GetData Recover My Files is Windows data-recovery software for logical data loss, such as deleted files or a formatted drive. Its most useful low-risk first step is that the evaluation version can search for and preview files before you buy; GetData says activation is required to save them. A preview is a screening tool, not proof that every file will recover intact. Stop using the affected drive, and save any recovered files to separate storage.
What Recover My Files does
GetData describes Recover My Files as a Windows utility for finding files lost through deletion, formatting, file-system problems, or events such as a Windows reset or reinstall. Its online introduction describes two approaches: Recover Files for individual deleted or lost files, and Recover Drive for broader drive or file-system problems. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular file can be reconstructed.

GetData also describes partition recovery and file carving, and says the software can work with physical, logical, and disk-imaged media. Its listed image formats include DD/RAW, EnCase E01, AFF, VHD, and DMG. These are product specifications; they do not establish a recovery success rate.
The official download page displays version 6.4.2.2597 and says the program runs on Windows PCs. That build number is a snapshot and may change. GetData’s product page lists Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11 compatibility. See the Recover My Files product page and official download page for current details.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Can it recover deleted, formatted, or missing-drive data?
GetData lists deleted files, Windows file-system corruption, formatted, RAW, corrupt or unallocated drives, missing drive letters, and data loss after a Windows reset or reinstall among the scenarios the program is intended to address. A scan may find file entries or content, but the product’s stated use cases do not mean that every file will be recoverable or complete.
Whether recovery is possible depends on what has happened to the data and the storage since the loss. Continued use can write new data over the space that held deleted files. If the drive is failing physically, software scanning is not an appropriate substitute for hardware recovery.

Will it work with a USB drive, camera card, or other device?
GetData’s online manual lists internal and external hard drives, USB storage, camera cards, hardware or software RAID, iPods, MP3 players, and dictaphones, provided Windows exposes the storage as a hard drive. It explicitly excludes iPhone and iPad drive recovery, citing Apple’s access restrictions. See the online introduction and manual for its device and scenario list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe manual lists FAT12/16/32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS, and HFS+. However, listed file-system support should not be read as a promise that every license tier includes every related recovery feature. The manual assigns RAID recovery, Macintosh HFS recovery, Linux EXT2 recovery, hexadecimal view, and custom layout to Professional; Technician includes Professional features and a USB activation dongle. Product and manual information spans different documentation versions, so check the current license comparison for the exact device, file system, and feature you need before buying.

Can you preview files before buying?
Yes. GetData says the evaluation download can search and display results, including file previews, while an activation key is needed to save recovered files. GetData also advises opening saved files in the applications that created them to check them. Previewing can help you decide whether the scan has found the right material, but this review did not independently verify that a preview predicts a complete, usable recovery. Details are on the download page and product page.
Which license and price should you check?

| Tier | Displayed price | Vendor-stated terms |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | US$69.95 | Key valid for two computers, according to the purchase page. |
| Professional | US$99.95 | Key valid for two computers; the v6 manual assigns several advanced features, including RAID and Macintosh HFS recovery, to this tier. |
| Technician | US$349.90 | Includes Professional features and a portable USB hardware activation dongle, according to GetData. |
These are seller-displayed prices and terms, not a market comparison, and may change. Confirm the live purchase page and current feature comparison before paying. GetData says its software supports more than 200 file types; that is the vendor’s published count, not an independently measured result.

How to reduce the chance of making data loss worse
GetData warns that writing to a problem drive can overwrite missing data. Its guidance is to install the utility on a different drive where possible and save recovered files to a destination other than the one being scanned. A separate external drive is a practical destination; it does not increase the software’s recovery capability.

- Stop using the affected media. Avoid saving, installing, or downloading anything to it.
- Connect it as a secondary drive if practical. GetData recommends installing the program elsewhere when possible.
- Choose the search that matches the loss. Use Recover Files for individual deleted or lost files, or Recover Drive for broader drive or file-system loss, as described by GetData.
- Review the scan results. Use the evaluation preview to check whether the desired files appear.
- Save to separate storage. Do not write recovered files back to the drive being recovered.
- Check saved files in their usual applications. GetData recommends verifying recovered files after saving.
These steps summarize the vendor’s workflow; they are not a claim of tested recovery performance. GetData’s instructions are on its file recovery and saving page.
When should you stop and seek hardware recovery?
If a drive clicks or grinds, or appears physically damaged, GetData advises powering it down and contacting a hardware data-recovery service. Repeated scans of a mechanically unstable drive may worsen the situation. Recover My Files is described as recovery software, not a drive-repair tool. See GetData’s FAQ.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
The practical case for considering Recover My Files is the combination of vendor-listed Windows recovery scenarios and a search-and-preview evaluation workflow. Fit depends on the affected device and file system, the selected recovery mode, the license tier’s current features, whether the preview shows the files you need, and whether you have separate storage for results.
No controlled comparison, independent recovery-rate statistic, or current ranking is established here. GetData’s feature descriptions and customer testimonials should not be mistaken for independent performance evidence. If you compare tools, use the same device and loss scenario, file types, and criteria for recovery completeness, names and folder structure, price, and operating system.
