SIM, and a restore may repopulate one line more reliably than the other.
“Deleted just now” is your best-case window
Recovery odds drop as the device continues normal usage, background sync, app updates, and storage cleanup. If you deleted within the last few hours, prioritize immediate backup restores and avoid resets until you’ve confirmed backup dates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common Mistakes That Make Recovery Fail
- Performing a factory reset too early: it can overwrite or reorganize storage, depending on the device and sequence of actions.
- Skipping backup date checks: restoring from a backup taken after deletion won’t help.
- Assuming Samsung Messages and Google Messages share the same data: they often don’t.
- Changing the default messaging app after deletion without understanding the message database ownership.
- Using low-quality USB cables: it can interrupt PC scan workflows.
Troubleshooting: What to Try If Nothing Restores
Confirm the correct Google/Samsung account
Message backups are account-bound. Double-check you’re signed into the same Samsung account and the same Google Account on the device.
Try restoring in the right order
- Restore backups first (Samsung Cloud / Google).
- Then sign in to messaging services (if prompted).
- Then verify whether Samsung Messages or Google Messages is the active UI.
Reinstall the messaging app (only if it doesn’t change storage)
If you restored but don’t see the history, reinstalling the same messaging app may force it to reindex its local database. Don’t do this repeatedly—each install can trigger background updates.
Check permissions and messaging storage
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select your messaging app.
- Confirm permissions like SMS (and any related “Display over other apps” or notification permissions if needed).
If you used a third-party cleaner/optimizer
Some cleaners aggressively clear app data, which can remove cached database remnants. If you ran one after deletion, that’s a likely reason recovery fails.

FAQs: Samsung Text Message Recovery
Can I recover deleted texts on Samsung without a backup?
Sometimes. If the data hasn’t been overwritten, PC-based recovery tools may find partial SMS remnants. But there’s no guarantee—your best odds usually come from backups.
Will restoring backup bring back RCS messages?
Often, SMS history restores more reliably than RCS. RCS depends on service-side sync behavior and may not fully reappear after restoration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How far back can Samsung Cloud or Google backup restore?
It depends on how often backups ran. Check the last backup time in Accounts and backup and compare it to your deletion date.
Do deleted messages come back if I reinstall Messages?
It can, if the local database still exists and the app just needs to reindex it. If the messages were purged from storage, reinstalling won’t recreate content.
What if I deleted messages, then updated my phone?
Updates can trigger storage migrations and cleanup. Recovery chances may drop, but you should still try backup restores first because that path bypasses the “overwrite” problem.
Should I turn off Wi‑Fi or mobile data?
It can’t hurt to reduce background syncing while you attempt immediate recovery, especially before you restore backups. However, the real priority is acting on backups quickly and avoiding resets.
Bottom Line
For most Samsung Galaxy users, the most reliable way to recover deleted text messages is restoring from Samsung Cloud (Samsung Messages), Google One/Google Account backup (often for Google Messages/SMS), or Smart Switch backups created before deletion.
If you don’t have backups, PC-based recovery may find remnants—but results are inconsistent, especially with newer encrypted Android storage. Your best next step is to identify which messaging app you used and whether a backup exists from before the deletion time.
