Record Google Meet and Zoom Calls in the Browser: How to Capture Both Audio Sources

A browser can record microphone audio alongside display-capture audio only when both tracks are available. Learn the workflow, checks, limits, and official Meet and Zoom alternatives.

You can try to record your microphone and meeting audio together in a browser by combining microphone audio with audio returned by screen capture, then passing the combined stream to the HTML5 MediaRecorder API. The important limitation: browser screen capture may provide no audio track at all. MediaRecorder records only the tracks it receives; it does not directly access a Google Meet or Zoom call or guarantee a complete two-sided recording.

What “dual audio” means in a browser recording

For this approach, “dual audio” means local microphone audio plus audio captured from the selected display surface. It does not mean that Meet or Zoom exposes separate participant tracks, nor does it guarantee access to the platform’s internal meeting audio. The browser asks the user to select what to share, and the returned display stream may contain video, audio, or both.

Capture and recording are separate operations: first acquire the streams and assemble the tracks you want; then create and start a recorder with that combined stream. MDN describes the MediaRecorder() constructor as creating a recorder from a MediaStream: MediaRecorder() constructor — MDN.

Check whether browser capture can provide meeting audio

Calling getDisplayMedia() requires a user gesture and a fresh user-mediated selection. Requesting audio: true is not a promise that audio will be returned: availability depends on the browser, operating system, and selected capture surface. MDN puts it plainly: “Capturing audio is always optional, and even when web content requests a stream with both audio and video, the returned MediaStream may still have only one video.” See the Screen Capture API guide — MDN and getDisplayMedia() — MDN.

DigitPro USB 2.0 Audio Capture Card for Vinyl Records, Audio Grabber for Cassette Tapes to Digital MP3 Converter with Stereo RCA/3.5mm Music Interface, Support Mac & Windows 7/8/10/11/XP/Vista
  • Plug and Play: No extra power supply needed. Easily transfer analog audio (cassette tapes, LPs, radio) to USB for PC or Mac and convert to MP3/CD
  • Versatile Input: Features 3.5mm and R/L audio connector Input. Connect via USB to record audio directly to your computer and convert to MP3/WAV
  • Wide Compatibility: Supports Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP and Mac OS 10.7-10.14 (Note: Not compatible with Mac OS 10.15)
  • Professional audio capture and editing software (Audacity) is included or available for download from the official website
  • Note: This audio capture card is designed for common use. For professional-grade needs, please consider a specialized device

Therefore, inspect the returned tracks before starting. If the display stream has no audio track, this method cannot provide both sources in that session. Do not assume a different browser or surface will behave the same way.

Attempt a combined microphone-and-display recording

The following example is an implementation pattern, not a tested or universal Meet/Zoom recipe. Run it from a user-activated button handler. It checks for the two audio sources before recording, chooses a supported recording type when possible, and downloads the resulting Blob when the user stops.

  1. Start from a user gesture. Call startRecording() from a click or equivalent action. The browser’s display chooser remains in the user’s control; the page cannot silently reuse display-capture permission.
  2. Grant microphone access and select the display capture. The example requests the microphone separately and asks for display video and audio. The request is only an attempt to obtain audio; the chooser, browser, system, and surface determine what is actually returned.
  3. Verify both audio tracks. The code checks getAudioTracks() on each stream and stops rather than silently creating a one-sided recording if either source is missing.
  4. Record the assembled stream. The example passes both audio tracks to MediaRecorder. The API’s recording controls and data events are documented in the MediaStream Recording API — MDN. The code checks candidate MIME types with MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported(); actual output and playback still depend on the browser and player.
  5. Stop and release capture resources. Call the returned stop() function when finished. The example gathers emitted data, creates a downloadable Blob, and stops the microphone and display tracks.

Even when both tracks exist and the recorder starts, verify the saved file. Check that local speech and remote meeting audio are audible and synchronized in your target browser, operating system, Meet/Zoom client, audio output route, and chosen capture surface. A successful run in one setup does not establish compatibility in another.

Method Access and permission What it provides Main limitation
Browser capture with MediaRecorder User gesture, display selection, and microphone permission as needed Records the tracks actually supplied to the recorder Display audio is optional and varies by browser and capture surface; it is not guaranteed to capture meeting audio.
Google Meet built-in recording Eligible account and enabled administrator setting; host, role, and permission rules apply Meet recording saved to the organizer’s Drive; participants are notified Not available to every account or participant. Google’s current eligibility details are on its Record a video meeting — Google Meet Help page.
Zoom computer recording Zoom desktop app; the host records or grants recording ability Local computer recording; Zoom documents options that include separate audio files Requires the desktop app, and available features and layouts have limits. See Local recording — Zoom Support.

Choose the method that fits your recording needs

  • Use the browser method when you specifically need a browser-based capture and can confirm that the selected display stream includes audio. Treat the result as a recording of available tracks, not an official platform record.
  • Check Meet’s built-in option if the meeting’s account edition, administrator configuration, and your role permit it. Google says recordings are stored in the organizer’s Drive, in the Meet folder; recordings include the active speaker and anything presented. Its help page also says recording stops automatically after eight hours.
  • Check Zoom computer recording if the desktop application is available and the host records or grants you permission. Zoom describes local recording for free and paid subscribers using its Windows, macOS, or Linux desktop application. Zoom’s consent prompts and behavior can depend on account settings and application version; consult its local recording guidance.

Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete recording

  • No display audio track: The browser did not return display audio for that capture. The audio: true request cannot force it. Try a supported capture surface or use the platform’s official recorder if available.
  • Microphone is missing: Check that microphone permission was granted and that the device is available, then inspect mic.getAudioTracks() before recording.
  • The file plays but one side is silent: Confirm that both tracks existed before recording, then test the saved file with the same setup. A track’s presence alone does not establish that it contains the sound you expected.
  • The recorder rejects a format: Use MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported() rather than assuming a particular MIME type is supported. If no preferred type is supported, allow the browser to choose its default by constructing MediaRecorder without a mimeType.
  • Capture stops unexpectedly: Check whether the user ended display sharing or the capture surface became unavailable. Stop the recorder deliberately and release all stream tracks when done.
